Kevin Costner Signs Up For Running Drama McFarland

July 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I think it’s fair to say that Kevin Costner likes sports. After all, there can’t be many other reasons he’s spent half his career making the likes of Bull Durham, Field Of Dreams, Tin Cup, For The Love Of The Game and Play It To The Bone. Now he’s heading back for the running drama McFarland, for Whale Rider director Niki Caro.

The film is based on a true story about a high school sport coach (Costner) who settles into McFarland, California, a poor, Latino community, and turns the cross-country running team into a championship-winning dynasty. Variety describes the movie as ‘a cross between Remember the Titans and Coach Carter.’

Costner hasn’t made that many film appearances in the past few years, but he’ll be hoping his role as Jonathan Kent in Man Of Steel will give him a bit of a career boost, and that McFarland can help with that too.

Ben Stiller & Jonah Hill Say Aloha

July 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ben Stiller and Jonah Hill are about to appear together in the alien invasion comedy The Watch, and it seems they had a good time working together, as THR reports that producer Shawn Levy is in talks with Stiller and Hill to headline Fox’s upcoming comedy Aloha.

Plot details for the film are being kept under wraps, but the title hints that it will most likely be set in Hawaii. The script for the comedy is being provided by Nick Stoller, who worked with Jonah Hill on Get Him to the Greek and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. This project’s fate will be determined by the scheduling and what kind of script the writer brings to the table.

The original idea for this new story was was conceived by Jonah Hill, and developed by Jonah Hill, Ben Stiller and Shawn Levy on the set of The Watch.

July 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last February, the inspirational stories of three LGBT young people were seen by millions when the first It Gets Better documentary special premiered on MTV and Logo in the US. It featured several of the more than 50,000 inspirational It Gets Better videos that have so far been uploaded to the likes of Youtube and the It Gets Better website, with people talking about how difficult LGBT experiences in their youth led to a happier adulthood.

The positive response to It Gets Better continues with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences last week nominating the special for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Nonfiction, Reality or Reality-Competition Program.

It Gets Better is now in the final phases of casting the second special, set to air in America this autumn, and they are once again looking for people who are open to sharing their stories on-camera. Man Of Steel Teaser Trailers – First look at Zack Snyder’s take on Superman

July 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Two different Man Of Steel teaser trailers debuted ahead of The Dark Knight Rises on Friday and now both of those have popped up online, and you can watch them here! It certainly suggests a new, grittier, more elegiac feel for as Superman movie, which perhaps isn’t surprising ans Chris Nolan is producing (with Zack Snyder directing). It’s mainly build-up with little special effects, but a nice debut for the film nonetheless, and shows us that this Clark Kent is going to be hiding from his destiny. Take a look at them both and see which you prefer. They are pretty similar, but with different voiceovers – one from Kevin Costner as Superman’s earthly father and the other with Russell Crowe as his alien daddy! As well as Henry Cavill as Superman the movie stars Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, and Michael Shannon as General Zod. Man Of Steel hits cinemas on June 14th, 2013.

Matthew McConaughey Losing 30lbs To Play AIDS Hero

July 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Matthew McConaughey in Magic Mike

In interviews for Magic Mike, Matthew McConaughey hinted that one of his upcoming roles would have a bit of a gay theme, and it seems we now know what that is. He’s told Larry King’s new web series that he’s preparing to star in The Dallas Buyer’s Club, about Ron Woodroof. McConaughey has been attached to the role for a while, but it now looks like it finally preparing to shoot.

Woodroof was an electrician and a homophobe who in the 1980s was told he had AIDS. At the time it was seen as a death sentence, but Woodroof set up a smuggling operation to bring drugs into the US from Mexico, which could prolong people’s live even though they’d not been approved for use in America. He wound up living six more years and saved or prolonged the lives of many others. Hillary Swank will also stars, with Jean Marc Vallee (C.R.A.Z.Y., The Young Victoria) directing.

McConaughey told King he’s busy losing 30 pounds for the role, so he can convincingly play the emaciated Woodroof. ‘I should not look healthy by the time I’m [filming] this’, he says, adding that he’s drinking a lot of tea and treating it as ‘a bit of a spiritual cleanse, mental cleanse.’

‘It takes a while for your body to understand that it has to feed off of itself and that you’re not going to give it something else from the outside,’ he says.

It seems there’s still some work to do on the funding though, as McConaughey says ‘It was very tough to get the money for that one, being the subject material and it’s a period piece. We’ve been really, really close for a long time. There’s momentum right now.’

