London Film Critics Circle Gives Breakthrough Award To Weekend’s Andrew Haigh

Although BAFTA should be hanging its head in shame for not even including Weekend on the longlist for any of its awards, the movie can take some solace from the fact the London Film Critics Circle has better taste, giving the film’s director, Andrew Haigh, the Breakthough British Film-maker award at its ceremony.

Weekend’s star, Tom Cullen, was nominated for Actor Of The Year, but lost out to Jean Dujardin in the night’s big winner, The Artist, which picked up three awards, getting Film Of The Year and Director Of The Year too. Weekend, about a one-night stand between two men that turns into something longer, may be getting shut out of the major awards, but those bodies with more discerning tastes are certainly giving the film its due.

Crush Of The Day: Emile Hirsch In The Darkest Hour

While I’d always known Emile Hirsch was a good looking guy, it was only when I saw the image above that I thought, ‘Yep, I’ll have me one of them!’ The 26-year-old is looking all kinds of hot as a slightly dirty, battle-weary survivor of an alien apocalypse in The Darkest Hour.

Haley Joel Osment Is Playing Gay In Sassy Pants

After The Sixth Sense, Haley Joel Osment had a brief time to shine with the likes of Pay It Forward and AI, but since then we haven’t heard much from him (other than a drink driving arrest a few years ago). He has been working fairly consistently in voice roles though, such as for Family Guy, The Jungle Book 2 and the Kingdom Hearts videogame series, and getting an education, but he certainly dropped out of the limelight.

However now the 23-year-old is back and playing gay in the indie movie Sassy Pants. The almost unrecognisable actor is playing Chip, the boy-toy boyfriend of the protagonist’s father. So if you ever fancied seeing Haley look rather camp and wearing Daisy Dukes (and if you did there’s something wrong with you, watch the trailer below.

Official Synopsis: Bethany Pruitt (Ashley Rickards) is valedictorian of her class – her one student homeschool class.  Stuck with younger brother SHAYNE (Martin Spanjers) under their perky but oppressive mother JUNE’s (Anna Gunn) thumb, Bethany’s only escape is a teen fashion ‘zine courtesy of her absentee gay dad.  She covets each edition, covertly restyling taboo fashions in her treasured scrapbook.

Bethany reluctantly succumbs to her mom’s post graduation mandate to get an accounting degree from an online university, but when she sneaks out with handsome neighbor HECTOR (Rene Rosado), Mom freaks out and retaliates by destroying her beloved scrapbook. Finally broken, Bethany catches the nearest Greyhound to her dad’s.

Life at dad DALE’s (Diedrich Bader) mobile home is no picnic either. Despite the close bond she forms with his fun, younger boyfriend, CHIP (Haley Joel Osmont), Dad’s self-loathing, alcoholic outbursts weigh heavy on Bethany.  She finds solace selling clothes at a cheap, trendy retail chain, Jail Bait, but her petty, cutthroat coworkers cause a new set of “real world” navigation problems.  When Bethany learns about Fashion Art Technology Institute, aka F.A.T.I., she sees a chance to break free once and for all and forge her own brighter future.  How she gets there will redefine her and her family and maybe even update her wardrobe.

Hugh Jackman Gives A Thumbs Up To Gay Marriage In Australia

There may have been a lot of rumours that Hugh Jackman is gay, which his wife recently described as ‘tragic’ (which was a bit of a stupid way to put it, but she wasn’t being wilfully homophobic), but that hasn’t stopped him supporting gay equality. The a-list star has now signed a pro-gay-marriage declaration from Australian Marriage Equality.

The declaration states, ‘Marriage should be about love and respect, not discrimination. Australia is at its best when we value equality over prejudice and fear. That’s why we support marriage equality for same-sex couples. Marriage equality will help remove discrimination against same-sex couples and their children. It will also benefit marriage by allowing it to embrace more loving committed couples who uphold its values. It’s time for Australia to join the other nations that have benefitted from this important reform.’

Along with Jackman, film critic David Stratton and Oscar winning costume designer Lizzy Gardiner signed the declaration. Australian Marriage Equality commented, ‘Hugh, David, and Lizzie are all happily married straight supporters of equality. They know how important marriage is to a couple and their families, and like most Australians they don’t feel same-sex couples should be denied the meaning and benefits of marriage.’

The fight for marriage equality is gearing up in Australia, with the ruling Labor party recently voting to support same sex marriage at their national conference. However Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who isn’t a supporter of gay marriage, has ensured any legislation would be subject to a free vote, making it more difficult to get it into law. However many expect a big push for equality in 2012, with a possible attempt to get a marriage equality law through parliament.

Support for the cause by other prominent Australians is expected to be announced by film director Stephan Elliot (Priscilla Queen Of The Desert) at an Equality Dinner next Wednesday.

