Olympus Has Fallen For Angela Bassett

June 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just yesterday, Aaron Eckhart signed up to play the President in Olympus Has Fallen, and now the film has another star as Variety reports that Angela Bassett will also appear in the movie, which Antoine Fuqua is directing.

The film centres on Gerard Butler’s former Secret Service agent who tries to save the White House after terrorists attack the presidential residence. The plot has been described as Die Hard in the White House. Bassett is due to play the head of the Secret Service, in charge of protecting the President.

The movie is quite similar to Roland Emmerich’s White House Down, which is also racing into production with Jamie Foxx as the President and Channing Tatum as the Secret Service Agent who must take the White House back. Both movies will shoot later this year for release in 2013.

James Patterson’s detective Alex Cross has already hit cinemas in the form of Morgan Freeman in Kiss The Girls and Along Came A Spider, but now he’s returning with Tyler Perry taking on the role in Alex Cross. After Washington DC detective Alex Cross is told that a family member has been murdered, he vows to track down the killer. He soon discovers that she was not his first victim and that things are not what they seem. As the trailer shows, it sets off a bit of a showdown with Matthew Fox’s scary bad guy.

Paddington Teaser Poster Debuts

June 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of months ago it was announced that Harry Potter producer, David Heyman, had signed up to take Paddington Bear into the live action arena for the first time, and now a preview poster for the project has debuted.

Directed by Paul King (twice BAFTA nominated for Come Fly With Me and The Mighty Boosh), will tell the story of a curious young bear from deepest, darkeest Peru who finds his way to Paddington Station and is taken home by an English family.

It’s a sweet poster and suggests this idea could actually work quite well. (Source: Bleeding Cool)

Will Poulter Joins Sudeikis & Aniston In We’re The Millers

June 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

He may only be 19 years old, but thanks to the likes of Son Of Rambow, Voyage Of The Dawn Treader and Wild Bill Will Poulter has already had quite a career. Now Deadline reports he’s heading to the States for We’re The Millers, from Dodgeball helmer Rawson Marshall Thurber.

In the film Jason Sudeikis will play a pot dealer who hires a fake wife (Jennifer Aniston) and two kids so that he can smuggle 1000 pounds of weed cross country in his RV. Just to add a tad more interest, Aniston’s fake wife is actually a hooker, while the two kids are juvenile delinquents.

There no info on exactly who Poulter will be, although there’s a decent chance he’ll be one of the fake sons.

Viggo Mortensen May Take Last Voyage Of The Demeter

June 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Last Voyage Of The Demeter has been in development for several years, but got new impetus recently, when Neil Marshall signed on to direct. Now it seems it’s time for casting, with Bloody Disgusting reporting that an offer has gone out to Viggo Mortensen to star.

Bragi F. Schut wrote the original screenplay (since rewritten by Lowell Cauffiel), which expands on a small portion of Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel. The Demeter was the ship that transported the vampire from Transylvania to London, except the ship washes up on shore with only one survivor left. This story tells the tale of that voyage, where one undead passenger murdered the ship’s crew, one by one.

When David Slade was attached to the project, Noomi Rapace and Ben Kingsley were set to star. It isn’t known if the actors are still involved. There’s no news on when it might shoot (or giving it’s history, when the next director will come onboard).

Mark Strong On For Dexter Fletcher’s Provenance

June 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dexter Fletcher got major kudos earlier this year for his directorial debut, Wild Bill, and now he’s plotting his follow-up, a western called Provenance, with BBC Films throwing its financial backing behind the production.

Now The Guardian reports that Mark Strong has come on board, as has Sammy Williams, the kid in Wild Bill who also featured in Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block. Apparently other of Fletcher’s old cohorts, such as Jason Flemyng, may also sign up, but nobody else it confirmed as of yet.

The movie will be about Londoners seeking their fortune in the frontier towns of the American west.

“I’ve always loved westerns but have never been able to be in one,” Dexter commented. “I tried to work a lot western ideas into Wild Bill and I feel really lucky to be able to actually get to make one of my own, in real western country.”

Genndy Tartakovsky Directing 3D Animated Popeye

June 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Genndy Tartakovsky, who makes his feature directorial debut with Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania later this year, is attached to direct a 3D animated take on the classic character Popeye for the studio, according to Variety.

Last November, Jay Scherick and David Ronn (The Smurfs, Zookeeper) signed up to write the screenplay. There are absolutely no story details available, although it’s safe to presume there’ll be some spinach involved, although it will be released in 3D.

Popeye was created in 1929 by Elzie Crisler Segar, and first appeared in the Thimble Theater comic strip. The character has been showcased in a number of animated shorts, the 1960 TV series Popeye, and director Robert Altman’s 1980 live-action Popeye that starred Robin Williams.

Barbra Streisand Considering A Return To Directing

June 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While she had small roles in Meet The Focker and Little Fockers and will be seen in the upcoming The Guilt Trip, Barbra Streisand hasn’t directed a movie since 1996’s The Mirror Has Two Faces (indeed she’s only helmed three films since her 1983 helming debut, Yentl). Now Showbiz411 suggests she’s thinking of heading back behind the camera for a new romance.

The film is an epic love story about writer Erskine Caldwell and photojournalist Margaret Bourke White, with a script by Linda Yellen. Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett are apparently attached to star in the main roles. Bourke White was one of the first female photojournalist, while Caldwell wrote Southern-set novels like Tobacco Road.

Streisand is also continuing to develop a remake of the musical Gypsy, with her starring as Mama Rose, although it isn’t known how close to production that might be.

Mia Wasikowska Eyed For Catching Fire

June 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While some of the rumours surrounding The Hunger Games: Catching Fire casting have proved to be more reliable than others, the latest reports via The Playlist say actresses Mia Wasikowska and newcomer Zoe Aggeliki are the top candidates to portray former Hunger Games champion Johanna Mason.

The character hails from District 7, and it is said she has no friends or family back home. She becomes an ally to Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) during the 75th Hunger Games, although she has a rather pricky relationship with Katniss.

Director Francis Lawrence is said to be keen on finding the right actress for the role, whether she’s an established talent like Mia Wasikowska, or a fresh face like Zoe Aggeliki. There is speculation that Zoe Aggeliki may sign on in the next few days, but that is not set in stone yet. The actress will make her feature debut next summer in R.I.P.D., where she plays the avatar of Ryan Reynolds’ character, Nick. She also landed a role in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, as Silena Beauregard.

Shooting on Catching Fire starts later this summer, so the role will have to be cast soon.

20-year-old Dylan O’Brien has gained quite a few fans thanks to playing Stiles in MTV’s Teen Wolf. He might get a few more now, as Variety reports that he has joined the cast of The Internship for director Shawn Levy.

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson will star as two unemployed salesmen who become interns at a high-tech company in an attempt to reinvent themselves. Dylan O’Brien will play one of the other interns. Max Minghella, Josh Brener, Tiya Sircar and Torbit Raphae are also set to star.

Shawn Levy is directing from a screenplay by Vince Vaughn, with both serving as producers. Production is scheduled to begin this week, with a US release of June 28th, 2013 already set.
