Johanna Mason (Jena Malone) Shows Off Her Hunger Games: Catching Fire Fashion

August 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

catching-fire-johanna-mason-capitol-coutureThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire has been trying to selling itself on showing off the over-the-top style of the Capitol, the autocratic place that hold control over the districts and forces competitors into the Hunger Games arena to do battle.

Now a new series has been with an image of Jena Malone as Johanna Mason, a former champion who initially seems to take a disliking to Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen but eventually revealed hidden depths. The pic debuted over at CapitolCouture.

Here’s the description that came with the pic: ‘The young District 7 victor takes glamour to new heights.

‘Johanna Mason may hail from the lumber district, but this slip of a victor is anything but green.  Don’t be swayed by her cinnamon sprinkle of freckles and delicate, doll-like features. She was one of the youngest tributes ever reaped in Hunger Games history and her agility with an axe resonates throughout Panem. Sly. Savage. Sangfroid. These are just a few of the adjectives tossed around to describe Mason, who’s known for disarming her victims by feigning weakness.

‘Mason arrives at her photo shoot for Capitol Couture looking anything but meek. She has a reputation for being snide with her prep team.  District 7’s stylist has been dressing tributes like oak trees and firs for the opening ceremonies ever since the first Hunger Games. Clearly, Mason prefers a more conceptual take on lumber and paper.  “My stylist’s the biggest idiot in the Capitol. Wish I’d gotten Cinna,” she has been known to mumble.

‘During make up, Mason doesn’t fidget as her artist adheres three-inch eyelashes to her lower lashline that only intensify her disarming gaze. (It’s telling that she doesn’t flinch once, even when dots of hot glue are applied.) A palette of golden metallic eyeshadow brings out the greenish brown of her up-slanted eyes and extended wings of copper cream shadow add depth.  For her lips, a trace of nude liner is filed with a matte soft sienna lipstick and then overlaid with bronze gloss.  Her lustrous chestnut locks, upswept into a coronet of curls, lend an organic majesty to the look. The effect is futuristic forest queen. It’s almost as if this petite tribute has been gilded by a nymph from her very own district.

‘But it’s her custom gown—a graceful collaboration by Capitol costume designer Trish Summerville and couture designer Jan Taminiau—that transforms her from gladiator to goddess. Constructed of artfully shredded and ruched chiffon and rags, the confection feels like flutters of paper in a gentle breeze.  The use of bark tissue or sculpted cork for the bodice, one sleeve and plumed collar is a nod to the natural resources of District 7.  “I love creating a fantasy around a woman’s body,” says the Dutch designer Taminiau of his creative process. The asymmetry suits Mason and allows us a glimpse of her bold bracelet of bronze nails. The gold ear cuffs by jewelry designer Eddie Borgo supply just the right amount of glint.

Mason poses for a few shots and then slips off her four-inch platform Camilla Skovgaard jagged-wedged sandals. She suddenly looks smaller, even younger—but hardly weak.  Clearly, the odds are ever in her favor and this victor doesn’t need to knock on wood.’

Bobby Cannavale Will Advise Jamie Foxx In The Annie Remake

August 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bobby-CannavaleThe new, updated version of the classic musical Annie is gearing up to shoot, and it’s already got Quvenzhane Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz and Rose Byrne on-board. Now Deadline reports that they’ve been joined by Broadwalk Empire star Bobby Cannavale.

The music for this new version has been updated by Will Smith and Jay-Z score, although it’s not known yet quite how contemporary the tunes will become and whether we’ll get a hip-hop version of Tomorrow. The plot remains the same though, with orphan Annie (Wallis) having a hard-luck life in the foul orphanage run by Miss Hannigan (Diaz). She’s then taken in by the filthy rich Benjamin Stacks (Foxx), who initially doesn’t really want her, but soon falls for the plucky youngster’s charms.

Cannavale will be playing what appears to be a new character, a “bulldog political adviser” to Foxx’s character, who in this revamped version is considering a run for Mayor of New York City, in this contemporary take on the tale.

Will Gluck is directing from a screenplay he is currently rewriting, which was originally written by Aline Brosh McKenna and Emma Thompson. Annie is currently set for release December 25th, 2014

New Pics From Darren Aronofsky’s Noah Suggest A Different Type Of Biblical Epic

August 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

noah-pic4
It would have been a surprise if Darren Aronofsky made a biblical epic and it turned out to be generic Hollywood action. And if these new pics are any indication, this will be a rather different type of movie, taking the story of Noah and giving it a more naturalistic feel than most Biblical movies (if we ignore that the film thinks everyone living in the Middle East thousands of years ago was white).

The film follows Noah (Russell Crowe), who lives on a vast plain of volcanic ash in the lee of a volcanic glacier (the movie’s being shot in Iceland) and has to trek up a mountain every day to get to work. He is told by God to build an enormous vessel to house both his family and the animals of the world to preserve them from a flood that promises to wipe out a sin-filled world. It’s currently due for release on March 28th, 2014.

While the film hasn’t had much mainstream marketing yet, Paramount is already courting faith organisations in the US, hoping they will turn out in droves for the movie. It’s currently due for release on March 28th, 2014.

Rodrigo Santoro

A couple of months ago Will Smith signed on to star in Focus, replacing Ben Affleck who’d been circling the movie. Margot Robbie is already set to co-star and now THR reports that 300 star Rodrigo Santoro has joined them.

