Steve Carell In Talks For Minecraft Movie

November 16, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

steve-carellNow that every piece of intellectual property that anyone has ever heard of is fair game for a movie adaptation, it’s the turn of Minecraft to be lining up for a big screen adaptation. The movie may have now found its star, as Variety reports that Steve Carell is in talks for the film.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney is set to direct the movie, and also penned the latest script, along with Wonder Woman’s Jason Fuchs. It’s not known exactly what the film will be about, as the fact Minecraft is more about building that narrative leaves things wide open.

A previous iteration, which was set to be helmed by Shawn Levy, was said to be a family adventure movie in the vein of The Goonies. However, McElhenney may have completely changed things since then. Warner Bros. must be happy with where it’s heading though, as they’ve already set a release date of May 25th, 2019.

The Green Hornet Getting Rebooted Again With Director Gavin O’Connor

November 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gavin-o-connorIn 2011 there was a lot of excitement about The Green Hornet getting a movie makeover, and initially Seth Rogen and Jay Chou might be pretty good as Britt Reid as Kato. However, Michel Gondry’s movie turned out to be pretty ropey, and got bad notices from both critics and audience. It did however make over $220 million at cinemas around the Globe.

Paramount seems to think the world has already forgotten about that movie enough, as they’re already working on a new, rebooted version, which has Gavin O’Connor to direct, according to Deadline. O’Connor most recently helmed The Accountant, and was also behind the camera for the likes of Jane Got A Gun, Warrior and Pride & Glory.

The Green Hornet follows a rich young man who becomes a kung-fu fuelled crimefighter, along with his sidekick/chauffeur Kato. However, while earlier incarnation have all had a campy side, it seems O’Connor is planning something a little grittier.

He says, ‘I’ve been wanting to make this movie — and create this franchise — since I’ve wanted to make movies. As a kid, when most of my friends were into Superman and Batman, there was only one superhero who held my interest — The Green Hornet. I always thought he was the baddest badass because he had no superpowers. The Green Hornet was a human superhero. And he didn’t wear a clown costume. And he was a criminal — in the eyes of the law — and in the eyes of the criminal world…

‘I’m beyond excited to bring The Green Hornet into the 21st century in a meaningful and relevant way; modernizing it and making it accessible to a whole new generation. My intention is to bring a gravitas to The Green Hornet that wipes away the camp and kitsch of the previous iteration. I want to re-mythologize The Green Hornet in a contemporary context, with an emphasis on story and character, while at the same time, incorporating themes that speak to my heart…

‘When we meet Britt Reid he’s lost faith in the system. Lost faith in service. In institutions. If that’s the way the world works, that’s what the world’s going to get. He’s a man at war with himself. A secret war of self that’s connected to the absence of his father. It’s the dragon that’s lived with him that he needs to slay. And the journey he goes on to become The Green Hornet is the dramatization of it, and becomes Britt’s true self. I think of this film as Batman upside down meets Bourne inside out by way of Chris Kyle [American Sniper]. He’s the anti-Bruce Wayne. His struggle: Is he a savior or a destroyer? Britt made money doing bad things, but moving forward he’s making no money doing good things. He must realize his destiny as a protector and force of justice by becoming the last thing he thought he’d ever become: his father’s son. Which makes him a modern Hamlet. By uncovering his past, and the truth of his father, Britt unlocks the future…

‘Britt’s shadow war background makes him a natural at undercover work. This is connected to his military backstory, which is more CIA Special Activities Division than SEAL Team 6. He’s cross-trained in intelligence work and kinetic operations. A hunter at the top of the Special Operations food chain, working so far outside the system he had to think twice to remember his real name. We will put a vigilante engine under the hood of his character’.

Sean O’Keefe will write the script, although at the moment it’s not known when we might see the movie.

Matt Damon Returning To The Heist Franchise For Ocean’s Eight

November 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-damon-oceans-thirteenThey’ve pulled together a great cast for Ocean’s Eight, which will reboot the Ocean’s Eleven franchise with a largely female cast. However, ET reveals that at least one member of the earlier cast will be showing up, with Matt Damon confirming he’s set to shoot a cameo.

He says,  “I’m doing a little bit in the movie. I haven’t read it yet, but the cast is phenomenal and I’m excited to see what those women do with it. It’s going to be fun.”

Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Awkwafina will be the titular eight, who stage a complex heist centred on the annual New York Met Gala Ball. It’s also been reported that Bullock’s character is a relative of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean, but it’s not known if Clooney himself will be involved at all.

Hunger Games helmer Gary Ross should start shooting the movie either later this year or early next year in New York. Steven Soderbergh, who directed the Ocean’s 11 trilogy, will produce.

Beauty & The Beast Trailer – A brand new take on a tale as old as time

November 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

beauty-and-the-beast-pic1-slideThere are already a lot of people excited about Disney’s live-action Beauty & The Beast, and this first trailer is likely to up the anticipation. There may be a couple of special effect wobbles they can hopefully sort out in the next few months, but overall it looks as magical as you could hope for. And we have to say, the Beast is looking hot (partly due to having the gorgeous Dan Stevens under the CGI fur).

