ID:A (DVD)

May 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tuva Novotny, Flemming Enevold, Carsten Bjornlund, Arnaud Binard
Director: Christian E. Christiansen
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 14th, 2012

Thanks to the likes of The Killing and Borgen, Scandinavian thrillers are the in thing at the moment. However these bursts in popularity for particular bits of world entertainment mean an awful lot of stuff gets released hoping to cash-in on the phenomenon, whether it’s top quality stuff or not. ID:A definitely feels like it come from the second rank of Scandinavian thrillers, despite the presence of Oscar winning director Christian E. Christiansen and Lars Von Trier’s Zentropa producing.

The movie opens with a woman waking up in a French river, with a scar on her stomach but no memory of who she is or how she got there. Adopting the name Aliena, she tries to work out who she is and soon becomes aware that mysterious heavies are looking for someone with her description. When she works out she could be Danish, she heads north, finding a clue on the way when she recognises the voice of famous opera singer Just Ore. [Read more…]

The Last Summer Of La Boyita (DVD)

April 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Guadalupe Alonso, Nicolas Treise, Mirella Pascaul, Gabo Correa
Director: Julia Solomonoff
Running Time: 85 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: April 23rd, 2012

Why do people in rural Argentina, a country that speaks Spanish, look like they just fell out of 19th Century France? The continental cultural melting pot always adds an extra layer of interest to South American movies, where various European cultures from all sorts of different eras butt up against indigenous cultures and the modern world. That’s in the background of The Last Summer Of La Boyita, a charming and somewhat brave film that takes a look at the ambiguity of gender, as seen through the eyes of children [Read more…]

Private Romeo (DVD)

April 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Hale Appleman, Seth Numrich, Charlie Barnett, Matt Doyle
Director: Alan Brown
Running Time: 94 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 23rd, 2012

Romeo & Juliet but gone gay in a military academy. That’s what Private Romeo is and it’s just as intriguing yet problematic as that sounds. A group of lads at a military school are studying Shakespeare’s great romantic tragedy. However they don’t leave the Bard’s words behind when the bell rings, with Romeo & Juliet taking over their lives as two of the boys develop a forbidden love. However as rivalries grow this newfound love could develop into full blown tragedy.

It’s certainly an interesting idea, especially as the film keeps Shakespeare’s verse, but there are some major problems. Writer/director Alan Brown has chopped Shakespeare’s text down, added some modern music and social media touches and turned Juliet into a boy, but it never quite feels as if he makes the whole concept work. The Ledge (Blu-ray)

April 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Patrick Wilson, Liv Tyler, Terrence Howard
Director: Matthew Chapman
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 16th, 2012

There’s a lot of talent involved in The Ledge and you can understand what attracted the cast to this philosophical, high concept thriller, but unfortunately a script that’s muddier than it ought to be results in a film that feels as if it’s not living up to its potential.

Detective Hollis (Terrence Howard) is having a bad day, as he’s just discovered he’s infertile and that his kids are therefore somebody else’s. He’s then called to a dramatic situation where a man called Gavin (Charlie Hunnam) is standing on a ledge threatening to jump. While Hollis tries to talk him down, Gavin tells his story, which involves meeting the ultra-religious Joe and Shana Harris (Patrick Wilson and Liv Tyler). As Gavin is an atheist, their initial interactions are rather prickly, especially when Joe is openly homophobic to Gavin’s gay roommate, Chris (Christopher Gorham). [Read more…]

Beauty (Skoonheid) (Cinema)

April 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Deon Lotz, Charlie Keegan, Michelle Scott
Director: Oliver Hermanus
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: April 20th, 2012

Winner of the Queer Palm at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Beauty is one of those films on queer themes which stretches beyond just a gay audience. It’s a thought-provoking film full of tension, which will stay in your head long after the credits role.

Francois (Deon Lotz) is a middle-aged man living in South Africa. On the surface everything seems perfectly fine, although his marriage seems utterly devoid of any sign of affection. However his life is actually a morass of contradictions, so that he hates gay people, but goes off to retreats to have sex with others men (although actual gays and blacks are banned from these occasions). He seems to have everything pretty much under control though until he meets Christian (Charlie Keegan), the son of a long-lost friend. [Read more…]

The Doom Generation (DVD)

April 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Rose McGowan, James Duval, Johnathan Schaech
Director: Gregg Araki
Running Time: 80 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: March 26th, 2012

The second part of Gregg Araki’s Teen Apocalypse trilogy – after Totally F***ed Up and before Nowhere – The Doom Generation holds a special place as one of the few films that truly helps define mid-90s indie cinema. It’s a movie that feeds off Generation X nihilism and the anger of post-punk youth to create a road trip film that feels both meaningful and pointless at the same time.

