Barry Pepper Bags Two Roles

November 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

If all had gone to plan, Barry Pepper would be shooting Lone Ranger right now, but as the start date of that movie got pushed back to to major behind-the-scenes wrangling over the budget, it’s allowed him to take roles in two very different sorts of film.

According to Variety, Pepper has taken a role in Broken City for director Allen Hughes. After that he will star in Ric Roman Waugh’s action drama Snitch. Rather handily both films are shooting simultaneously in New Orleans. In Broken City, the actor will play a closeted councilman. The film is a thriller about a Brooklyn detective (Mark Wahlberg) tasked with identifying a politician’s wife’s secret lover. The movie also stars Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta Jones.

Snitch, which stars Dwayne Johnson, is based on a true story and follows a father whose life is shattered when his son is sentenced to 30 years in prison on drug charges. The dad then risks his life by going undercover to try and nail a drug kingpin in order to reduce his son’s sentence. Barry Pepper will play a DEA agent who ends up helping the father.

After filming both those movies, Pepper plans to go back to Lone Ranger, so he’s going to be a busy boy.

New The Iron Lady Trailer

November 14, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A new trailer for the upcoming The Iron Lady has arrived, via The Daily Mail, but we’ve embedded it below (which should help those of you who understandably have an aversion to going anywhere near anything to do with the Daily Mail). Although some Mrs. T. lovers are still uncertain about Meryl Streep playing the great lady – partly because they immediately assumed the film will be a liberal hatchet job – she certainly seems to be doing a good job here! The film sees Maggie as an older woman looking back over her remarkable career, becoming Britain’s first female Prime Minister and one of the world’s most famous women, while facing a divided nation and becoming hated by many in the UK. The film opens in the UK on January 6th.

Lego Movie Gets The Greenlight

November 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

While a couple of years ago Hollywood had big plans to turn virtually every toy and game into a movie, surprisingly few have moved forward, partly due to the realisation that it’s tough to turn a plotless toy into a worthwhile movie.

However at least one has got the greenlight, as Variety reports that Warner Bros has given the greenlight to the Lego film that’s been in development. The live-action/CGI hybrid movie will be a family comedy based on the popular building blocks, and takes place in the magical land of Lego. No further plot details have been released at this time, but it’ll be interesting to discover how they’re fitting in the concept of Lego blocks into the film and whether the inhabitants of the island are the little Lego men (and if they are, how they’re going to make that not seem silly).

More details about the movie, which is likely to be 80% animated, should be released later this week, and casting is set to begin in January (although work of the CGI will begin pretty much immediately). Warner Bros. is eyeing a 2014 release date for Lego: The Movie, with Robot Chicken’s Chris McKay recently bought on board to co-direct alongside 21 Jump Street duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Russell Brand Plans To Steal The President’s Girlfriend

November 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Despite the fact that it doesn’t seem audiences are all that interested in him as a movie star, Russell Brand is trying to turn that around, and now has a new film up his sleeve that he plans to both produce and star in. According to THR, he’s attached to The President Stole My Girlfriend for Warner Bros.

Matt Portenoy, who recently finished a draft of the long-in-development Porky’s remake, has written the screenplay, which, according to Brand, was inspired by the night he invited Warner Bros. President Jeffrey Robinov to dinner. The story will follow a ‘sexy hippie’ who loses his girl to the President (as if nowadays a signle man could get elected to the top office in America).

The movie will be the first film out of Brand’s new production company, Branded Films.

Sacha Baron Cohen On For Django Unchained

November 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It’s starting to seem there’s not going to be anyone who isn’t in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained – or at least that every role will be filled with a recognisable face. The latest to join the throng is Sacha Baron Cohen who Variety says is in final negotiations to join the cast.

Baron Cohen will play Scotty, a gambler who purchases Django’s slave wife (Kerry Washington) to use as a female companion. Scotty is apparently a smaller role, but he plays a vital part in the story.