The promo is filled with live-action recreations of classic moments from the 1990s animated movie, back by a rousing school and a comforting reassurance that while things will have changed, much of what people love about the original will remain.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a live-action re-telling of the studio’s animated classic which refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. “Beauty and the Beast” is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within. The film stars: Emma Watson as Belle; Dan Stevens as the Beast; Luke Evans as Gaston, the handsome, but shallow villager who woos Belle; Oscar® winner Kevin Kline as Maurice, Belle’s eccentric, but lovable father; Josh Gad as Lefou, Gaston’s long-suffering aide-de-camp; Golden Globe® nominee Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, the candelabra; Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci as Maestro Cadenza, the harpsichord; Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, the feather duster; six-time Tony Award® winner Audra McDonald as Madame Garderobe, the wardrobe; Oscar nominee Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, the mantel clock; and two-time Academy Award® winner Emma Thompson as the teapot, Mrs. Potts.

‘Directed by Oscar® winner Bill Condon from a screenplay by TBD based on the 1991 animated film, the film is produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman with eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, who won two Academy Awards® (Best Original Score and Best Song) for the 1991 animated film, providing the score, which will include new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and Howard Ashman, as well as several new songs written by Menken and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice.’

The film will in in cinemas next March. [Read more…]

Ghost In The Shell Trailer – Scarlett Johannson takes on the classic Japanese anime

November 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ghost-in-the-shell-poster-slideThere’s been a bit of controversy of the live-action film version of Ghost In The Shell, and whether it’s right for Scarlett Johannson to play a character who was always Japanese in the original anime the movie is based on. Whatever people’s thoughts on whitewashing, the movie is on its way, and the first full trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the internationally-acclaimed Japanese Anime property, GHOST IN THE SHELL follows Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9 devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists. Directed by Rupert Sanders. The film stars Scarlett Johansson, “Beat” Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, and Kaori Momoi.’

Johansson, Kitano, and director Rupert Sanders joined fans and influencers from across the globe in Tokyo on Sunday for the film’s global launch party, with the trailer being released around the world following that. The movie will be in cinemas next Spring. [Read more…]

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Trailer – Luc Besson goes sci-fi again with Dane DeHaan & Cara Delevingne

November 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

valerian-slideLuc Besson took us into a rather unique sci-fi world with The Fifth Element, which got a very mixed reaction on its cinema release, but has since grown more than a cult reputation. Now the director is going back to hard sci-fi with Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which has just released its first proper trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Rooted in the classic graphic novel series, Valerian and Laureline- visionary writer/director Luc Besson advances this iconic source material into a contemporary, unique and epic science fiction saga.

‘Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

‘Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.’

It’s due in cinemas next summer. [Read more…]

New Live By Night Trailer – Ben Affleck directs a Prohibition era crime thriller

November 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

live-by-night-slideBen Affleck has been working on bringing Live By Night to the big screen for around four years. Now it’s preparing for its release, with Affleck hoping it’ll be as well received as his last directorial effort, Argo.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Oscar winner Ben Affleck (“Argo”) directed and stars in the dramatic crime thriller “Live by Night.” Affleck also wrote the screenplay, based on the award-winning best-seller by Dennis Lehane; it marks the second collaboration for the fellow Boston natives, following the acclaimed drama “Gone Baby Gone.”

‘“Live by Night” is set in the roaring `20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

Starring with Affleck are Elle Fanning (“Maleficent”), Brendan Gleeson (“In the Heart of the Sea,” the “Harry Potter” films), Chris Messina (“Argo,” “The Mindy Project”), Sienna Miller (“American Sniper,” “Foxcatcher”), Zoe Saldana (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avatar”), and Oscar winner Chris Cooper (“Adaptation,” “The Town”).’

The film will be in UK cinemas in January. [Read more…]

New Poster For Live-Action Beauty & The Beast Pays Homage To A Classic Dance

November 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

beauty-and-the-beast-poster2There’s a lot of interest in the upcoming live-action Beauty and the Beast. With images and a new poster having arrived in the last few days, it can only be a short time until we get a proper trailer. As with much of the other marketing so far, it harks back to the classic animated movie, while also suggesting this will be just a little bit different.

New Collateral Beauty Trailer – Will Smith is forced to confront his grief by a great cast

November 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

collateral-beautyThis one certainly looks like it might be a bit of Oscar-bait from Will Smith and director David Frankel (Dear Diary, The Devil Wears Prada), working with a very impressive cast. It may also be hoping to jerk some tears with its magical realism over the Christmas period.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When a successful New York advertising executive (Will Smith) experiences a deep personal tragedy and retreats from life entirely, his colleagues devise a drastic plan to force him to confront his grief in a surprising and profoundly human way.

‘“Collateral Beauty” features an all-star cast, including Will Smith (“Suicide Squad,” “Concussion”), Edward Norton (“Birdman or [The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance]”), Keira Knightley (“The Imitation Game”), Michael Peña (“The Martian”), Naomie Harris (“Spectre”), Jacob Latimore (“The Maze Runner”), with Oscar winners Kate Winslet (“The Reader,” “Steve Jobs”) and Helen Mirren (“The Queen,” “Trumbo”).’

The movie is set to his UK cinemas on December 26th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]