Golden Globe Winners Announced – Christopher Plummer Wins For Beginners

If anyone was hoping that the Golden Globes would reveal a frontrunner for the Oscar, they’ll be disappointed, as that awards went pretty much across the board when they were handed out last night. The big winners were The Descendants for Best Picture (Drama) and The Artist for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy).

Although The Descendants has been a bit of a quiet success, there are many who feel it could do well at the Oscars and may win George Clooney a Best Actor award (as he got at the Globes on the Drama side).

On the LGBT side, the only film winner was Christopher Plummer, who picked up the Best Supporting Actor awards for playing an elderly gay man in Beginners. While Glenn Close was nominated for playing a woman living as a man in Albert Nobbs, she was beaten out by Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady in the Best Actress (Drama) category. In the TV categories, gay-friendly Modern Family did well, winning Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

Interestingly, while Best Director normally goes to someone who helmed one of the Best Picture winning films, in this case Martin Scorsese won for Hugo, which was that movie’s only award. It would be surprising if that patterns followed again at the Oscars. Other films to get at least one gong include Tintin, W.E., and A Separation. However overall it was The Artist that did best, with three awards, although it certainly didn’t sweep the boards and while it puts it in a strong position for the Academy Awards, it is by no means a cert.

Daniel Craig Gets Shirtless & Wet In First Official Skyfall Image

Skyfall doesn’t hit cinema screens until October 26th, but now the first official image has been released. It doesn’t really tell us much, other than at some point 007 is going to be getting his shirt off and going for a swim. At least we know Daniel Craig’s still hitting the gym. Let’s hope though there’s more to Skyfall than swimming.

The pic was taken recently during filming at the London Four Seasons hotel.

Oh my God, Michael Fassbender has a penis! Whoever would have thought it? The fact the actor’s little man makes a more than fleeting appearance in the Shame has received so much attention, you’d have thought everyone has assumed he was a Ken-doll down there before he proved otherwise. It’s a pattern that’s repeated over and over, as if an actress gets naked  it’s either barely mentioned or letched over, while male actors gets epithets like ‘brave’ and ‘bold’ thrown around. That’s not Fassbender’s fault, as he’s just doing his job and doing it well (and I’m sure there are some who’ll more than welcome little Fassbender’s appearance in the movie), but it would be nice if we could treat male and female genitals equally! Major Tatum, Pettyfer & Bomer Buffness Alert In New Magic Mike Stills

Male strippers are getting the Hollywood treatment in a big way this summer with Magic Mike, based on Channing Tatum’s experiences as a young man who took his clothes off for cash and directed by Steven Soderbergh. Now EW has debuted two new still from the movie, which should make gay men and straight women all kinds of happy.

The pic above features Channing Tatum and Matthew Bomer, while the one below has Tatum and Alex Pattyfer. The film stars Tatum as Mike, an experienced stripper who takes a young dancer called The Kid (Alex Pettyfer) under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money. Matthew McConaughey, plays a slightly older stripper who now owns his own club. It’s due out in June.

James Franco Set To Play Gay Artist Robert Mapplethorpe

James Franco needs to take a holiday or he’s going to burn himself out. It seems that every day there’s news of another project he’s linked to, and while many stars sign up for things and then drop out, Franco actually makes most of his. The lastest news is that he’s signed on to play controversial artist Robert Mapplethorpe in a new biopic, according to THR.

It’s another gay cultural icon for Franco, after Allen Ginsberg in Howl and Hart Crane in The Broken Tower. Mapplethorpe, who died of AIDS at the age of 42 in 1989, was extremely controversial as his photographs often depicted acts of bondage, sadomasochism, and gay sexuality. He was also known for taking photographs of celebrities, including Andy Warhol, Richard Gere, Grace Jones, Peter Gabriel and Patti Smith. Mapplethorpe’s work often raised questions about public funding of art and the line that separates art and obscenity.

The film will be mark narrative debut of documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner. Originally the movie was being set up to star Nate Dushku, brother of Eliza, who’ve been spearheading the project, however it seems it needed a little more star power to get made. So does this mean Franco will be recreating Mapplethorpe fames photograph of himself with a whip handle up his butt?

It’s not the only movie about Mapplethorpe in the works, as Patti Smith is working on an adaptation of her memoir, Just Kids, about her the artist’s friendship before either of them became famous. There’s no news on when either movie might get made.

Haywire – The First Five Minutes

I don’t know why more films don’t put the first five minutes online ahead of the release, as it’s a good way for people to be able to tell whether they want to see more (which is probably why a lot of rubbish movies don’t do it). Steven Soderbergh’s new film, Haywire, hits UK cinemas next Wednesday, and the opening has now popped up online, showing that it’s all action from the get-go! Here’s the synopsis: ‘Mallory Kane (newcomer Gina Carano) is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who knew her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive.’ The movie also stars Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas and Channing Tatum.
