Live By Night Trailer – Ben Affleck directs a Prohibition era crime thriller

September 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

live-by-night-poster1-slideBen Affleck has been working on bringing Live By Night to the big screen for around four years. Now it’s preparing for its release, with Affleck hoping it’ll be as well received as his last directorial effort, Argo.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Oscar winner Ben Affleck (“Argo”) directed and stars in the dramatic crime thriller “Live by Night.” Affleck also wrote the screenplay, based on the award-winning best-seller by Dennis Lehane; it marks the second collaboration for the fellow Boston natives, following the acclaimed drama “Gone Baby Gone.”

‘“Live by Night” is set in the roaring `20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

Starring with Affleck are Elle Fanning (“Maleficent”), Brendan Gleeson (“In the Heart of the Sea,” the “Harry Potter” films), Chris Messina (“Argo,” “The Mindy Project”), Sienna Miller (“American Sniper,” “Foxcatcher”), Zoe Saldana (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avatar”), and Oscar winner Chris Cooper (“Adaptation,” “The Town”).’

The film will be in UK cinemas in January. [Read more…]

New Ouija: Origin of Evil Trailer – The evils of the spirit board are back

September 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ouija-origin-of-evil-slideWhen a movie based on the Ouija board was announced, some took it as evidence that Hollywood had officially run out of ideas. However, when it was released the low budget (much lower than originally envisioned) grossed over $100 million worldwide, which was enough to get a sequel going. Now the trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘It was never just a game. Inviting audiences again into the lore of the spirit board, Ouija: Origin of Evil tells a terrifying new tale as the follow-up to 2014’s sleeper hit that opened at number one. In 1965 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home. When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.’

It probably won’t be too surprising to hear that the film will be out just before Halloween. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

New Doctor Strange Poster Arrives, Featuring Benedict Cumberbatch

September 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

doctor-strange-payoff-posterWe’ve got one more major superhero to wait for this year, with Marvel introducing a new character in Doctor Strange. The Studio has released a new poster, which you can see above, along with the news that its UK release has been moved up a few days to October 25th.

Cumberbatch plays Stephen Vincent Strange, a former neurosurgeon who becomes the next Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Tilda Swinton will play Strange’s mentor, the Ancient One, while Chiwetel Ejiofor will appear as Baron Mordo, who also studies magic under the Ancient One, before becoming Doctor Strange’s nemesis. Mads Mikelsen is also onboard to play one of the main villains, while Rachel McAdams is Christine Palmer.

It’ll be interesting to see whether Marvel continues its incredibly successful run. The trailer certainly suggested it could be an interesting film, with the makers also saying this is one that needs to be seen in 3D.

Take A Look At Character Posters For Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals

September 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nocturnal-animals-poster2-slideFashion designer Tom Ford got masses of praise for his movie directorial debut, A Single Man, and initial reports suggest he could get a lot more for Nocturnal Animals. Indeed , it’s just won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

A new set of character posters for the movie has now emerged, which you can take a look at below. The film will be in cinemas in November.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From writer/director Tom Ford comes a haunting romantic thriller of shocking intimacy and gripping tension that explores the thin lines between love and cruelty, and revenge and redemption. Academy Award nominees Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal star as a divorced couple discovering dark truths about each other and themselves in “Nocturnal Animals.”

‘Susan Morrow, a Los Angeles art dealer (portrayed by Ms. Adams), lives an incredibly privileged yet unfulfilled life with her husband Hutton Morrow (Armie Hammer). One weekend, as Hutton departs on one of his too-frequent business trips, Susan receives an unsolicited package that has been left in her mailbox. It is a novel, Nocturnal Animals, written by her ex-husband Edward Sheffield (Mr. Gyllenhaal), with whom she has had no contact for years. Edward’s note accompanying the manuscript encourages Susan to read the work and then to contact him during his visit to the city. Alone at night, in bed, Susan begins reading. The novel is dedicated to her…

‘…but its content is violent and devastating. While Susan reads, she is deeply moved by Edward’s writing and cannot help but reminisce over the most private moments from her own love story with the author. Trying to look within herself and beyond the glossy surface of the life and career that she has made, Susan increasingly interprets the book as a tale of revenge, a tale that forces her to re-evaluate the choices that she has made, and re-awakens a love that she feared was lost – as the story builds to a reckoning that will define both the novel’s hero and her own.’ [Read more…]

Johnny Depp To Star In Biggie & Tupac Murder Investigation Movie Labyrinth

September 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

johnny-deppFor the past few months Johnny Depp has been making headlines, but not for his movies, but now that his divorce from Amber Heard is dying down (for now at least), he’s hoping he can put accusations of assault and violent behaviour behind him. Whether they will go away is yet to be seen.

