Gemma Arterton Circling The Wright Girls

April 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While quite a few Japanese horror movies have gotten an English-language makeover, it’s rarer for a comedy from the Land Of The Rising Sun to get the same treatment, but Gemma Arterton is now in talks to star in The Wright Girls, which is inspired by the Japanese comedy 2LDK, according to THR.

The film is about two young actresses who live together, pretend to be best friends and are co-stars on a successful television show. In reality, they detest each other and go to extreme and violent lengths to do one another in, after they end up competing for the same movie role. The search is still on for the second female lead.

Andy Fickman (She’s The Man, Race To Witch Mountain) is in talks to direct with Bert V. Royal writing the script.

Jennifer Aniston & Jason Sudeikis Reuniting For We’re the Millers

April 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jennifer Aniston & Jason Sudeikis seem to like being in the same movies, even if they didn’t get a a lot of screen time together in either Horrible Bosses or The Bounty Hunter. Now they’re setting out to change that, as they’re both in talks for the lead roles in We’re the Millers, which will give them plenty of time to spar off one another.

You’d have thought Aniston would steer clear of this one, just because the plot sounds oddly like a more grown up take on last year’s Just Go With It. In We’re The Millers, Jason Sudeikis will play a pot dealer who hires a fake wife (Aniston) and two kids so that he can smuggle 1000 pounds of weed cross country in his RV. Just to add a tad more interest, Aniston’s fake wife is actually a hooker, while the two kids will be juvenile delinquents.

Rawson Marshall Thurber, best known for Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, will direct, with the shoot taking place later this year for a summer 2013 release. (Source: Deadline)

Paula Patton Joins Washington & Wahlberg in 2 Guns

April 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol star Paula Patton is one of those actresses who constantly seems to flit around the edge of major recognition, but never quite gets it. Now she’s adding another decent role to her belt, as Deadline reports she’s in talks to take the female lead in 2 Guns, opposite Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington.

The film will be directed by Baltasar Kormákur, who last worked with Mark Wahlberg on the action thriller Contraband, and is based on the Steven Grant graphic novel of the same name. Paula Patton will play the love interest of Denzel Washington’s character in this story of a DEA Agent and a Naval Officer ordered to investigate one other. It’s not the first time Patton and Washington have worked together, as they both starred in Deja Vu.

Shooting will begin later in the year on 2 Guns, after Mark Wahlberg completes filming Michael Bay’s comedic thriller Pain and Gain, as well as promoting the comedy Ted, which he stars in and is release this summer.

Steve Carrell In Talks For Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

April 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Steve Carell wants to add another film to his already bust roster, as Deadline reports that he’s is in talks for the upcoming live action adaptation of Judith Viorst’s popular children’s novel, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

20th Century Fox is behind the family film, which will be the first live action take on the story after a couple of animated versions. Lisa Cholodenko, best known for The Kids Are All Right, will write and direct.

Steve Carell will play the role of Ben in this story about a young boy who endures a frustrating day that begins with him waking up to find gum in his hair and ends with him threatening to move to Australia. He just can’t seem to get anything right, with his teacher moaning about his picture of an invisible castle (actually just a blank sheet of paper) and getting into trouble for punching his brother, who calls him a crybaby after he gets pushed in the mud.

It’s not certain exactly who Ben is, as the story is naturally having to be expanded missaviely from the picture heavy children’s tale. It’s not certain when the movie will shoot, but hopefully they’ve already staked out a spot in Carell’s hectic schedule.

Ben Kingsley In Talks For Villainous Iron Man 3 Role

April 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Poor old Ben Kingsley. Once upon a time he was Gandhi, but in more recent years his main stock in trade has been in shady characters. It appears he’ll soon have one more bad guy to add to his CV, as Variety reports that Ben Kingsley is in final negotiations to take on a villainous roles in Iron Man 3 for director Shane Black.

It isn’t known which character Ben Kingsley will play, but sources are adamant that the Oscar-winning actor will not be playing fan favourite villain Mandarin (which had been the initial assumption). Whoever the character is, they’re somehow involved in nanobot technology and they’ll be working against Tony Stark in the new movie.

Robert Downey Jr. will once again portray Iron Man, and Scarlett Johansson is expected to return as The Black Widow. The plot is rumored to revolve around the use of nanobots to replicate the super serum used to turn Steve Rogers into Captain America, something that’s likely to interest Stark, as his father was intimately involved with that project. Shooting is expected to kick off next month.

