Anna Kendrick Finds The Company You Keep

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Director Robert Redford is certainly filling out the cast for his upcoming political thriller The Company You Keep, with Variety reporting that the increasingly impressive ensemble now includes Anna Kendrick, Terrence Howard, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Elliott, and newcomer Jackie Evancho, an 11-year-old finalist on America’s Got Talent. They join Robert Redford, Shia LaBeouf, Brit Marling, Nick Nolte, Susan Sarandon, Richard Jenkins, Julie Christie, Stephen Root, Stanley Tucci and Chris Cooper in the Lem Dobbs-scripted pic, based on the novel by Neil Gordon.

Robert Redford stars as Jim Grant, a former Weather Underground militant wanted by the FBI for 30 years, who must go on the run when a young, ambitious reporter (Shia LaBeouf) exposes his true identity. Anna Kendrick will play Diana, a young FBI agent and Shia LaBeouf’s former flame, who provides him with that information he needs to uncover the truth about Grant and a Bank of Michigan robbery.

Terrence Howard will play Cornelius, the senior FBI agent on the case who has relentlessly pursued Grant across the nation and now leads the task force assigned to take down the Weather Underground fugitives who have been on the run for three decades. Brendan Gleeson will play Henry Osborne, the retired Michigan Chief of Police who investigated the bank robbery in the 1960s, while Sam Elliott will be Mac, Julie Christie’s employer in the marijuana trade who used to be romantically involved with her. Jackie Evancho will play Robert Redford’s daughter, who recently lost her mother and is unaware of her father’s militant past.

It’s an incredible cast for what should be a very intriguing movie. The political action thriller is currently filming in Vancouver.

Drive Gets Sued For Not Being Fast & Furious

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

This is one of those stories where you have to wonder whether there’s something more going on than first meets the eye. Moviefone has managed to uncover a legal complaint by a Michigan woman who is suing the distributor of the acclaimed movie Drive for false advertising.

Sarah Deming filed a lawsuit against FilmDistrict (as well as the cinema where she saw the movie), claiming the trailer misled her into thinking it was an action movie along the lines of Fast & Furious. The fact a very brief bit of research would have told exactly what Drive was – as well that the trailer doesn’t make it look much like Fast & Furious – doesn’t seem to have crossed her mind. And even if it did, is it worth a lawsuit? Indeed her real problem seems to be that she’s so dim that she decided a film called Drive had to be like like Fast & Furious, and when it wasn’t she was upset. Her lawsuit says, “[The studio] promoted the film Drive as very similar to the Fast & Furious, or similar series of movies. Drive bore very little similarity to a chase, or race action film…having very little driving in the motion picture.”

However while mismarketing is the main substance of her suit, it appears it may be a pretext Deming has used to make a statement against what she perceives as anti-semitism in the movie. Another part of her companint says, “Drive was a motion picture that substantially contained extreme gratuitous defamatory dehumanizing racism directed against members of the Jewish faith, and thereby promoted criminal violence against members of the Jewish faith.” However seeing as it’s difficult to class the film as even vaguely anti-semitic (beyond Ron Perlman’s gangster being Jewish), God know what she was thinking here.

Sarah Deming is not only seeking to be reimbursed for the cost of her Drive ticket, but she is also seeking a ban on misleading movie trailers, and there’s also talk of turning it into a class action lawsuit. Maybe this one woman did just get to the end of her tether and launch a lawsuit that makes her look like an idiot, but I still can’t escape the feeling there’s more to this than meets the eye.

Diego Boneta Signs Up For Paradise Lost

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Diego Boneta may not be much of a name now, having only had a few guest spots in the likes of 90210, but the presumption is that with a lead role in the musical Rock Of Ages, the Mexican musician/actor will be a much better known by this time next year. It’s probably that which has helped him snag a role in Alex Proyas’ adaptation of John Milton’s classic poem, Paradise Lost.

Deadline reports that the actor will portray Adam, the first man on Earth, opposite Camilla Belle, who’s already been cast as Eve. I know Milton’s tale of the huge battle in heaven and the fall of Lucifer isn’t exactly scientific, but I’m pretty certain the first man and woman on Earth weren’t white/hispanic, which both Bell and Boneta are. But having a black Adam & Eve would probably freak out redneck, unthinking, bible belt Americansm so Belle and Boneta are probably a safer choice. It’ll also be interesting to see how the film handles the first human’s nudity – will it be fig leaves all round, or an extended version of the nude scenes in Austin Powers?

Bradley Cooper, Ben Walker, Casey Affleck, Callan McAuliffe, Dominic Purcell and Djimon Hounsou will also star as the varioius angelic factions fighting it out. The film starts shooting soon for release in 2013.