It’s just been announced, via THR, that he’s set to star in a movie about the police detective who investigated the murders of The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur. He will be Russell Poole, ‘a decorated detective who spent months investigating the murder of B.I.G., real name Christopher Wallace, eventually coming to believe that a group of “gangta cops in his own force were not only involved but were also tied to Death Row Records and the Bloods street gang.” The result was confrontations with the LAPD police chief and culminated with Poole going into early retirement in protest.’

Brad Furman is set to direct, based on a script by Christian Contreras. It’s not clear when it will shoot.

Collateral Beauty Trailer – Will Smith must be forced to confront his grief by a great cast

September 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

collateral-beauty-slideThis one certainly looks like it might be a bit of Oscar-bait from Will Smith and director David Frankel (Dear Diary, The Devil Wears Prada), working with a very impressive cast. It may also be hoping to jerk some tears with its magical realism over the Christmas period.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When a successful New York advertising executive (Will Smith) experiences a deep personal tragedy and retreats from life entirely, his colleagues devise a drastic plan to force him to confront his grief in a surprising and profoundly human way.

‘“Collateral Beauty” features an all-star cast, including Will Smith (“Suicide Squad,” “Concussion”), Edward Norton (“Birdman or [The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance]”), Keira Knightley (“The Imitation Game”), Michael Peña (“The Martian”), Naomie Harris (“Spectre”), Jacob Latimore (“The Maze Runner”), with Oscar winners Kate Winslet (“The Reader,” “Steve Jobs”) and Helen Mirren (“The Queen,” “Trumbo”).’

The movie is set to his UK cinemas on December 26th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Rebecca Ferguson Up For Hugh Jackman’s Musical The Greatest Showman

September 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rebecca-fergusonWhen it was announced that Michelle Williams was joining the PT Barnum musical biopic The Greatest Showman, many assumed she would be playing Swedish opera star Jenny Lind. However, that role is actually going to Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation’s Rebecca Ferguson, according the Variety.

As well as Ferguson and Williams, the cast also include Zendaya, Zac Efron and Hugh Jackman, as Barnum. The film will focus life of Barnum, who was known for his elaborate hoaxes before creating the three-ring circus. He also spent a lot of time pining for Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind, and it’s believed this relationship will be the central spine of the movie.

Michael Gracey is attached to direct. The project has been in the works for over five years, but apparently Fox has now made it a priority, partly because they know what a passion project it is for Jackman. It should start filming this autumn.

Jackie Chan & Owen Wilson Reteaming For Shanghai Dawn

September 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shanghai-knights-slideIt’s time for another sequel that no one asked for, but with Hollywood looking for any and every way to entice Chinese audience, it’s been revealed that Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson getting back together for a follow-up to Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights, according to THR.

13 years on from the last movie, they’re in talks return as a former Chinese Imperial Guard (Chan) and a Wild West cowboy in the 19th Century. There’s no news on the exact plot of this one, but hopefully they’ve come up with something good, as the film was first put into development back in 2003, shortly after the release of Shanghai Knights.

Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) is set to direct, from a script by Theodore Riley and Aaron Buchsbaum, based on a story by with Miles Millar and Alfred Gough (writers of the earlier Shanghai movies). It’s not clear when it might shoot.

Certain Women Trailer – Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart & Laura Dern explore gender & sexuality

September 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

certain-womenThis is one of those quiet trailers that may not tell you a lot of plot, but still suggests the movie itself might be truly excellent. If nothing else, it has an incredible cast, including Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart, Laura Dern, newcomer Lily Gladstone, Rene Auberjonois, Jared Harris and James Le Gros. And with Kelly Reichardt directing, it got a huge amount of promise.

Plus there’s an added bit of gay interest with its suggestion of a growing flirtation and bond between Stewart and Gladstone’s characters.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘One of America’s foremost filmmakers, Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy, Meek’s Cutoff) directs a remarkable ensemble cast led by Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart, and Laura Dern in this stirring look at three women striving to forge their own paths amidst the wide-open plains of the American Northwest: a lawyer (Dern) who finds herself contending with both office sexism and a hostage situation; a wife and mother (Williams) whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student (Stewart) who forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand (radiant newcomer Lily Gladstone). As their stories intersect in subtle but powerful ways, a portrait emerges of flawed, but strong-willed individuals in the process of defining themselves.’

The film will be in US cinemas in October. [Read more…]