Baron Cohen will join a cast which includes Jamie Foxx as Django and Leonardo DiCaprio as evil plantation owner Calvin Candie, along with Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Gerald McRaney, Dennis Christopher, Kurt Russell and Laura Cayouette.

Colin Firth Offered Oldboy Villain

November 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Colin Firth may not be the first person who springs to most people’s minds to play a dark villain, but it appears Spike Lee thinks differently, as Twitch reports that The King’s Speech star has been offered the bad guy role in Lee’s Oldboy remake. It isn’t known yet if the actor plans to accept the offer or not.

If he takes on the part, Firth will play Adrian, who squares off against Josh Brolin’s lead character. Chan-wook Park directed the original Oldboy, a South Korean thriller which followed a man seeking revenge against those who kept him in confinement for over 15 years.

Back in September it was revealed that Rooney Mara is the front runner for Oldboy’s female lead, but there’s been no news about her involvement since then. There’s also still the possibility Christian Bale will be in the movie, but he’s apparently not making a decision on which project to take on next until after he wraps production on The Dark Knight Rises. It isn’t known when production will begin on Oldboy.

Immortals Tops The US Box Office

November 14, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Despite some rather stinging reviews, Immortals has gotten off to a pretty good start at the US box office with $32 million dollars. That may not be as much as the likes of 300 and Clash of The Titans, but still marks the biggest opening for a film not released by one of the six major studios since The Expendables.

Adam Sandler’s Jack And Jill had to settle for second spot with $26 million, slightly lower than most of Sandler’s movies, but still ahead of Funny People. The film film should play well over the next couple of weeks though, with those looking for a laugh over Thanksgiving.

The only other new entry was J. Edgar, which despite the hype and star power of Leo DiCaprio made only $11.4 million. That’s not an amazing start, but is actually slightly ahead of Clint Eastwood’s last movie, Hereafter. Although with rather mixed reviews it may struggle in the weeks ahead.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of November 11th-13th, 2011.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Immortals $32.0 $32.0
2 Jack And Jill $26.0 $26.0
3 Puss In Boots $25.5 $108.8
4 Tower Heist $13.2 $43.9
5 J. Edgar $11.4 $11.5
6 A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas $5.9 $23.2
7 In Time $4.1 $30.6
8 Paranormal Activity 3 $3.6 $100.8
9 Footloose $2.7 $48.8
10 Real Steel $2.0 $81.7

First Look At New Toy Story Short

November 11, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The pic above is our first look at the new Toy Story Toon, ‘Small Fry’, which will be playing in front of The Muppets when it arrives in the UK on February 10th next year. In the second of these Toy Story Shorts (the first being Hawaiian Vacation, which played in front of Cars 2), Buzz Lightyear is left behind at a fast food restaurant when a kids’ meal toy version of Buzz takes his place. While Bonnie’s toys are stuck with the annoying three-inch-tall Buzz impersonator, the real Buzz is trapped in the restaurant at a support group for discarded toys. As Woody and the gang devise a way to rescue their friend, Buzz tries to escape the toy psychotherapy meeting.

Mini Buzz is a bit creepy if you ask me, but you’ve got to trust that anything Toy Story related is gonna be fun.

The Muppets Do Bollywood

November 11, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We thought we’d seen the end of the fun Muppet parody trailer, but thanksfully another one has shown up, this time with the gang going a bit Bollywood! The films due out in the US imminently, but it doesn’t come to the UK until February 17th, 2012. Here’s the synopsis: ‘When Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater, they help Kermit reunite the Muppets to stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theatre.’

Snow White & The Huntsman Trailer

November 11, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With rival Snow White movies lining up next year, the battle is on between them. Snow White & The Huntsman has a somewhat more difficult task and it hits cinemas three months after Tarsem’s Mirror Mirror. However after a wonderfully gothic banner arrived the other day and now this visually gorgeous trailer, it’s likely to be Huntsman that audiences are interested in (despite the presence of the always morose Kristen Stewart). Take a look at the trailer and prepare to be far more impressed that you ever expected to be by a Snow White movie. The movie arrives in cinemas June 2012.
