Eating Out Director Q. Allan Brocka Takes On People You Know Gay Web Series

March 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

q-allan-brockaOver the last few years Q. Allan Brocka has been a bit of a one-man LGBT film industry with the likes of Rick & Steve The Happiest Gay Couple In All The World, the award-winning Boy Culture and the popular Eating Out series of rom-coms.

Now though he’s heading online to direct upcoming episodes of the web series People You Know. Season One, Part One of the show has been online for a while, but now Brocka has signed on to direct Season One, Part Two of the gay dramedy. Created by Baltimore Russell and John Dylan DeLaTorre, People you Know is described as ‘a provocative series where the seven deadly sins corrupt a group of thirty-something urbanites, threatening their chance for happiness and love, as they strive to achieve their dreams while surviving the drama. At every turn, these friends get pushed to the limit and run the risk of losing all they hold dear.’

“I’m excited to be a part of People you Know. I love the serialized aspect of the show and can’t wait to get on set with all the actors and really amp up the drama,” Allan says about joining the series. “The character’s storylines are seamlessly interwoven with each other allowing me the opportunity to really play up the dramatic tension throughout the series.”

Season 1, Part 2 will begin filming in June for seven new episodes. It’s currently slated for release Winter 2015. You can take take a look at a promo for the pilot episode below. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: You’re Cute For A Black Guy – The short doc shines a light on being black and gay

March 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

you're-cute-for-a-black-guyWhile we might not like to think that prejudice exists within the gay community, the fact is that it does, and when it comes to race some of us can be as dumb and ignorant as straight people can – indeed some might suggest moreso, considering the number of ‘No Blacks’, and ‘No Asians’ statements openly included on Grindr profiles.

Filmmaker Cameron Johnson has decided to shine a light on this, highlighting what black gay men have been told by white gay men, which ranges from the bizarre to the stereotypical to the just plain racist.

Johnson told Huffington Post, “I made this piece because I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t crazy. I couldn’t be the only gay black man who white dates have said insane things to, so I ventured to find others who shared my experiences. What I discovered is that my story isn’t uncommon, it’s just untold… I hope that my work will help to broaden the discussions of what it looks like to be a gay man in 2015, and give people insight into worlds they haven’t understood. Also, seriously never say any of these things to black men again.”

Take a look at short documentary below.

Three In A Bed (DVD Review)

March 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Brennan Reece, Darren Bransford, Jody Latham
Director: Lloyd Eyre-Morgan
Running Time: 81 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 23rd 2015 (UK)

Nate is a young man whose life has slightly stalled. On her deathbed his mother made him promise to look after his two sisters, something he took to heart so much that he doesn’t have much going on of his own. It doesn’t help that his sisters are loud, gobby and good at getting into trouble.

But then he meets Jonny, who lives downstairs and seems keen to make friends. They certainly share an attraction, but Nate isn’t sure what his sexuality is, and his life suddenly becomes more complicated when his sisters – who are certain he’s straight – announce that because of the various issues in their lives, they’re coming to stay with him. Nate flirts around the idea of starting something up with Jonny, although Jonny isn’t keen on the idea of having to keep the whole thing in the closet. [Read more…]

Paddington (Blu-ray Review)

March 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Hugh Bonneville, Ben Whishaw, Sally Hawkins, Nicole Kidman
Director: Paul King
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 23rd 2015

Paddington is proof, if it were needed, that in a world where filmmakers constantly seem to think they need to make their family films cool and hip, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel if you’re going to do it right.

I have to admit I was dubious about this take on Michael Bond’s classic children’s character, as after seeing the first image of the bear’s new live-action/CGI incarnation, he just didn’t look quite right to me. However after only a couple of minutes of the movie starting, I have to admit I was rather enchanted. [Read more…]

Russell Tovey Says He Only Touches Straight Men’s Balls If a Script Tells Him To (Sort Of)

March 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

russell-toveyGood old Russell Tovey, he’s got a good moral code where he doesn’t believe in touching straight men’s balls unless a script tells him he should. Not really, or at least we presume he had his tongue somewhat in his cheek in a recent chat with Heat magazine.

He says of doing sex scenes with another guy, “It’s easier doing those scenes with another gay man than it is a straight man, the same way I feel fine doing sex scenes with a woman.

“When I’m doing a sex scene with an actor who is straight, I feel a huge sense of responsibility not to feel like I’m taking advantage or anything. Like, I’ll only touch their balls if it says so in the script.”

He’s also well aware that in the modern age, if you’re going to take your shirt off or get nude on screen, there are plenty of people out there who will screenshot it, post it online and analyse every frame, and understandably Russell wants to ensure that he looks as good as he can.

He says of preparing for his sexy scenes in Looking, “I keep the bush low, trim the chest hair and I like to get the nipples more erect, so I’ll tweak them a bit too. Erect nipples add so much to a scene I think.

“I do worry about how I’m going to look in screen-grabs and GIFS. You know it’s going to happen.”

He’s certainly got a decent sense of humour even if he leaves you wondering how serious he might be being.

You can check out a fun vid taken during his Heat photoshoot below. [Read more…]

The Skeleton Twins (DVD Review)

March 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Luke Wilson, Ty Burrell, Boyd Holbrook
Director: Craig Johnson
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 16th 2015 (UK)

With SNL alumni Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader in the lead roles, you could be forgiven for thinking this would be a riotous gross-out laugh-fest, but right from the first few scenes The Skeleton Twins sets itself to be something far more indie dramedy.

Hader and Wiig are twins Milo and Maggie who aren’t completely estranged but have severely drifted apart after he left for LA to become an actor. Things aren’t going to well though, as the movie opens with Maggie narrowly escaping death and Milo attempting suicide. He heads back to their hometown to stay with Maggie and try to start over, but they soon discover that reuniting isn’t easy and that neither of them is in a place in their lives where they feel they should be.
