Just For Fun: David Beckham Wearing His New Underpants

January 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems almost unfair that someone who gets paid so much to kick a ball around should also get paid to wear underpants, but David Beckham does. However he’s moved from packing his bulge into Armani briefs to being a bit more ‘man of the people’ with H&M, having helped create a new line of undies for them.

The 36yo has certainly still got what it takes, so lets hope for many more year of him picking up massive amounts of money to barely hide little Beckham.

First Photo Of Amazing Spider-man’s Lizard?

January 3, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

We may have got our first photo of Amazing Spider-man bad guy, Lizard (played by Rhys Ifans), but it’s come from a slightly unusual source. Images have popped up on line of tie-in toys, which include what appears to be the first photo we’ve seen of the Lizard (which you can see above). The other toy, which is below, seems to confirm a rumour that the film would include a SWAT team of half-man/half-lizrd creatures.

The movie’s out July 4th.

Ghost Protocol Top New Year’s US Box Office

January 3, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

If the studios were hoping for some four-day holiday New Year’s cheer at the box office, they didn’t get a huge amount, with Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol the only real bright spot. The overall box office was down over last New Year, but Ghost Protocol added another $38 million to take its total to $14 million in the US and $361 million worldwide. It’s a decent hit but not astounding.

There were no new entries, with just a few films shifting about. Among the Christmas openers, War Horse is doing best, moving up from sixth to fourth place on the chart (and it should be noted its sixth place finish last weekend was after only two days in cinemas). Other films such as Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and We Bought A Zoo continued to do modest but not horrific business.

It’s Tintin though that’s be the biggest failure, only making $50 million so far in the US, despite finding success in other parts of the world.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 30th-January 2nd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol $38.3 $141.2
2 Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows $26.5 $136.5
3 Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked $21.0 $97.3
4 The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo $19.2 $45.2
5 War Horse $19.0 $60.0
6 We Bought A Zoo $16.5 $43.9
7 The Adventures Of Tintin $15.0 $50.8
8 New Year’s Eve $7.7 $47.3
9 The Darkest Hour $5.2 $14.2
10 The Descendants $4.2 $40.2

Has Ralph Fiennes’ Skyfall Character Been Revealed?

January 3, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

At the Skyfall press conference a couple of months ago, director Sam Mendes refused to say who some of the actors in the movie would be playing, suggesting that to do so would be a bit of a spoiler.

One of those mysterious roles is who Ralph Fiennes is playing, but now Movieweb suggests they’ve got a well placed source at the studio who’s let it slip. So if you don’t want to know, stop reading now.

Fiennes recently said in an interview he’d be playing a government agent, and now Movieweb’s source says, “Ralph Fiennes play’s a government agent, which we never get a name on, because he is set to play the new M. Skyfall centers around M (Judi Dench) where her past forces her to leave as head of MI6, and find a new M. The board of MI6 then turns to a government agent (Ralph Fiennes) to take over. M (Dame Judi) is now forced to train the new head of MI6.”

At the moment this should be treated as rumour, but Movieweb’s stick by its source.

Summer Storm

January 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Robert Stadloer, Kostja Ullman, Jurgen Tonkel, Miriam Morgenstern
Director: Marco Kreuzpainter
Running Time: 94 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 14th, 2005

Summer Storm (or to give it its proper German title, Sommersturm) is a Teutonic addition to the ever-expanding gay movie subgenre of coming out flicks. It’s little surprise it’s such a popular subject, as coming out in one way or another is one of the few things nearly always gay people share and which becomes a pivotal moment in their lives.

Teenagers Tobi and Achim are best friends who are heading off for a summer camp with their rowing team, ahead of a big competition. The boys are extremely close, even going as far as to wank off together, and believe nothing could ever come between them. [Read more…]

Shock To The System

Starring: Chad Allen, Sebastian Spence, Michael Woods, Morgan Fairchild
Director: Ron Oliver
Running Time: 87 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 24th, 2008

The second of four Donald Strachey movies starring Chad Allen (following Third Man Out) sees the gay actor back as the gay detective, this time delving into the exceedingly dodgy world of ex-gay therapy. Strachey is hired by a young man, Paul Hale, who almost immediately afterwards turns up dead, after apparently killing himself. While Donald isn’t sure exactly why he was hired, he starts to investigate the death, which leads him to the door of the Phoenix Foundation and its director Dr. Trevor Cornell, who practices controversial techniques that attempt to turn gay people straight. The Artist (Cinema)

December 29, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jean DuJardin, Berenice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell
Director: Michel Hazanavicius
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: Dec 30th (London), Jan 6th (Nationwide)

I don’t know why people are saying The Artist should win at the Oscars. It’s obvious director Michel Hazanavicius doesn’t know how to make a movie. For a start, he made the film in black and white. Doesn’t he know the world got coloured in during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s? Plus, he’s so incompetent he forgot to record the dialogue, so he just plays some music and occasionally has a caption card come up on screen, as if that’s a sensible way of telling a story.

