Shirley Maclaine Talks Director’s ‘Trepidations’ About Lesbian Themes In 1961’s The Children’s Hour

March 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

childrens-hour-slideHollywood has a long history of removing the gay themes from movie adaptations of books and films, particularly in the past. The Children’s Hour is a good case in point, as when Lillian Hellman’s play became the film These Three in 1936 any hint at lesbianism was removed, and while it was almost there in the 1961 version with Shirley Maclaine an Audrey Hepburn, it was very much hidden under the surface.

Now Maclaine has been talking about the issues the film faced at the TCM Classic Movie Festival. Gay Star News reports that she comment that director William Wyler, “Had trepidations about the subject matter – it was 1961 and nobody had done that.”

Indeed she suggests he cut out any scene that hinted at intimacy between the women, saying “Scenes of brushing each others hair or ironing clothes – he cut some of them out and in doing so I think pared the picture down a little bit.”

The movie is about two female teachers at an exclusive school, whose lives are shattered when a rumour starts to spread about them, started by one of the children. While the 1961 movie does suggest that the rumour is they are lovers, it never properly says that, and also makes clear that nothing has happened (although Maclaine does her best to hint her character would like there to be something going on). In These Three things don’t even get that far, with the suggestion being that one has slept with the other’s fiance, while in Hellman’s original play it’s strongly suggested that the two women did indeed have a relationship.

However Maclaine says that it would have been very difficult to do anything else in 1961, as “That kind of same-(sex) love was not tolerated” .

The D Train Trailer – Jack Black & James Marsden have sex (but let’s not mention it)

March 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

D-Train-jack-black-james-marsdenThe D Train got a decent but mixed reaction on its Sundance premiere, but ignited quite a lot of comment over a sex scene between James Marsden’s bisexual Oliver and Jack Black’s ostensibly straight Dan. Now the trailer has arrived, which lets us know something happened between them, while fudging the issue of exactly what.

In fact it makes the whole trailer a bit of odd, as Black seems shellshocked about what happened in LA, but all we see is him having a good time. But hey, it’s Hollywood law that if you can hide the gay in the marketing, you do, so we don’t actually get to really see what going on and once more Hollywood can say one thing about LGBT visibility and do another.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘All his life, Dan Landsman (Jack Black) has never been the cool guy. That’s about to change – if he can convince Oliver Lawless (Marsden), the most popular guy from his high school who’s now the face of a national Banana Boat ad campaign, to show up with him to their class reunion. A man on a mission, Dan travels from Pittsburgh to LA and spins a web of lies to recruit Lawless. But he gets more than he bargains for as the unpredictable Lawless proceeds to take over his home, career, and entire life. Showcasing Jack Black and James Marden’s most outrageous performances to date, THE D TRAIN serves up the question: how far would you go to be popular? Co-starring Kathryn Hahn and Jeffrey Tambor.’

A May 8th US release is set. [Read more…]

Disney Plans Mulan Live-Action Movie

March 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mulan-slideDisney seems determine to work its way through every animated movie it’s ever made and turn it into a live-action movie. They’ve done it with the likes of Cinderella, Alice In Wonderland and Maleficent, and they’ve got The Jungle Book, Dumbo and Beauty & The Beast in the works.

And now they’ve added another, as THR reports that Disney has just picked up a script about Mulan by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek, which centres on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, the female warrior who was the main character in Disney’s 1998 animated film.

There aren’t any more details than that, but the fact that Disney picked up a spec script suggests it won’t be straight adaptation of the 1998 movie, and may stay closer to the original legends.

It’s a smart move on Disney’s part, as all of Hollywood is chasing after the money that can be made in the fast-growing Chinese market, and with Mulan it has something with in-built Asian appear but it also known to Western audiences too.

Mulan is about a young woman who disguises herself as a man in order to join the military in the place of her conscripted elderly father. Pretending to be a man she becomes a hero, but inevitably her secret can’t stay hidden forever.

Chance (BFI Flare Review)

March 30, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Clifford Hume, Abs, Lewis Hancox
Director: Jake Graf
Certificate: NR
Release Date: NA

Shown as part of the Fragile Things grouping of short films at BFI Flare this year, Chance is the story of an unlikely love that develops between two very lovely differently-heartbroken individuals.

Clifford Hume’s portrayal of a man lost in a deep depression after the death of his wife is touching and absolutely spot-on: His daily struggles are shown in a tender yet unflinching light and Chance‘s minimal dialogue serves to underscore those feelings of hopelessness and isolation. Tight close-ups and beautifully framed wide shots in a park underline masterfully the loneliness and, later, the growing companionship the main characters find in one another. [Read more…]

Fragile Things Short Films (BFI Flare Review)

Curtains
Dir. Nathan Evans
Curtains is the warts-and-all story of an unlikely love triangle between two gay men and a lesbian. Very touching and authentic, this is a really well-portrayed short story that raises questions about the nature of fidelity, sex and relationships. While there are no weak links in the cast, Dave Kelley gives an outstanding performance in the central role. [Read more…]

The View From Here Short Films (BFI Flare Review)

Certificate: NR
Release Date: NA

The View From Here – a collection of short films centring on coming out and the emotional minefields associated with such a life-changing action.

An Afternoon (En Apftermiddag)
Dir. Soren Green
A very sweet yet tense coming-out story involving two young friends. With communication restricted mostly to lingering looks, semi-articulate teenage grunts and text messages, this feels convincingly teenage, with the boys seemingly authentically struggling with feelings they’re not entirely confident about and have no idea how to express. A contemporary story told deftly and convincingly by everyone involved. [Read more…]

Brokeback Mountain The Opera (DVD Review)

March 30, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Daniel Okulitch, Tom Randle, Heather Buck, Hannah Esther Minutillo
Director: Jeremie Cuvillier
Running Time: 130 mins
Certificate: E
Release Date: March 16th 2015 (UK)

Yes, there really is a Brokeback Mountain The Opera. It’s not a satire like Jerry Springer The Opera; it’s a proper, legit opera, and even has a libretto by the creator of the original short story it’s based on, Annie Proulx. It was originally written to be performed by the New York City Opera’s programme that creates new works around ideas and stories that are familiar to a younger, less elite audience. However when General Director Gerard Mortier moved from New York to the Teatro Real in Madrid, he took the piece with him.

It is initially an odd mix. Watching big, tough burly cowboys singing in a singularly operatic fashion takes some getting used to. I’m sure you’re familiar with the story though. Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar meet when they are hired to look after sheep one summer on Brokeback Mountain. Initially Jack finds it difficult to connect with the quiet and somewhat taciturn Ennis, but soon they bond and embark on an intense love affair. [Read more…]

Out To Win (BFI Flare Review)

March 29, 2015 By Scott Elliott Leave a Comment

Starring: Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Jason Collins, John Amaechi
Director: Malcolm Ingram
Certificate: NR
Release Date: NA

Out To Win is an interesting and intimate documentary of LGBT sporting history over the past 40 years.

Beginning as a retrospective, Out To Win looks at how attitudes and conceptions of gay sports stars has changed since 1975 when David Kopay came out as the first professional gay NFL player. Featuring interviews with several now-retired athletes including Kopay, Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King, all of whom have lived through scandal and prejudice and had their careers damaged as a result of their sexuality being made public.

In the telling of their now historical comings-out, these elder statesmen and women of gay sports are able to tell their stories in a non-sensationalised context, allowing them to discuss openly and honestly how things have changed since their (often forced) exposure and the work they’ve done to ease the process for younger athletes who’ve found themselves in similar situations.
