Jonathan Rhys Meyers In Talks For Mortal Instruments

August 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The cast of The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones is certainly coming together, with Lily Collins up for the lead role, while Lena Headey, Kevin Zegers, Jamie Campbell Bowers, Kevin Durand, Robert Sheehan and many others also attached. Now THR reports that Jonathan Rhys Meyers is in talks for the movie.

The movie, based on Cassandra Clare’s young adult fantasy novel, is about Clary Fray (Collins), a young woman living in New York City who discovers she comes from a long line of demon hunters. Rhys Meyers is in talks to play the key role of Valentine Morgenstern, a “powerful but insane” Shadowhunter who’s known to have extremist views.

Shooting will start later this month, with Karate Kid’s Harald Zwart directing.

Christopher McQuarrie Rewriting Without Remorse

August 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Christopher McQuarrie is well regarded as the writer of films such as The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie, and later this year will be filling out his directorial CV with Jack Reacher starring Tom Cruise. Now Deadline reports he’s working on a deal to rewrite the Tom Clancy adaptation Without Remorse for Paramount Pictures. The filmmaker may direct as well, although that has not been set in stone yet.

The project has been in development at the studio for years, with John Singleton attached to direct way back in October 2006. More recently in 2010, The Shield creator Shawn Ryan took a crack at the script. The novel, first published in 1993, is a spin-off of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series, following John Kelly (aka John Clark). The story takes place six months after his pregnant wife died in a car accident. He picks up Pam, a prostitute seeking refuge from her dangerous employers, who used her as a drug mule. They join forces to take down the drug lords.

There’s speculation that Paramount is pushing forward with this now so they can crossover Without Remorse with their upcoming Untitled Jack Ryan Project, which has Chris Pine attached to star, perhaps introducing Clark in that movie before he goes off on his own adventure.

Reese Witherspoon Is Gonna Be A Gay Man’s Beard

August 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Reese Witherspoon is planning on dating a gay person, at least on screen (and in many a gay man’s desperate wishes, that’s what she was doing with Jake Gyllenhaal too), as she’s signed on for a romantic comedy called The Beard, according to THR.

The title refers to someone who acts as a date for a gay person so that they appear to be straight. There’s not much more info about the movie than that, but we’d be willing to bet the plot will see Reese getting into all manner of confusion when she agrees to publicly be a gay guy’s date, but then meets the man of her dreams.

Witherspoon is currently shooting Devil’s Knot, Atom Egoyan’s take on the West Memphis Three murder case. She will also produce The Beard, although there’s no info on when it might shoot.

Joss Whedon Confirmed For The Avengers 2

August 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Much of The Avengers success wasn’t just down to bringing a load of superheroes together, it was in the way Joss Whedon did it. Marvel Studios seems to have realised that, as they’ve signed Joss to a three-year deal, which will cover The Avengers 2, development of a TV series and possibly other projects too.

At Comic-Con Whedon said he was yet to decide whether he would write and direct Avengers 2, but now it seems as deal has been struck as Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that Whedon is on-board for the highly-anticipated sequel. He’s also confirmed that Whedon is involved in the development of an ABC live-action television series that will be set inside the Marvel cinematic universe

Marvel’s The Avengers took the box office by storm this summer, raking in a massive $616.7 million at the domestic box office, and over $1.4 billion worldwide, making it the third highest grossing movie of all time. The sequel won’t hit theaters until at least 2015, since Marvel Studios currently has the sequels Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and an animated Guardians Of The Galaxy movie slated for release between now and 2014.

Julianne Hough Has Diablo Cody’s Time And A Half

August 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Julianne Hough may not have broken out with either Footloose of Rock Of Ages, however Hollywood hasn’t given up on her, as Variety reports that she’s in talks for screenwriter Diablo Cody’s latest project, Time and a Half, directed by Ol Parker.

The story is about a college graduate (Hough) who is forced to take a temporary job at a trophy store to make ends meet. She soon runs into her sister’s high school boyfriend at the shop, with whom she had a one-night stand with ages ago.

This will be Julianne Hough’s second turn at teaming up with Diablo Cody, as she recently wrapped production on the Untitled Diablo Cody Project, which serves as the writer’s directorial debut. The producers are currently looking for the right actress to portray the sister. The project won’t move forward until their ideal actress is found, with producers hoping to start production next year.

First Pic Of Daniel Day Lewis In Lincoln

August 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nope that’s not a colour photo of Abraham Lincoln himself, it’s Daniel Day-Lewis as the famed president in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming biopic. The movie is going to ignore Lincoln’s vampire fighting exploits and simply concentrate on the non-supernatural, focussing on the time around the Civil War. As well as premiering the image, EW has a quote from Spielberg saying, “Our movie is really about a working leader who must make tough decisions and get things done in the face of overwhelming opposition… [The film begins with] Lincoln’s realization that the Emancipation Proclamation, the thing he is most known for, was simply a war powers act that would easily be struck down by any number of lawyers after the cessation of hostilities after the Civil War. He needed to abolish slavery by constitutional measure — and that’s where we start.”

Lincoln is due to hit the UK on January 25th, 2013.

Documentary Coming About Legendary Continental Gay Bathhouse

August 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nowadays, gay bathhouses have a reputation that’s solely about sex, but back in the past, when there were still few places to gay people to meet up, some of them offered a lot more than dark rooms and glory holes (although they did offer that too). Perhaps the most famous is New York’s Continental Baths, which will be getting a feature-length documentary made about it, and is currently looking for funding through Kickstarter to get it through post-production. There are just a few days to go to reach is $12,000 target.

So why is the Continental worth making a doc about? Well, here’s what the Kickstarter page has to say, ‘The Continental Baths was a seminal gay New York City hotspot that existed from the late sixties to 1974. The baths themselves were a lavish Roman style affair, which were opened in the late 60’s in a newly post-stonewall NYC. Owner Steve Ostrow wanted to create a decadent and luxurious clubhouse where newly liberated men could explore with wanton abandon…

‘Along with the baths, The Continental was home to glamorous shows that attracted first class performers such as Cab Calloway, Peter Allen, Wayland Flowers, Patti Labelle and a then unknown Bette Midler, who (with her piano player Barry Manilow) became ringmaster to the revelry.

‘Continental is a stylish examination of a lively and lascivious piece of real estate that transcended sexual identity and acted as a beacon to the hip, beautiful and infamous. Housed at the former site of the legendary Ansonia Hotel at 230 W. 74th St., the Continental ultimately became one of the most important metropolitan keystones for a sexual revolution, fostering an environment of tolerance and indirectly contributing to a level of mainstream gay acceptance the likes of which has never been seen again.

‘Told through archival footage, photographs, music and the voices of owner Steve Ostrow as well as patrons, performers and opponents,Continental will be a thorough examination of a time and a place not so long ago when the word positive wasn’t so negative.’

Malcolm Ingram (Small Town Gay Bar, Bear Nation) will direct. If you fancy helping out, watch the film from Ingram above and then head over to Kickstarter.
