Harold And Maude (Blu-ray Review)

July 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Bud Cort, Ruth Gordon, Vivian Pickles, Cyril Cusack
Director: Hal Ashby
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 14th 2014 (UK)

Harold and Maude can be a tough sell. Despite saying to people that it’s a small masterpiece that’s amongst the best American movies ever made, the moment you mention that it’s a full-on love story between a teenager and a 79-year-old woman you can see the horror start to mount in people’s eyes, especially when you confirm we’re not talking purely about platonic love.

Now it’s arrived on Blu-ray, and I can only hope the release convinces a few more people to indulge in its quirky and yet often profound delights. [Read more…]

Daniel Radcliffe’s Horns Gets Its First Teaser Poster

July 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Horns-Teaser-PosterThey seem to like waiting a long time to release Daniel Radcliffe movies. What If? is due to arrive this summer, over 18 months after it was filmed. He made Horns meanwhile back in the autumn of 2012, and while it’s played at festivals it’s only now that the first UK teaser poster has arrived.

What the poster doesn’t show is that in the film, Radcliffe’s character literally has horns growing out of his head.

We still have a little while to wait though until we can see it, as its British release isn’t until Friday 31 October, 2014.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From master-of-horror Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D) comes this supernatural, offbeat thriller starring beloved British actor Danielle Radcliffe (Harry Potter, Kill Your Darlings) and the talented Juno Temple (Magic Magic, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For).

‘Ig Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe) is accused for the violent rape and killing of his girlfriend, Merrin Williams (Juno Temple). After a hard night of drinking, Ig awakens, hungover, to find horns growing out of his head; they have the ability to drive people to confess sins and give in to selfish impulses. Ig decides to use this effective tool to discover the circumstances of his girlfriend’s death and to seek revenge by finding the true murderer.

‘Daniel and Juno lead an all-star cast with strong support from David Morse (The Green Mile, The Hurt Locker) and Heather Graham (The Hangover I&II, Boogie Nights).

‘HORNS is based on the dark fantasy novel of the same name from New York Times best-selling author Joe Hill (Heart Shaped Box) with a screenplay by Keith Burnin. Alexandre Aja, Riza Aziz, Joey McFarland and Cathy Schulman produce.’

Mike Buonaiuto’s #Credence Short Film Wants To Challenge LGBT Portrayals In Sci-fi & It Needs Your Help

July 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

credence-short-filmFilmmaker Mike Buonaiuto has had huge success with gay-themed viral vids, such as the gay marriage themed Homecoming, as well as #LoveAlwaysWins that challenged the anti-gay policies in Russia, and Invisible Parents, which was made to raise awareness of the inequalities facing gay parents throughout the EU. He’s also shown his interest in sci-fi with things such as the short film, Adam: Next Generation Robotics.

Now he’s hoping to challenge the way gay people are dealt with in sci-fi with the short film #Credence and he’s turned to IndieGoGo to raise the £6,000 he needs to get it made and onto the big screen. The hope is rather than dealing with gay themes allegorically – which sci-fi often does when it touches on LGBT things at all – it will tackle it head on with a story of a gay family dealing with the end of the world as we know it.

You can watch the beautiful looking trailer for the film and a behind-scenes-featurette below.

The film, ‘tells the story of a family torn apart during the last evacuation on earth after violent storms have made survival impossible. Hope has been found in the form of new worlds that support human life, however due to limited rocket capacity and life expectancy only children are permitted to evacuate, and even then – only the rich have ended up getting tickets. Our short film follows 2 fathers’ decision to make the ultimate sacrifice to give up all their possessions to ensure the survival of their daughter, and the entire human race.’

As always, there are plenty of perks for those who help with the funding, so head over to IndieGoGo to find out more. [Read more…]

Craig Boreham’s Gay-Themed Film Teenage Kicks Starts Production, With Miles Szanto Starring

July 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

teenage-kicksThere are a lot of gay-themed projects out there looking for funding, so when we cover one it’s great to here that it’s got the cash it needs and is moving forward. Just over a year ago Teenage Kicks was looking for money, and now we’ve had word that the movie has gone into production.

