Shawn Levy Set To Direct This Is Where I Leave You

November 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Shawn Levy already has quite a few films on his plate as both a director and producer, but he’s adding one more as Variety report he’s is in final talks to direct the Warner Bros. comedy This Is Where I Leave You, replacing the previously attached Adam Shankman.

Back in May, Jason Bateman, Malin Akerman, Zac Efron, Leslie Mann, Jason Sudeikis, and Goldie Hawn joined the cast. Jason Bateman has since left the project, and it’s unclear if the other actors will still be available. The project has been in development at the studio since 2009.

The movie is based on Jonathan Tropper’s novel, which centre on a father who makes a final request before his death. He wants his dysfunctional, estranged family to spend seven days with one another after the patriarch’s funeral. Inevitably this causes a lot of problems.

It is believed that Shawn Levy wants to make this his next project, with production tentatively scheduled to begin next summer.

15th Annual British Independent Film Awards Nominees Announced

November 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The British Independent Film Awards have become an increasingly important part of the UK film calendar, celebrating the work of those fighting to make films outside the studio system. The nominations for the 15th annual Moët BIFAs have been announced today, at St Martins Lane, London by actor and BIFA Patron, Adrian Lester.

The most nominated movie this year goes to Broken with nine nominations, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Debut Director for Rufus Norris, Best Actor for Tim Roth and two Best Supporting Actor nominations for Cillian Murphy and Rory Kinnear. Sightseers and Berberian Sound Studio both picked up seven nominations each.

As always with the BIFAs, the nominations are a great mix of films ranging from those that have found success at the box office, to smaller movie relatively few have seen.

Joint directors of The Moët British Independent Film Awards’ Johanna von Fischer & Tessa Collinson commented: “In this our 15th year, we are delighted to welcome back six-time former host James Nesbitt. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated Pre-Selection Committee who watched over 200 films in order to produce the 2012 Nominations, which once again reflect the diverse range of British film talent, and also welcome this year’s appointed independent Jury who will now spend the next month considering the nominated films.”

Amanda Nevill, Chief Executive of the BFI, comments: “At 15 years old, the BIFAs are now firmly established as a key date in the UK film industry calendar and we’re delighted to be supporting this year’s awards. The BIFAs are the UK’s only awards focusing entirely on independent British films, as such they really help to shine a spotlight on the vast range and breadth of excellence in independent UK filmmaking – helping to promote independent British films to new audiences, and setting a focus on the Best of British just as the international awards season begins.”

The winners will be announced at the much anticipated 15th awards ceremony which will be hosted by actor and BIFA Patron, James Nesbitt, who returns for his seventh year, on Sunday December 9th at the Old Billingsgate in London.

#InvisibleParents Short Highlights Inequality For Gay Families In Europe

November 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Director Mike Buonaiuto scored a massive viral hit with his moving short Homecoming, which used the touching story of a soldier’s return home to push for equal marriage. Now Buonaiuto is back, teaming up with AllOut.org for a new short timed to coincide with National Adoption Week, which hopes to raise awareness of the inequalities facing gay parents throughout the EU.

As Allout put it in a petition they’re hoping we’ll all sign, ‘Same-sex families often stop being considered a family as soon as they set foot in a different country in the European Union – because the EU lacks a general legal framework to recognise these couples and their children across borders.’ The petition calls on the European Commission to address the situation.

It is surprising that while the EU assures things like free movement of people, stronger trade ties and that rules on everything from cheese to bananas are the same across the block, something as fundamental as a family can alter depending on where you are within the Union.

Andre Banks, Executive Director of AllOut.org commented, ‘EU member states pride themselves on integration, but their governments still fail to resolve the legal hurdles keeping same-sex families from full recognition across borders.’

MEP Michael Cashman has also joined the campaign, saying ‘Gay and lesbian parents can often find themselves legally invisible in a large percentage of the continent, putting their entire family in a very vulnerable situation, especially with regard to healthcare, holidays or family legal systems. The #InvisibleParents film argues that all children should be treated with legal equality, regardless of the sexual orientation of their parents. It is a brilliant way to allow people to connect with these very real issues and then do something about it.’

Organisers are encouraging people to share the film on social networking platforms and to use the Twitter hashtag #InvisibleParents

Jon Hamm & Daniel Radcliffe Bathe Together In A Young Doctor’s Notebook Photos

November 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sky Arts 1 certainly got a impressive cast for its four-part mini-series A Young Doctor’s Notebook, with Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe both signed up to play older and younger versions of the same character (we won’t bother wondering how 5ft 5in Radcliffe grew into 6ft Hamm over the years). Now some images from the series have shown up online, including one showing the two stars taking a bath together!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A Young Doctor’s Notebook is a four-part comedy drama based on a collection of short stories by the celebrated Russian writer and playwright Mikhail Bulgakov. The drama recounts Bulgakov’s semi-autobiographical experiences as a young doctor working in the small village of Muryovo at the dawn of the Russian Revolution in 1917.