Pete Travis Not Out Of Dredd After All

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

At the weekend we reported that director Pete Travis (Vantage Point), was no longer part of the team that’s putting a new film version of Judge Dredd together, and that writer/producer Alex Garland had taken over in the editing room and would complete the project. There were even talks of reshoots being needed (although no one was sure who would helm them) and that Garland may have sought a co-directing credit.

However, now Travis and Garland have stepped forward and issued a statement refuting what was said in the initial LA Times report that brought us news of possible problems on Dredd. They told the Times that, “During all stages of the filmmaking, ‘Dredd’ has been a collaboration between a number of dedicated creative parties. From the outset we decided on an unorthodox collaboration to make the film. This situation has been misinterpreted. To set the record straight, Pete was not fired and remains a central part of the collaboration, and Alex is not seeking a co-director credit. We are all extremely proud of the film we have made, and respectfully suggest that it is judged on viewing when its released next year.”

It’s interesting that they use the words ‘misinterpreted’ rather than wrong, as it still suggests Garland may be in charge of all things post-production. Indeed from that statement it’s still possible that Travis has pretty much removed himself from Dredd, it’s just that he wasn’t fired. As they say though, we should wait to judge the film when we see it, but history suggests that once a film starts having problems in post-production (which on balance it still seems Dredd has), it’s difficult to overcome them.

Tom Cruise May Prove We Are Mortals

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Tom Cruise seems big on sci-fi at the moment, having tried to get At The Mountains Of Madness off the ground and currently preparing to film Joseph Kosinski’s Horizons. Now it seems he’s got another as THR hints that he is currently in talks to headline the sci-fi war thriller We Are Mortals, which was previously known as All You Need Is Kill.

Doug Liman is directing this from that puts a Groundhog Day style twist on an alien invasion that takes place in the distant future. When a new recruit is killed in action, he is forced to relive the brutal battle of that day and the events leading up to it over and over again. Through this, he becomes a better warrior, and discovers a way to beat the aliens in battle.

It should be noted THR only gives this a passing mention and it sounds as if it’s a long way from being signed (last we heard Warner wanted Brad Pitt). It isn’t clear when the film will go before cameras. No further information on a production start date has been offered at this time.

We Are Mortals comes to theaters in 2013. The film is directed by Doug Liman.

Sony Already Planning Steve Jobs Biopic

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Hollywood is not renowned for leaving a respectful amount of time before jumping on the bones of a tragedy – indeed they seem to view it the opposite way to normal people. To most people the announcement a couple of days after Steve Jobs’ death that Sony is buying a biography of him so they can make a movie biopic seems like profiteering out of tragedy, however in the world of Hollywood it is seen as a compliment.

To execs it’s a mark of respect that someone is seen as noteworthy enough that it’s worth trying to be the first to make a movie about them (and there’s also the fact things get a lot easier after someone dies, as you can’t libel a dead person, so legally a death makes creating a biopic a lot easier).

Variety reports that Sony has puchased the upcoming biopic, Steven Jobs, written by Walter Isaacson, the former CEO of CNN and managing editor of Time Magazine. Mark Gordon will produce the adaptation, although it doesn’t seem that Sony has a writer attached to adapt the book at the moment.

Simon & Schuster will publish the book later this month, which was written based on two years worth of interviews with Steve Jobs. Aside from being Apple’s co-founder, Jobs also served as the CEO of Pixar Animation Studios and was a part owner of Walt Disney Studios.

Pete Travis Out Of Dredd

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It’s never good news when between shooting a movie and it getting to cinemas a director leaves a project. However that’s what happened with the upcoming new take on Judge Dredd. Pete Travis (Vantage Point) has left the project in the middle of post-production, with the LA Times citing “creative disagreements with producers and executives”, which is the stock Hollywood answer anytime there’s a dispute. It’s not entirely clear if Travis walked away or if he’s been removed from Dredd.

Screenwriter/producer Alex Garland is now likely to take over the project in the editing room, and may seek a director’s credit. Dredd wrapped principal photography earlier this year and it seems the producers and executives in charge of the production were not pleased with the footage Pete Travis was delivering. However an insider claims that while Pete Travis isn’t involved in the post-production process, he is still keeping tabs on the project.

There is also the possibility that Dredd may undergo reshoots, although it isn’t known who would direct those. Many had wondered if there were issues with Dress, as the release date kept slipping backward, from the end of this year until it wasn’t due to arrive until September 21st, 2012. However the delay does mean there time to try and fix things, although it’s rare for a movie to be able to pull things back after ructions like this.