The film is about a veteran con man (Smith) who takes a young woman (Robbie) under his wing and teaches her the illicit trade before falling for her. Years later, they reunite in Buenos Ares as he is planning a complicated operation. Rodrigo Santoro is playing the target of this con, who’s the owner of an international racing team. He is also trying to win over Margot Robbie’s character.

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy Stupid Love) are directing from their own original script (Santoro previously appeared in their movie I Love You Philip Morris). Shooting is scheduled to begin this October in New Orleans and Buenos Ares.

The Fifth Estate Poster & Photos Featuring Benedict Cumberbatch & Daniel Bruhl Debut

August 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fifth-estate-poster1
Even though no one’s seen The Fifth Estate yet (it debuts at TIFF in a few weeks), there are already fans of Wikileaks’ Julian Assange are already denouncing it, largely because it’s based on a book by Daniel Domscheit-Berg, a former right-hand man to Assange who later turned against the man and his methods.

Now a poster and some new images from the film have arrived, which you can see above and below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Triggering our age of high-stakes secrecy, explosive news leaks and the trafficking of classified information, WikiLeaks forever changed the game. Now, in a dramatic thriller based on real events, THE FIFTH ESTATE reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century’s most fiercely debated organization.

‘The story begins as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) team up to become underground watchdogs of the privileged and powerful. On a shoestring, they create a platform that allows whistleblowers to anonymously leak covert data, shining a light on the dark recesses of government secrets and corporate crimes.

‘Soon, they are breaking more hard news than the world’s most legendary media organizations combined. But when Assange and Berg gain access to the biggest trove of confidential intelligence documents in U.S. history, they battle each other and a defining question of our time: what are the costs of keeping secrets in a free society—and what are the costs of exposing them?”

‘The Fifth Estate is presented by DreamWorks Pictures and Reliance Entertainment in association with Participant Media and is produced by Steve Golin and Michael Sugar, with Bill Condon directing. The screenplay is by Josh Singer, based on the book “Inside WikiLeaks” by Daniel Domscheit-Berg and the Guardian book “WikiLeaks” by David Leigh and Luke Harding. The film will be released in U.S. theaters on October 18, 2013.’

The Butler Director Lee Daniels Suggests Black Men Still Can’t Come Out

August 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lee-danielsThere aren’t many African American directors working in Hollywood and even fewer openly gay African American directors. However Lee Daniels, whose risen up the Tinsel Town ranks with Precious, The Paperboy and now the number one box office hit The Butler, has bucked that trend.

He recently spoke to Larry King about his movie and his experiences as a black gay man. Daniels suggests it still very tough being gay in the black community, with plenty of pressure on you not to be open about who you are.

“Black men can’t come out,” he says. “Why? Because you simply can’t do it. Your family says it. Your church says it. Your teachers say it. Your parents say it. Your friends say it. Your work says it. So you’re living on this ‘DL’ thing and you’re infecting black women. And its killing us. The black culture and the hispanic culture have a thing about [homosexuality].”

Take a look at a clip from the interview below. (Via Out)

J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Teases Mystery New Project, ‘Stranger’, & It’s Pretty Creepy

August 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

J.J. Abrams’ love keeping secrets, and now he’s attempting to outdo himself, as his company, Bad Robot has released a teaser trailer under the title ‘Stranger’, but they haven’t said what it is, or even whether it relates to a film, TV series, something online or indeed something else entirely.

It’s pretty weird and creepy though!

At the moment there’s plenty of speculation but nothing particularly convincing, especially as it doesn’t seem to easily fit with anything Bad Robot is known to be producing. Hopefully all will be revealed soon. [Read more…]

Wanted’s Timur Bekmambetov Up To Direct Ben-Hur Remake

August 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

timur-bekmambetovAfter the success of The Hobbit and Skyfall, the newly flush MGM started thinking about making a new version of Ben-Hur, snapping up a new spec script based on Lew Wallace’s classic novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ by Lew Wallace. Now they’re moving forward with the idea, as Deadline reports that Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter helmer Timur Bekmambetow is in talks to direct.

Early reports about the new script, by Keith R. Clarke (The Way Back), said it was very different to the Oscar-winning 1959 Charlton Heston-starrer and more faithful to the book. William Wyler’s film focused on the feud between Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) and Messalla (Stephen Boyd), but this new film will apparently explore the characters’ formative years, when they grew up as best friends before the Roman Empire conquered Jerusalem.

The script also features Jesus Christ, who encounters Ben-Hur and whose tale is told in parallel to the title character. Ben-Hur begins to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, before he is killed by Pontius Pilate.

It’s something very different to what Bekmambetov has made before, but he could certainly bring some style to the movie.

New Pics From Amazing Spider-man Debut, Including A Hint At The Sinister Six

August 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amazing-spider-man-2-preview-pic13
For the last few months there have been rumours that Sony’s plans for The Amazing Spider-man 2, 3 & 4 are designed to lead to the formation of the villainous Sinister Six, although there’s been no confirmation that this selection of bad guys will show up on screen.

However now we’ve got out biggest hint yet that this is what will happen, with an image of producer Avi Arad sat underneath a soundstage with the name ‘Sinister 6’ written on it. Although it’s unlikely to be a stage shooting Amazing Spider-man 2, it’s certainly not a coincidence.

It’s one of six new images from the movie, which arrived via Coming Soon, which also includes a fresh look at Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Stan Lee showing up for him cameo and Dane DeHaan on camera duty. The Amazing Spider-man 2 is out May 2014.