‘Recounting from his notebooks, the Doctor considers his life and career as he tries to treat the patients of a village that is struggling to enter the modern age. Dealing not only with the superstitious and poorly educated patients but with his own inner demons, the doctor reveals doubts about his own competence and struggles with the immense burden of medical responsibility.

‘Jon Hamm takes on the role of the older doctor, who has a series of bleakly comic exchanges with his younger self, played Daniel Radcliffe.’

New Iron Man 3 Image Shows Off The Mandarin & His Ten Rings Of Power

November 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A new image has shown up online via Marvel from Iron Man 3, which doesn’t just give us another look at Ben Kingsley as the villainous Mandarin, but also shows us him wearing the 10 rings of power. The Marvel website also offers plenty of info on the rings, suggesting they’ll be causing Tony Stark all manner of trouble.

Here’s the info: Discovered by the Mandarin in China’s “Valley of Spirits,” the Ten Rings of Power are actually the product of the dragon-like race Axonn-Karr (or Makluans) from the planet Maklu-IV. The Axonn-Karr utilized them mainly as the power source for their interstellar craft’s engines. The rings’ functions currently cannot be explained by modern Earth science.

‘The Mandarin learned how to utilize the rings for own personal use and make them respond to his personal commands. Over the years, the Mandarin’s mind has actually come to inhabit the rings so that now no one else can make use of them. The Mandarin can also now control the rings over large distances.

The functions of each of his original set of rings are as follows:

LEFT HAND:
Pinky: Ice Blast. Freezes the air in its path and can lower an object’s temperature to almost absolute zero.
Ring Finger: Mento-Intensifier. Magnifies the Mandarin’s psychic energy enabling him to mentally control a person. Only effective at short range.
Middle Finger: Electro-Blast. Emits quantities of electrical energy determined by the wearer (Mandarin). Upper limit of output is unknown.
Index Finger: Flame Blast. Emits infrared radiation and can cause air to incandesce by igniting its molecules. Maximum out is unknown.
Thumb: White Light. Emits many different types of energy from the electro-magnetic spectrum. Frequently used as intense visible light and laser beams.

RIGHT HAND:
Pinky: Black Light. Creates area of “absolute blackness” where all light is absorbed. It is believed that this ring accesses the “Darkforce” used by people such as Darkstar and the Shroud.
Ring Finger: Disintegration Beam: Destroys bonds between atoms and molecules causing an object’s cohesion to fall apart. Needs 20 minutes recharge time between uses.
Middle Finger: Vortex Beam. Causes air to swirl about in a vortex at high speed. Can levitate objects, propel wearer (Mandarin) in flight and be used as a weapon.
Index Finger: Impact Beam. Projects concussive force of approximately 350 lbs. of TNT. Can also cause intense sonic vibrations and create magnetic waves.
Thumb: Matter Rearranger. Can rearrange atoms and/or molecules of substances or speed up/slow down their movements to result in various effects. Cannot actually transmute elements.

Quite how Iron Man is going to compete with all that is anyone’s guess, but he should have Iron Patriot to help him. The movie hits cinemas April 25th, 2013.

Allison Janney & More Say Bad Words For Jason Bateman

November 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of months ago it was revealed that Jason Bateman is planning to make his directorial debut with the film Bad Words. Now The Wrap reports he’s begun filling out the cast, signing up Allison Janney, Philip Baker Hall, Kathryn Hahn, Ben Falcone, and Rohan Chandz.

The movie follows a 41-year-old high school drop out (Bateman), who enters the National Quill Spelling Bee. Allison Janney will play Dr. Bernice Deagan, the director of the spelling bee group, while Philip Baker Hall will be the head of the organization. Rohan Chandz plays a fellow contestant who becomes friends with Jason Bateman’s character.

Andrew Dodge wrote the screenplay, which ended up on the Black List of the best unproduced screenplay in 2011. The movie will start shooting in Los Angeles this week.

Wreck-It Ralph Smashes Into US Box Office

November 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Wreck-It Ralph certainly got a good start this weekend, with the highest opening ever for a non-Pixar Disney animated movie. The film took $49.1 million, just ahead of Tangled’s $48.8 million debut. It’s a great start, helped by the fact it appealed to both boys and girls, and with little to challenge it in the family demographic over the next few weeks, it should have strong legs.

Robert Zemeckis’ return to live action, Flight, was no slouch either, with the Denzel Washington starring film taking a far better than expected $25.1 million in its first three days. On a per-theater average, that’s actually better than Wreck-It Ralph, as going against the conventional wisdom that for a big opening you need 3000+ screens, Flight opened on just 1800. It’s particularly good as well for an R rated movie with mixed reviews.