He doesn’t even manage to make it in the right aspect ratio, as it’s the same width-to-length as old style-TVs. Hell, it’s not even in 3D! Hazanavicius needs to go back to square one, watch some Michael Bay movies and learn how to make real, proper films with explosions and stuff. This is the 21st Century! [Read more…]

New Oscars Poster Is Unveiled

December 29, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

You’d think that as the Oscars is all about celebrating the best movies of the year, the poster for the event would celebrate the modern. However the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is harking back to Oscar winners past on the poster for the 84th ceremony, which takes place on Ferbruary 26th, 2012.

The image includes pics from the last eight decades of cinema, including Gone with the Wind” (1939), Casablanca (1943), Giant (1956), The Sound of Music (1965), The Godfather (1972), Driving Miss Daisy (1989), Forrest Gump (1994) and Gladiator (2000). All thsoe films won the Academy Award for Best Picture, except Giant, which won George Stevens the Oscar for Directing.

Apparently ‘the design is meant to evoke the emotional connections we all have with the movies’. Hmm, okay, not sure about that, but it’ll do!

The Paperboy Poster – Zac Efron Goes Retro

December 29, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Despite the success of Precious, it was surprisingly tough for Lee Daniels to get a follow-up off the ground. However after several false starts he’s filmed The Paperboy, which features a pretty good cast including Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman and John Cusack.

Now TheFilmStage has debuted the first US poster for the movie, which takes things retro for the upcoming movie. The film is about a directionless young man (Efron) who helps his reporter brother (McConaughey) investigate the possible wrongful conviction of a man on death row, and in the process, falls for the woman whom the convict has been romancing through prison correspondence.

Robin Williams Claims He Has A Gay Dog

December 28, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Critically acclaimed Hollywood actor Robin Williams has said he is the proud owner of a gay dog.

The 60-year-old star, who currently appears in Happy Feet 2, lives on the outskirts of San Francisco with his wife and their pets.

In a recent interview with Contact Music he said: “I’ve done the ranch thing, now I’m doing the water thing where I go kayaking and paddleboarding and take to the woods for hours on my bike. It’s my thinking time and very therapeutic.

“I also have a gay rescue pug called Leonard, who I take for walks because I am very secure in my sexuality. He has a boyfriend and they are planning to adopt a Siamese kitten together. We’re very modern.”

Silence Of The Lambs Added To US National Film Registry

December 28, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Every year the US Library of Congress picks 25 films to join its National Film Registry, which it believes are culturally and artistically important enough to be specially archived for posterity, with the idea being that even if the rest of the world blew up, at least these movies would survive (or something like that anyway).

Each year the list tends to be a mix of populist entertainment and more unusual offerings that have been judged to have particular cultural importance and are therefore worth protecting. The 25 movies picked for this year have now been announced, and it’s a suitably eclectic mix.

Movies chosen include modern Best Picture winners The Silence Of The Lambs (which has been included despite its depiction of a transgender person still being controversial) and Forrest Gump, but also stretch back into the silent era with The Cry Of The Children, A Cure For Pokeritis and Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid. One of the more unusual inclusions is the Nicholas Brothers Family Home Movies, which were shot in the 1930s and 1940s. These were judged worthy of inclusion because Fayard and Harold Nicholas not only made a rare document of African-American middle class life during that period, but as they were renowned dancers, their footage also covers Broadway and Hollywood during that period, including the only known footage of shows such as Babes In Arms.

Take a look below for the full list:
Allures (1961)
Bambi (1942)
The Big Heat (1953)
A Computer Animated Hand (1972)
Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment (1963)
The Cry of the Children (1912)
A Cure for Pokeritis (1912)
El Mariachi (1992)
Faces (1968)
Fake Fruit Factory (1986)
Forrest Gump (1994)
Growing Up Female (1971)
Hester Street (1975)
I, An Actress (1977)
The Iron Horse (1924)
The Kid (1921)
The Lost Weekend (1945)
The Negro Soldier (1944)
Nicholas Brothers Family Home Movies (1930s-40s)
Norma Rae (1979)
Porgy and Bess (1959)
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Stand and Deliver (1988)
Twentieth Century (1934)