The film has had a rocky history, as back in 2008 it was all set to go ahead with Lars and the Real Girl’s Ryan Gosling and Craig Gillespie re-teaming for the flick. At various points the likes of Brad Pitt have also been interested, while Marc Forster considered it as a directing project. Now it finally seems to be heading towards the camera with McConaughey starring.

BearCity 2: The Proposal Trailer – Life beyond twinkville

July 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the world of gay movies, it sometimes seems that everyone is pretty, skinny and in their early 20s (a complaint many make about gay culture generally), so it’s always nice to see a film that breaks that mould. And it’s perhaps even better when the movie is a sequel, showing there were enough people out there who wanted to see the first non-twinky instalment two make a part two.

The film is Bear City 2: The Proposal, which features a cast of burly and hairy fellows, as well as some more recognisable names like Kevin Smith, Kathy Najimy and Richard Riehle. Here’s the synopsis: ‘BearCity is a hirsute “Sex and the City,” following the funny, romantic, and occasionally dramatic adventures of a group of bears and cubs in New York City. The sequel, BearCity 2 follows our familiar characters and a few new ones as they head to Provincetown, MA for Bear Week!’

The film had its world premiere last night at Los Angeles’s John Anson Ford Amphitheatre as part of Outfest. It’ll hit San Francisco at the end of the month, but there’s no news at the moment on when we Brits might get to see it.

Taylor Kitsch Offered Need for Speed Movie?

July 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Few actors have had the chance to hit the A-list at lightning speed like Taylor Kitsch. This year John Carter, Battleship and Savages have given him the chance to be a huge star, but sadly none of the movie has really caught on at the box office.

Hollywood isn’t giving up on him though, as according to Zap2It, DreamWorks has offered him the lead in a movie based on the videogame Need For Speed.

It should be noted that the studio denied an offer has been made, although insiders claim he is the only contender for the part. Scott Waugh has signed on to direct the movie from a screenplay written by brothers George Gatins and John Gatins. The project is adapted from the long-running Electronic Arts videogame racing franchise, although no story details are given. DreamWorks is seeking to launch a franchise similar to the Fast & Furious series.

Last month a 2014 release date was set, although it isn’t known when production will begin.

Emile Hirsch In Talks For Lone Survivor

July 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Emile Hirsch is one of those actors who’s attempted to straddle the line between indie and mainstream, so that he has enough Hollywood clout to allow him to pick and choose more interesting small projects. However his mass-market movies, such as Speed Racer and The Darkest Hour, haven’t turned out too well, so he could do with a bit of a career bump.

Now he’s in early talks to star in another proper Hollywood movie, as director Peter Berg wants him for Lone Survivor, according to Variety. He’d join a cast that already includes Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, and Taylor Kitsch.

The project is based on the memoir of Navy SEAL Marcus Littrell, which tells his journey of survival when he and his SEAL team members were ambushed by the Taliban in Afghanistan. The soldiers were pinned down in the Hindu Kush mountains while on a mission to eliminate a terrorist. Mark Wahlberg is playing Littrell, with Ben Foster, Taylor Kitsch, and Emile Hirsch playing other SEAL team members.

Peter Ber is directing from his own adapted screenplay. It isn’t certain when the movie may shoot.

RoboCop Gets Jackie Earle Haley & Possibly Jaye Baruchel

July 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jackie Earle Haley has joined the growing cast of RoboCop for MGM and director José Padilha. Jay Baruchel is also reportedly circling one of the final lead roles in the remake of the 80s sci-fi, according to Deadline.

Haley will play Maddox, who gives the crime-fighting cyborg (Joel Kinnaman) military training before RoboCop goes out to clean up the mean streets of Detroit. It isn’t known which role Baruchel may play The cast also includes Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, and Hugh Laurie.

Here’s the official synopsis, as released at Comic-Con last week: ‘In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

‘Director José Padilha (Elite Squad) reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as the title character, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises) as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) as media mogul Pat Novak. RoboCop is being produced by Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, with Eric Carraro as Executive Producer. The film is currently in pre-production and slated for a summer 2013 release.’

New Skyfall Video Blog – Take a look at the return of the Aston DB5

July 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m not sure if normal people care about James Bond’s cars as much as car marketers do, but there’s little doubt 007’s automobiles have a long history and have got a lot of publicity. Now it’s time to unveil Skyfall’s main auto, the Aston DB5, which made it debut on Top Gear. Skyfall opens at cinemas across the UK on 26th October 2012, and sees Bond’s loyalty to M tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.