Yolanthe Cabau Joins Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain

April 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Is Michael Bay’s tendency to cast inexperienced female actresses allowing young people a chance, or pure sexism assuming that a pretty face is more important than genuine talent?

I get the feeling the latter is closer to the truth, although in the case of the upcoming Pain & Gain, we’ll have to wait and see of Yolanthe Cabau is as good an actress as she is a clothes horse (her only real acting experience is in a Dutch soap opera).

The dark comedy is based on a true story about a pair of bodybuilders in Florida, who get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong. Cabau actress will play the role of Barbara, the girlfriend of Mark Wahlberg’s character. Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson are playing the body builders.

Pain & Gain recently started shooting and will be in cinemas next year.

Hunger Games Stays Atop The US Box Office

April 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Hunger Games has cemented its position as a true movie powerhouse, managing the increasingly rare feat of staying top of the US box office for three weeks, passing through the $300 million mark as it did so. That puts it ahead of all the Twilight movies’ final tallies, suggesting Lionsgate has something truly exceptional on its hands.

However the real battle of the weekend was between Titanic and American Reunion, with many questioning which would end up in the second spot at the US bo office. In the end it was American Reunion with $21.5 million that won out, which was a long way off the last two theatrical Pie movies, but that’s perhaps not unexpected for a franchise that’s been out of cinemas for a decade.

Titanic came third with $17.3 million over the weekend and $25 million since it opened last Wednesday. It’s not an amazing box office take, but with the Titanic anniversary still to come and overseas reporting healthy business, it’s still likely to be viewed as a success by the end of its run.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of April 6th-8th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hunger Games $33.5 $302.8
2 American Reunion $21.5 $21.5
3 Titanic 3D $17.3 $25.7
4 Wrath Of The Titans $15.0 $58.8
5 Mirror Mirror $11.0 $36.4
6 21 Jump Street $10.2 $109.5
7 Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax $5.0 $198.2
8 Salmon Fishing In The Yemen $0.97 $4.6
9 John Carter $0.82 $67.9
10 Safe House $0.58 $124.7

Paranormal Activity Team Set Up Latino-Themed Horror

April 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paranormal Activity producers/creators Oren Peli and Jason Blum are reuniting with writer Christopher B. Landon (Paranormal Activity 2, Paranormal Activity 3) for a new Latino-themed horror project, THR reports. Paramount will back the movie through the micro-budget mini-studio it set up in the wake of the success of Paranormal Activity..

Christopher B. Landon will write and direct the untitled project, which is described as a ‘cousin’ to the Paranormal Activity franchise. The movie will feature a Latino cast and will delve into Catholic-based paranormal mythology, although it will be presented in English, not Spanish. It is said that Latinos see more movies than any other demographic, and that Catholic-themed movies play particularly well in that market.

Paramount is aiming at a January 2013 release for this $1 miilion bugeted movie, which could start production within the next few months.

A Fantastic Fear of Everything Trailer

April 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems Simon Pegg and director Crispian Mills (who some may remember as the lead singer of Kula Shaker) are trying to channel a bit of Wes Anderson style qurkiness with A Fantastic Fear Of Everything, or at least it would appear so from this trailer. Jack (Pegg) is a children’s author turned crime novelist whose detailed research into the lives of Victorian serial killers has turned him into a paranoid wreck, persecuted by the irrational fear of being murdered. When Jack is thrown a lifeline by his long-suffering agent and a mysterious Hollywood executive takes a sudden and inexplicable interest in his script, what should be his big break rapidly turns into his big breakdown, as Jack is forced to confront his worst demons; among them his love life, his laundry and the origin of all fear. The film’s due out June 8th.

Niels Arden Oplev, director of the original Scandinavian adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, is busy putting together his English-language debut, Dead Man Down. Now Variety reports that Terrence Howard has joined the cast.

Noomi Rapace will play the lead character, who enlists the help of a shady criminal (Colin Farrell) to get revenge on the mob boss who murdered her family. Terrence Howard will play the crime lord, Alphonse Hoyt, who is used to being feared before this revenge-seeking duo wreaks havoc on his crime enterprise. A few days ago Dominic Cooper signed up to play Colin Farrell’s partner on the street.
