Peter Jackson To Write & Produce Mortal Engines Adaptation

October 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

peter-jacksonSince the release of the final Hobbit movie, things have been fairly quiet on the Peter Jackson front. While another Tintin film is floating around, he’s generally been taking a break from writing, directing and producing movies. Now though it’s been announced he’s set to write and produce an adaptation of Philip Reeve’s science fiction fantasy book, Mortal Engines, according to THR.

He won’t direct though, as that job has gone to his protege,  Christian Rivers. Jackson co-wrote the script with his wife and collaborator, Phillipa Boyens.

Mortal Engines ‘is set in a future world devastated ecologically and technologically and where certain cities such as London are run on engines and mobility, giving them the ability to prey on others for resources. The story centers on a teen named Tom Natsworthy who, along with a young woman from a territory known as the Outlands, uncovers a mystery that could change the world order’. There are four books in total, so if successful this could become a franchise.

Jackson apparently liked the books steampunk trapping and has been working on a movie version since 2009. However, it’s only now it’s moving forward, with the screenplay complete, and Universal and MRC stepping up to fund it. It’ll start shooting in New Zealand next spring.

Jackson comments, “Christian is one of my closest collaborators. The combination of emotion and jaw-dropping visuals in Mortal Engines makes this the perfect movie for his move into feature directing. What Christian intends to do with Philip Reeve’s terrific story is going to result in an original and spectacular movie. I wish I could see it tomorrow!”

Donald Glover Will Be Lando Calrissian In Young Han Solo Movie

October 23, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

donald-gloverThe first of the Star Wars side movies, Rogue One, hits in December, but Disney/Lucafilm is already planning the next, which will be based on the early days of Han Solo. Alden Ehrenreich is set to play the main role, and now it’s been officially announced that Community’s Donald Glover will be the young Lando Calrissian.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has previously described the film as being, “An origin story about Han Solo and Chewie.” However, Han also knew Lando when he was a young pilot, and it looks like the movie will also cover their relationship, although it’s now known exactly how the future Cloud City head will factor into the movie.

The film’s directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, tweeted, ‘We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us. These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.’

The filmmakers are also currently looking for the movie’s female lead and expect to cast someone in the next few weeks. The movie will shoot early next year for release May 2018.

Logan Trailer – The future’s not bright for Wolverine and Professor X

October 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

logan-trailer-slideIt certainly doesn’t look like there’s a bright, shiny future for mutants if this first trailer for Logan is anything to go by. Indeed, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) himself is scarred, increasingly grizzled and dejected, while Patrick Stewart’s Professor X seems to be on his last legs. But perhaps there’s one last shot at redemption.

The girl in the trailer is believed to be a semi-clone of Wolverine, who he must protect. As you’ll see from the trailer, it’s got a rather dark, weary, western tone (helped by the choice of Johnny Cash on the soundtrack), with suggestions this could be R-rated.

Jackman has said this will be his last movie playing the characters, having outlasted any other actor playing a superhero (to put it in context, he first played Wolverine before Sam Raimi’s Spider-man, which is now the Spideys ago), and there is a note of finality in this trailer. What’s perhaps just as interesting is how this will fit into the larger X-Men universe, or whether once more it will will muddy the continuity waters. The film is due out next March. [Read more…]

Warner Bros. & Harry Potter Producer David Heyman Plan New Willy Wonka Movie

October 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

charlie-and-the-chocolate-factory-jonny-deppWarner Bros. had medium success with Tim Burton’s 2005 take on Charlie & The Chocolate, but a lot more success with the London stage version of Roald Dahl’s tale. It feels there’s more life in Willy Wonka, as it’s been announced that Warner has snapped up the screen rights to the character and plans to make a new movie, according to Variety.

It is perhaps surprising, as while the Dahl estate has allowed various filmmakers to make movies based on his popular stories, they have generally kept fairly tight control on the rights so people can’t go too far from the original tales. However, with this new film they seem to feel confident enough with the studio and with Harry Potter producer, David Heyman, who’s also onboard, to allow them go well beyond the Dahl’s written words. Admittedly they’re not completely letting go, as Michael Siegel from the writer’s estate will produce as well.

They will be going into Wonka’s pre-Charlie, with the suggestion being that they won’t use any particular parts of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator to inspire the script. That said, the most logical storyline would be Wonka’s worldwide travels looking for the perfect chocolate, which also saw him meeting the Oompa Loompas, but they may end up going in a different direction.

Simon Rich is writing the script for the movie, which it appears Warner Bros. is hoping can become a franchise.

Colin Firth Joins Disney’s Mary Poppins Sequel

October 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colin-firthWhile Disney doesn’t plan shooting its planned musical Mary Poppins sequel until early next year, but it’s been busy building the cast to ensure it can have the best bunch of actors it can find. The latest to join is Colin Firth, according to Variety.

He will star alongside Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins, Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer as a grown-up Michael and Jane Banks, Hamilton’s Lin Manuel Miranda as lamplighter Jack (the equivalent of the Dick Van Dyke role) and Meryl Streep as Poppins’ cousin Topsy. Firth meanwhile will be William Weatherall Wilkins, president of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank.

The follow-up will be set in the 1930s and follow Michael and Jane Banks, as well as their children, after a major event takes place in their lives. That event results in the return of the magical Mary Poppins, who teams up with Jack to help the family.

Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Smash) will write the songs, with David Magee penning the script, based on PL Travers other Poppins stories. Rob Marshall is set to direct, with a December 2018 release date set.

The Boss Baby Teaser – A young boy gets a very unusual baby brother

October 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-boss-baby-teaser-quadA new baby can often cause jealousy with older siblings, but things go a bit further than that in The Boss Baby, where the new addition to the family wears a suit, carries a briefcase, and can talk. Take a look at the trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘DreamWorks Animation and the director of Madagascar invite you to meet a most unusual baby.  He wears a suit, speaks with the voice and wit of Alec Baldwin, and stars in the animated comedy, DreamWorks’ The Boss Baby.  The Boss Baby is a hilariously universal story about how a new baby’s arrival impacts a family, told from the point of view of a delightfully unreliable narrator, a wildly imaginative 7 year old named Tim.  With a sly, heart-filled message about the importance of family, DreamWorks’ The Boss Baby is an authentic and broadly appealing original comedy for all ages.’

The Boss Baby will be in UK cinemas in next April. [Read more…]

Final Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer – Felicity Jones heads for a galaxy far, far away

October 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rogue-one-slideWhile there have been rumours of trouble behind the scenes of Rogue One, with Disney said to be concerned about the tone, and the need for extensive reshoots, in the past few weeks the vibes seem to have been improving for the first of the planned movies that take place outside the main Star Wars story arc. The final trailer has now arrived, which certainly makes it look like this could be a good one.

The film follows the mission that got hold of the Death Star plans that played such a vital role in the first movie, with the trailer not just teasing the planet destroying weapon, but also the fact Darth Vader will feature in the movie. And after the success of Rey, the trailer introduces us to another strong heroine in the form of Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso.

The movie hits cinemas in December. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]