Teenage Kicks is the feature version of the successful short Drowning, which screened around the world at film festival and featured on the short film collection, Boys On Film 6: Pacific Rim. It’s take a few years to get it from short to movie, but it will now shoort over the next five weeks in Sydney’s Inner West and south-eastern suburbs.

Drowning’s writer/director, Craig Boreham, is once more at the helm, and one of the short’s stars, Miles Szanto is set to reprise his role. Since starring in Drowning, Szanto has gone onto plenty of success, including scoring the lead role in the LGBT-themed film, Bruno & Earlene Go to Vegas. Another of Drowning’s stars, Xavier Samuel, has also gone into great things, such as appearing in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Adores. He won’t return for Teenage Kicks, but Daniel Webber (The Combination, K9, Sleeping Beauty), Charlotte Best (Home and Away, Puberty Blues), Shari Sebbans (The Sapphires, Redfern Now), Ian Roberts (Little Fish, Superman Returns, Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities) and Anni Finsterer (The Boys are Back, Sleeping Beauty, Prime Mover, Accidents Happen) are all onboard.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the final moments of his seventeenth year, Miklós Varga’s (Szanto) world has come crumbling down. His plans to run away and escape the hold of his migrant family have been brutally undone by family disaster. Only Mik knows the events that led to this tragedy and as far as he can see there is only one person to blame: himself.

Mik is suddenly torn between his desire to head north and start a new life with his best friend Dan, and the obligation to his broken family. Can he fill the shoes of his adored sibling or is he toxic, destined to bring ruin upon everyone he loves?

“We are really exploring that ‘in-between’ phase that we all go through. That cusp moment between teen and adult when the world can turn on its head every single day and you are still trying to find where you fit in the scheme of things,” says Craig Boreham. “Teenage Kicks is an in-your-face, raw look at that time and the issues and struggles these young characters go through when they come crashing toward adulthood. It’s an evocative, sexually charged story that I think most people can relate to.”

Barba Rija (Rough Beard) Web Series Trailer – Portguese gay bears are getting their own show

July 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

barba-rijas-rough-beard-slideAugust is going to be a good months for lovers of big hairy gay men. As we reported a few days ago, Season 3 of the popular Where The Bears Are is due to start, and now Portugal is getting in on the action with its first gay bear web series, Barba Rija (Rough Beard).

You can watch the trailer for the show below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘It follows the lives of three gay friends who are bears but have a soft heart. António, Pedro and Ursão (Big Bear) live in Lisbon. They work, go out at night and get in romantic adventures. Pedro ended up with his boyfriend and is the group´s lovebird. António is the most rational of the three and has a secret passion. Finally, Big Bear is the strongest, but also the sweetest, who will be surprised with a change in his life. It might look like a soap opera but it´s comedy at its best. The three are the symbol of fellowship, of various types of masculinity, affections, concerns and expectations that belong to all human beings. André Murraças, the author (writer and director), is a published author who writes also for theatre and tv and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy.

‘It was originally thought as a 13 episodes project for which we managed a good amount on advertising (bars, clubs, brands), but not enough for the whole series. So we decided to take a step back and do one episode through crowdfunding. The crowdfunding was a success, we got even more money than expected and we were able to do 7 episodes of 5 minutes approx.

You can follow the show when it starts in August on its Youtube channel. [Read more…]

Eroddity(s) (DVD Review)

July 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Cory Tyndall, Addison Graham, Edward Gutierrez
Director: Steven Vasquez
Running Time: 67 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: July 14th 2014 (UK)

Back in the dim and distant past there was an entire subgenre of straight-to-video movies (yes, video, I told you this was a long time ago) that had a plot but were filled with softcore sex. The main reason they existed seemed to be so that people who would be too embarrassed to buy an actual porn film could get something sexy without feeling too embarrassed to take it to the shop counter.

