It appears NBC is thinking about doing something that’s never really been tried before, a crime show led by two gay characters. The US TV network has put a remake of the TV show Hart To Hart into development, according to Deadline, with the ‘twist’ being the fact that this time it revolves around a gay couple.
The original show ran from 1979 to 1984 (followed by a series of TV movies) and revolved around Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers as self-made millionaire Jonathan Hart and his journalist wife Jennifer, who in each episode of their globe-trotting adventures got involved in murders, robberies and other crimes, using their amateur sleuthing skills to find the bad guys.
Carol Mendelsohn (CSI, Melrose Place) will produce the new version, with Christopher Fife writing the pilot script. The series will focus ‘on “by the book” attorney Jonathan Hart and free-spirited investigator Dan Hartman, who must balance the two sides of their life: action-packed crime-solving in the midst of newly found domesticity’.
Although shows with gay leads have a very mixed history on US network TV, several networks showed interest in the new Hart To Hart, to the point where NBC will have to pay major penalty if they don’t put the pilot into production.
It would be great to see the show make it to air, as it may be one of the first major shows with major gay characters where their sexuality isn’t the focus of the series.