The final new entry on the chart was RZA’s directorial debut, The Man With The Iron Fists, which placed fourth with $8.2 million. Although about what was expected, it’s not a great start, although it’s always been thought the stylised kung-fu action would play better outside the US.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of November 2nd-4th:

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Wreck-It Ralph $49.1 $49.1
2 Flight $25.0 $25.0
3 Argo $10.2 $75.8
4 The Man With The Iron Fists $8.2 $8.2
5 Taken 2 $6.0 $125.6
6 Cloud Atlas $5.2 $18.2
7 Hotel Transylvania $4.5 $137.4
8 Paranormal Activity 4 $4.3 $49.5
9 Here Comes The Boom $3.6 $35.5
10 Silent Hill: Revelation $3.3 $13.9

Men Fined $1.5 Million Each For Pirating Gay Porn

November 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Here’s a bit of a wake up call for those who thought sharing porn online would have no repercussions, as Kywan Fisher of Virginia and Cormelian Brown of Delaware have each been fined $1.5 million for using their paid memberships of gay porn sites to download videos that they then illegally shared on GayTorrents.net.

Forbes reports that the summary judgements – which were the maximum allowed – were entered against the men after they failed to respond to summonses or show up in court. Cases against 13 other defendants are ongoing, with at least two heading for trial. The CEO of porn producer Flava Works, which launched the suits against the men, commented, “We want to go all the way. We want them to understand you can’t just steal.”

He added that with the judgements against the two men, “That was the maximum we were entitled to, so it wasn’t unexpected. But I thought they might tone it down.”

The men were tracked down due to the fact the site includes individual codes on each of its videos, so it knows exactly which members originally downloaded them from the site. It then used the details it had on file for these paying members to sue them for sharing the files.

Flava Works, which specialises in black and latino porn such as Mixxxed Nuts and the Thug Boy series, isn’t the only gay porn company who’ve gone after those who’ve shared their videos. It is perhaps unsurprising, as while the legit film industry has spent years campaigning against online filesharing, it’s believed to have hit the bottom line of porn producers far more tangibly. However some have seen the porn industry’s dogged tactics as a slightly bullying, including reports that some people who say they never illegally downloaded or shared porn have paid fines simply so their name wouldn’t publicly be released in connection with pornography. Whether there’s any truth to that is difficult to tell.

Kywan Fisher and Cormelian Brown are still trying to ignore the lawsuits as well as attempts to get in touch with them, but they’d better do something soon as they’ve certainly got a lot of cash they’re expected to pay.

Side Effects Trailer – Rooney Mara gets medicated in Steven Soderbergh’s film

November 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Steven Soderbergh has said this will be his last theatrical feature before he retires (the Liberarace TV movie Behind The Candelabra is still to come). Whether he really down leave cinema behind is yet to be seen, after all, he’s been threatening to retire for year, but not the first trailer for Side Effects has arrived, which is another of his star-studded tales.

This one has Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and is about a woman (Mara) who turns to prescription medication to deal with her anxiety over her husband’s (Tatum) release from prison. She begins to take a new brand of anti-depressant, prescribed by a doctor (Jude Law), who seems to have more than a professional interest in her. Before long, everything spirals badly out of control, when it appears a murder has been committed. Watch the trailer after the jump.

The film is set for release in the UK on March 15th, 2013. It certainly looks like it’ll be a dramatic one.

17 Great New The Hobbit Character Posters Debut

November 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The makers of The Hobbit seem to feel like they have a bit of a challenge before the first of the movies is released, which is that there’s an awful lot of new characters, mainly the dwarves, that need to be introduced. They’ve done a good job of making each one completely different from the others so they’ll be easily recognisable, but in marketing the movie they’re keen we get to know them before the film is released.

To help with that 17 new character posters have been released, featuring a bevy of new characters, including the dwarves and Bilbo, as well as old friends like Gollum, Gandalf and Galadriel. The posters debuted over at The Playlist, but you can see then above and below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The adventure of “The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.

‘Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and Martin Freeman, who won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the BBC series “Sherlock,” takes on the central role of Bilbo Baggins. Also reprising their roles from “The Lord of the Rings” movies are: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Orlando Bloom as Legolas; Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; and Andy Serkis as Gollum. The ensemble cast also includes (in alphabetical order) Richard Armitage, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan Turner.

‘The screenplays for “The Hobbit” films are by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson. Jackson is also producing the films, together with Fran Walsh and Carolynne Cunningham. The executive producers are Ken Kamins and Zane Weiner, with Philippa Boyens serving as co-producer.’

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 13th, 2012 from Warner Bros. Pictures, with The Desolation Of Smaug and There And Back Again arriving in 2013 and 2014. [Read more…]
