Lifeforce (Blu-ray)

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Peter Firth, Steve Railsback, Mathilda May, Frank Finlay, Patrick Stewart
Director: Tobe Hooper
Running Time: 116 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: October 14th 2013

In the 1980s, Cannon Films became a prolific producer of low-to-mid budget movies across a whole range of genres, who were best known for cheap and cheerful action-thrillers such as Missing In Action and American Ninja. However with Lifeforce they wanted to go big, hiring Tobe Hooper shortly after Poltergeist to make them a sci-fi epic. [Read more…]

Starring: Dan Stevens, Emily Browning, Dominic Cooper, Hattie Morahan
Director: Christopher Menaul
Running Time: 93 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 14th 2013

Set against the backdrop of the Cornish coast in 1913, Summer In February follows the true story of the Lamorna group of Newlyn Artists. She hopes to fulfil her dreams of becoming an artist and is excited to be welcomed into the group who’ve set themselves up on the Lamorna estate. [Read more…]

Spiders (DVD)

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Patrick Muldoon, Christa Campbell, William Hope, Shelly Varod, Brian Hankey
Director: Tibor Takacs
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 14th 2013

3D has largely been limited to the cinema. While 3D Blu-ray has attempted to bring it to the small screen, nearly all the releases have been for cinema movies when they come to the home. However Spiders comes direct to Blu-ray as a 3D release, which may mark a new horizon for straight-to-disc movies. However on DVD we only get it in two-dimensions, which robs the film of a lot of the fun it might have had – which would have been mild anyway. [Read more…]

Epic (Blu-ray)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Colin Farrell, Beyonce Knowles, Chris O'Dowd
Director: Chris Wedge
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: October 7th 2013

I have to admit that the trailers for Epic left me cold. The title seemed random, the story silly and the whole thing felt like an attempt to cash in on Avatar for the family audience. Well, there is a little of the eco theme and visual style of Avatar in there, but I have to say how surprised I was by the film, which is far more entertaining than I’d expected (even if it is a bit silly).

In the film the forests are full of two-inch tall creatures, split between the good, peace loving Treemen and their allies, and the evil Boggans, who want to destroy everything and turn the forest into rot. An eccentric human scientist believes in these creatures, but his singular obsession has left him without a wife and estranged from his daughter, M.K. (Amanda Seyfried). [Read more…]

Glee – Season 4 (Blu-ray)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Colfer, Cory Monteith, Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch
Director: Various
Running Time: 924 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 7th 2013

It’s all change in the world of Glee. Many of the main characters have graduated, so Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Rachel (Lea Michele) have headed off to New York, initially Finn (Cory Monteith) is in the army, while others have headed off to various other places.

That means there’s space for some new Glee Club kids at McKinley High, while a few of the old faces are still waiting to graduate. Meanwhile Will (Matthew Morrison) and Emma’s (Jayma Mays) relationship is at a crossroads and most shockingly of all for fans of Klaine, Kurt and Blaine’s (Darren Criss) love may not be able to withstand the distance between them! Much Ado About Nothing (2013) (DVD)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, Fran Kranz, Sean Maher, Nathan Fillion
Director: Joss Whedon
Running Time: 112 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 7th 2013

If you were in post-production on a movie that wasn’t just the biggest film of your career but one of the most ambitious franchise tie-ups ever attempted, you’d think you’d just concentrate on that. However while Joss Whedon was completing The Avengers, he also managed to find time to shoot a low-budget, black and white version of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, set in modern-day California. The man sure likes to work. [Read more…]

I Spit On Your Grave 2 (Blu-ray)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Jemma Dallender, Yavor Baharov, Joe Absolom, Aleksandar Aleksiev, Mary Stockley
Director: Steven R. Monroe
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: October 7th 2013

Talking about lazy titling. Rather than I Spit On Your Grave 2, couldn’t it have been I Piss On You Grave, I Take A Dump On Your Grave or I Leave The Rotting Corpses Of Dead Woodland Animals On You Grave? In fact it could have had a completely different title altogether, as except for having a similar premise, it’s not really linked to the first film (which itself was a remake of Meir Zarchi’s 1978 cult flick) at all. Breathe In (Blu-ray)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Amy Ryan, Mackenzie Davis
Director: Drake Doremus
Running Time: 96 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 7th 2013

I loved Drake Doremus’ Like Crazy, which managed the rare feat of making a love story feel fresh, real, new and passionate. I had high hope for Breathe In, but unfortunately while there are some things to admire, the overall feeling is that the film is slightly tedious and contrived.

Sophie (Felicity Jones) is a foreign exchange student who arrives in upstate New York to stay with Keith (Guy Pearce), his wife Megan (Amy Ryan) and daughter Lauren (Mackenzie Davis). Keith and Sophie share a love of music, and slowly their musical connection develop into feelings for one another, but neither is sure whether they should act upon them. [Read more…]

The Iceman (DVD)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, Ray Liotta, Winona Ryder, David Schwimmer
Director: Ariel Vromen
Running Time: 105 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 30th 2013

The Iceman is a textbook case of how to take a fascinating true story and make it far duller than it actually ought to be. It can’t quite decide whether it wants to ditch the facts and just be a rollicking story or stick close to the truth in order go deep into reality – and its indecision results in a film that doesn’t seem to know quite what it’s for, other than killing a lot of people. The Kick (DVD)

October 5, 2013 By Adrian Naik Leave a Comment

Starring: JeeJa Yanin, Jae-hyeon Jo, Petchtai Wongkamlao, Ye Ji-won
Director: Prachya Pinkaew
Running Time: 94 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 7th 2013

After foiling a robbery, a family of Tae Kwon Do athletes are forced to go into hiding. But when the youngest is kidnapped by the thieves, they are forced to commit the crime themselves to save him.

Some films can be challenging to watch. They could be simply too scary, require too much grey matter, or be so awful in every way you have to bring your own fun to the experience. No prizes for guessing where The Kick fits in. [Read more…]