Amy (Rose McGowan) and her slightly dim boyfriend Jordan (James Duval) are out one night when their paths cross that of drifter Xavier (Johnathan Schaech). While Amy at first wants nothing to do with him, a strange bond develops after Xavier saves her life by literally shooting a gun-toting shop owner’s head off. [Read more…]

Jitters (DVD)

April 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Atli Oskar Fjalarsson, Hreindis Ylva Garoarsdottir, Gisli Orn Garoarsson
Director: Baldvin Zophoniasson
Running Time: 93 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 9th, 2012

We don’t get to see a lot of Icelandic movies, partly because as a nation of just over 300,000 people, they don’t exactly produce an endless stream of films of international calibre. However Iceland does make a few films each year and every so often something emerges from the country that deserves a wider audience. Jitters is one of them, a kind of Icelandic Skins, centring on a boy coming to terms with being gay, while his friends have their own issues with teenage life.

Rather than Iceland, the opening of the movie takes place in the UK, where young Gabriel (Atli Oskar Fjalarsson) is on a three week trip to Britain. He shares a room with Markus (Haraldur Ari Stefansson) and on the last night they share a kiss. Once back in Iceland, Gabriel hopes there will be more, but Markus treats it very much as if it never happened. [Read more…]

Plan B (2009)

April 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Manuel Vignau, Lucas Ferraro, Mercedes Quinteros
Director: Marco Berger
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 13th, 2010

When Bruno sees his ex-girlfriend Ana with her new boyfriend, Pablo, he decides he wants her back, even though she only seems interested in occasional sex sessions. Realising the usual tactics won’t work to convince her – he comes up with a Plan B. He’s heard Pablo has had liaisons with guys, so Bruno determines that he’ll befriend Pablo without letting him know who he is, and then make him fall in love with him. Then, after this causes Pablo and Ana to break up, he can swoop in and be her knight in shining armour when she’s sad and lonely.

Admittedly it is the sort of plan that could go hideously wrong at any moment, but he manages to meet and get in with Pablo, convincing him that he’s not the guy Ana has a picture of on her wall. However while Bruno is convinced he’s being devious and clever, something happens that he never expected; he starts having genuine feelings for Pablo. [Read more…]

Absent (Ausent) (DVD)

April 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Carlos Echevarría, Javier De Pietro, Antonella Costa
Director: Marco Berger
Running Time: 86 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 9th, 2012

Winner of the Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival – a gong given to the best movie on LGBT themes – Absent comes to DVD fresh from a centrepiece screening at the recent London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival in March.

The film is about a teenage boy, Martin (Javier De Pietro), who pretends to have something wrong with his eye so that his teacher, Sebastian, has to take him to the hospital. When they’ve finished with the doctor, Martin comes up with a convoluted story about having arranged to stay the night with a friend that they can’t get in touch with and then gives reasons why he can’t go home. Unsure what to do, the teacher decides to take him back to his apartment and let him stay the night. It’s clear though the student has ulterior motives, being somewhat flirtatious and touching Sebastian’s leg while he sleeps. [Read more…]

North Sea Texas (Cinema)

April 4, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jelle Florizoone, Mathias Vergels, Eva van der Gucht, Thomas Coumans
Director: Bavo Defurne
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 6th, 2012

While adolescence is one of cinema’s favourite subjects (and for various reasons a virtual obsession in gay and lesbian cinema), few films find a balance that feels as if it’s getting to the truth about ‘coming of age’. Bavo Defurne’s North Sea Texas does just that, telling a familiar story yet managing to make it feel fresh, acutely observed and charming. Much of this comes from evoking a strong sense of the early 1970s, great cinematography and excellent performances from a mostly inexperienced cast. It doesn’t hurt either that the strong characters avoid clichés.

Pim (Jelle Florizoone) is a teenager living with his floozy former beauty queen mother in a Belgian coastal town. His mother is more interested in how Pim makes her feel than the boy himself, although this does give him a small amount of freedom to lust after his next door neighbour, Gino (Mathias Vergels).