I couldn’t help thinking of that sort of movie when watching Eroddity(s), which presents four (well, three and a half) short stories that are linked by their horror feel and the fact the young men in them are unable to keep their clothes on for more than 30 seconds at a time. They’re also linked by the fact that no one in the movie is going to be winning an Oscar anytime soon, but as many of the actors are drawn from the world of twink porn, expecting to find a Meryl Streep amongst them is asking a bit much. July 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Futuro-beachSet to screen during the Newfest New York LGBT film festival later this month, the gay-themed Futuro Beach (Praia do Futuro) looks like it’ll be worth a watch when it reaches wider audiences (in the US it will be distributed by Strand Releasing).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When Brazilian lifeguard Donato fails to save a swimmer from drowning, he seeks out the victim’s friend Konrad, a handsome German biker. The two men begin a passionate affair, and Donato soon decides to follow Konrad to Berlin.

‘Years later, their seemingly peaceful life is threatened by a visitor from Donato’s past. Director Karim Aïnouz (Madame Satã) delivers a visually stunning, emotionally resonant tale about three men struggling across oceans of love, loss, and heartache. A Strand Releasing release.’

Undress Me Short Film – What Happens When 20 Strangers Are Asked To Take Each Others’ Clothes Off?

July 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

undress-slideJust over a year ago the short film, First Kiss, went massively viral with its simple premise of asking strangers to get in front of the camera and kiss for the first time. Now a follow up is here, and this time they’re going a little further than kissing, as 20 people who’ve never met before are asked to take each other’s clothes off, all while being filmed.

And as you’d hope, there are both same sex and mixed sex couplings.

There’s a fair amount of embarrassment, fumbling and people being unable to get the other person’s clothing unclasped properly, all before they slip into bed, with some getting closer there than others.

Tatia Pileva directs the film which is actually a promotion for the second season of Masters Of Sex (which does make us wonder if the film is as candid this time around as the first one was).

Take a look below. [Read more…]

Unbroken Trailer – Director Angelina Jolie delves into the life of Louie Zamperini

July 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

unbroken-slideThere’s been a lot of interest in Angelina Jolie’s second directorial outing, Unbroken. Last week came the sad news that the subject of the film, Louie Zamperini, had died. Now we can get a good taste of the film about him, as a full trailer has been released.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award® winner Angelina Jolie directs and produces Unbroken, an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.

‘Director Jolie began shooting some of the most dramatic and challenging scenes on Wednesday, October 16, on location far out at sea in Moreton Bay, Australia, with Zamperini (O’Connell) and his fellow airmen—Phil (Domhnall Gleeson) and Mac (Finn Wittrock)—having impossibly survived being adrift in the open Pacific for several weeks.

‘Working with cameras on a floating rig in choppy waters and braving the elements, with actors dieting for months to appear as depleted as their characters, Jolie completed a successful first day of a location shoot that promises to be rigorous and uniquely challenging.

‘Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand’s (“Seabiscuit: An American Legend”) enormously popular book, Unbroken brings to the big screen Zamperini’s unbelievable and inspiring true story about the resilient power of the human spirit. Starring alongside O’Connell, Gleeson and Wittrock are Garrett Hedlund and John Magaro as fellow POWs who find an unexpected camaraderie during their internment, Alex Russell as Zamperini’s brother, Pete, and in his English-language feature debut, Japanese actor Miyavi as the brutal camp guard known only to the men as “The Bird.”’

The film will hit cinemas in December. [Read more…]

The Captive Trailer – Ryan Reynolds needs to find his missing daughter

captive-2014-slideThe Captive had a mixed reaction on its Cannes debut, despite the presence of acclaimed director Atom Egoyan and star Ryan Reynolds. However we’ll all be able to decide for ourselves when it’s released later this year.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Eight years after the disappearance of Cassandra, some disturbing indications seem to indicate that she’s still alive. Police, parents and Cassandra herself, will try to unravel the mystery of her disappearance.’

Reynolds is Cassandra’s father, who feels particularly guilty as she was taken from his car. Rosario Dawson meanwhile is the investigator attempting to unravel the crime. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]
