Avengers 2 Definitely In The Works

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In probably the least surprising development in the history of cinema, with The Avengers having made over $700 million in les than two weeks, Disney CEO Robert Iger has confirmed a sequel is in the works and that they hope to use the movie as a springboard for other Marvel franchises.

Iger told CNBC, “Marvel’s The Avengers isn’t just a film. It’s a franchise, from our perspective. It was helped by the success of the Iron Man movies and Captain America: The First Avenger. From the Avengers we get a chance to make Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 and hopefully another Marvel’s The Avengers movie.

“This one film, which was successful, over $700 million, as you said, as of last night, is going to get a number of other films and franchises. We see tremendous interest in products and in games for Marvel’s The Avengers. We have an ability to leverage what was a very fun film done by a great group of film makers into something much bigger for the company and the effect will be prolonged and that’s very, very exciting for us.”

However just because Iger says it, doesn’t mean he’s not going to have difficulty getting the full team back together. While the likes of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth have lengthy contracts that guarantee their participation in individual sequels and The Avengers 2, Robert Downey’s Jr. contract only runs through Iron Man 3. A new deal would have to be worked out for him, and if they want Joss Whedon back, he’ll also need a new contract. As Marvel is well known for refusing to pay as much as many others in the industry are prepared to, it may prove tough getting both of them back.

Jeff Wadlow Set To Direct Kick-Ass 2

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Kick-Ass failed to break the bank, it looked like any plans for a follow-up were sytmied, even though one has been in development. However its continued popularity on DVD and Blu-ray means that Universal is now looking to move forward with a sequel. Unfortunately though, Matthew Vaughn won’t direct, with Deadline reporting that Jeff Wadlow (Cry Wolf) will take the reins instead and also write the script.

Vaughn isn’t completely out of the picture, as he’ll produce and has been overseeing Wadlow’s screenplay, even if X-Men: First Class 2 mean he can’t direct himself. If everything works out, the movie will shoot in August. There’s a lot to sort out before then though, as all the cast need to be called back, with new deals needing to be sorted for Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

It’s not all locked in place yet, but as many people had written this one off, it’s looking far more likely than it has for a long time.

Rebecca Hall Replacing Jessica Chastain In Iron Man 3

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last month Jessica Chastain was in talks to join the cast of Iron Man 3, playing a scientist. However yesterday she took to Facebook to say that due to a ridiculously busy schedule she won’t be able to slot the Marvel movie in.

However the comic company and director Shane Black aren’t wasting any time (they can’t as the film starts shooting soon), as they’ve already offered the part to The Town’s Rebecca Hall, according to THR. No new details have been revealed about the role, although when Chastain was up for the part it was said she’d be a ‘a sexy scientist every bit as smart as Tony Stark’. Presumably she’ll be someone involved with the nanotechnology that’s said to be a central part of the plot.

Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Andy Lau, Guy Pearce and Don Cheadle also star, with filming set to begin later this month.

Nicole Kidman To Star In The Family Fang

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nicole Kidman has signed on to star in and produce an adaptation of Kevin Wilson’s best-selling book The Family Fang, which will reteam her with Rabbit Hole scribe David Lindsay-Abaire, who’s writing the screenplay.

The book is about two performance artist parents who always force their children to participate in their bizarre art piece. When their grown children return with crises of their own, the parents suck them into pulling off one final and daring act, even though the kids blame these performances for how badly their lives turned out.

Kidman was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Rabbit Hole, which David Lindsay-Abaire adapted from his own Pulitzer Prize-winning play. it isn’t known when this new movie might shoot, although it could potentially be fun. (Source: Deadline)

David Slade Set To Direct Psychological Thriller Villain

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While David Slade had a huge hit with Twilight: Eclipse, since then he’s stuck to TV, such as the pilot of Awake and the upcoming Hannibal Lecter series. However he’s now set to direct the upcoming psychological thriller, Villain, written by Joshua Zetumer (RoboCop).

Villain follows two brothers as they confront their dark past in an unforgiving wilderness. There’s no info on exactly how they brothers get into the Alaskan wastes or any other details of the plot. Filmmakers are currently casting for the two lead roles.

It’s not Slade’s first Alaskan set tale, as he made the great little vampire movie, 30 Days Of Night, set up in the Arctic circle when bloodsuckers descend on a town when it’s plunged into darkness for a month.

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Vince Vaughn’s film career has been very variable, but it’s still good to hear when he got a new project in the works. He’s now in talks to headline DreamWorks’ remake of the 2011 hit French-Canadian comedy Starbuck, according to Variety.

The original is about a middle-aged man who has fathered 533 children through sperm donations. Given the nickname Starbuck, he struggles to decide if he wants to meet a couple hundred of his children, who have come forward in seeking him out.

It’s definitely a premise that could make an interesting movie. Original co-writer and director Ken Scott will remake his own film for American audiences. It isn’t known when the film will shoot.

The Dictator Red Band Trailer – Sacha Baron Cohen’s film gets a bit ruder

May 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sacha Baron Cohen returns to cinemas on May 16th with The Dictator, and now a new red band trailer has arrived, which shows us some of the film’s ruder moments. The film is ‘The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed’ and who ends up having to live the life on an ordinary American when he goes to New York to deliver a speech to the UN. Bizarrely, it’s partly based on a book by Saddam Hussein!

The Campaign – Will Ferrell & Zack Galifianakis Political Ads

May 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With the US heading for the polls this November to decide whether to give Obama another four years or if Mitt Romney can swoop into the Whit House. However Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis are hoping we’re gonna be interested in a slightly different political campaign. In The Campaign, when long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naive Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center. At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family’s political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about. Now we get to see their political ads and see what they stand for, ahead on the film’s release in September.
