Daddy (DVD Review)

May 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Gerald McCullouch, Dan Via, Jaime Cepero, Tamlyn Tomita, John Rubinstein
Director: Gerald McCullouch
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 9th 2016 (UK)

Gerald McCullouch is best known to many as Roger in the BearCity movies (although some will remember him as lab tech Bobby in CSI, or in various appearances in other popular TV shows), but here he turns director, as well as taking the lead role. Initially you might think his Colin in Daddy isn’t too far from Roger, as he’s a gay man in a relationship with a much younger guy, but it’s there that the comparisons end.

Colin is a good-looking middle-aged man who has little difficulty picking up younger guys. He’s also got a great job in TV and a devoted best friend, Stew (Dan Via), although he’s starting to think perhaps he’s missing out due to his lack of a long-term relationship. Then into his life comes young intern Tee (Jaime Cepero), who seems incredibly excited to be working alongside Colin. [Read more…]

Creed (Blu-ray Review)

May 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, Tony Bellew
Director: Ryan Coogler
Running Time: 133 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: May 16th 2016 (UK)

A few years ago, pretty much everyone thought the Rocky franchise was dead, and that any attempt to resurrect it would be a pointless, awful cash-in. However, 2006’s Rocky Balboa proved there might be a little life left, and now Creed is cashing in on that promise.

Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) is the illegitimate offspring of Apollo Creed, who’s been trapped in foster homes and juvenile detention until he’s given a chance by Apollo’s widow (Phylicia Rashad), who decides to take him in. She also points him towards someone else from her husband’s past, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), who reluctantly agrees to help train the young man and turn him into a boxer. [Read more…]

Little Men Trailer – Take a look at the latest from the director of Keep The Lights On & Love Is Strange

May 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

little-menFor the past few years, Ira Sachs has been giving us gay-themed treats such as Keep The Lights On and Love Is Strange. Now he’s moved sideways from the gay arena for a tale of teen friendship with Little Men, a movie that got incredibly good reviews at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When 13-year-old Jake’s (Theo Taplitz) grandfather dies, his family moves from Manhattan back into his father’s old Brooklyn home. There, Jake befriends the charismatic Tony (Michael Barbieri), whose single mother Leonor (Paulina Garcia, Gloria), a dressmaker from Chile, runs the shop downstairs. Soon, Jake’s parents Brian (Greg Kinnear) and Kathy (Jennifer Ehle) — one, a struggling actor, the other, a psychotherapist — ask Leonor to sign a new, steeper lease on her store. For Leonor, the proposed new rent is untenable, and a feud ignites between the adults.

‘At first, Jake and Tony don’t seem to notice; the two boys, so different on the surface, begin to develop a formative kinship as they discover the pleasures of being young in Brooklyn. Jake aspires to be an artist, while Tony wants to be an actor, and they have dreams of going to the same prestigious arts high school together. But the children can’t avoid the problems of their parents forever, and soon enough, the adult conflict intrudes upon the borders of their friendship.’

The film will be in US cinemas in August. [Read more…]

The Accountant Trailer – Ben Affleck turns criminal number cruncher

May 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Accountant-slideBen Affleck has certainly made impressive turn-around. A few years ago his career seemed in danger of becoming a punchline, but since then he’s become an Oscar-winning director, turned in some really good performances and made a lot of people eat their words.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Christian Wolff (Affleck) is a math savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Behind the cover of a small-town CPA office, he works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. With the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, run by Ray King (J.K. Simmons), starting to close in, Christian takes on a legitimate client: a state-of- the- art robotics company where an accounting clerk (Anna Kendrick) has discovered a discrepancy involving millions of dollars. But as Christian uncooks the books and gets closer to the truth, it is the body count that starts to rise.’

The Accountant will be in UK cinemas on November 4th, 2016. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Indignation Trailer – Logan Lerman takes on a Philip Roth adaptation

May 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

indignation-logan-lermanMany were incredibly impressed with young Logan Lerman’s performance in Indignation when it debuted at Sundance, suggesting it will help many see the Percy Jackson star in a new light (at least for those who haven’t seen Perks Of Being A Wallflower). Now the trailer has arrived so we can get a taste of the Philip Roth adaptation.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on Philip Roth’s late novel, Indignation takes place in 1951, as Marcus Messner (Logan Lerman), a brilliant working class Jewish boy from Newark, New Jersey, travels on scholarship to a small, conservative college in Ohio, thus exempting him from being drafted into the Korean War. But once there, Marcus’s growing infatuation with his beautiful classmate Olivia Hutton (Sarah Gadon), and his clashes with the college’s imposing Dean, Hawes Caudwell (Tracy Letts), put his and his family’s best laid plans to the ultimate test.’

The movie is the first film directed by James Schamus, best known for being the head of Focus Features and for writing most of Ang Lee’s movies.

Following it Sundance debut January, the movie will screen this June at Sundance London on both Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June. There will also be a special event “In Conversation with James Schamus” on 4th June. Tickets for all screenings are now on sale here: www.sundance.org/london

The movie will be out in the US in July.

Michael B. Jordan Up For Marvel’s Black Panther

May 15, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-b-jordanMarvel’s Black Panther will be the first mega-budget comic book movie led by a black superhero (and no, we’re not counting the likes of Blade as mega-budget), and the Comic Book company is certainly keen to pull together a great cast for the movie. Chadwick Boseman has already been seen as the title character in Captain America: Civil War, with Lupita Nyong’o in talks to join him, while Andy Serkis will be the villain and it’s also believed Martin Freeman’s government agent Everett Ross will show up.

Now, THR reports that Michael B. Jordan may be jumping from Fox’s Fantastic Four into Marvel’s own movie’s universe, as he’s now set to appear in Black Panther. It’s not known who he will play, but at least one source says he will be a bad guy.

It will be the third time Jordan has worked with director Ryan Coogler, following Fruitvale Station and Creed. Black Panther will shoot early next year for release February 2018.

First Look At Laverne Cox As Dr. Frank-N-Furter In TV’s New Rocky Horror Picture Show

May 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rocky-horror-tv-laverne-coxLaverne Cox is certainly rocking a different look here, swapping the Orange Is The New Black prison clothes for the fishnets and leather of Fox’s new take on The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Although some have been nervous about the transsexual Cox playing the ‘sweet transvestite’, and whether it would underline trans prejudices, it seems they’re going for a less sexually ambiguous look than Tim Curry in the 1970s film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show follows sweethearts Janet (Victoria Justice) and Brad (Ryan McCartan), who stumble upon Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s (Laverne Cox) bizarre abode. Frank-N-Furter, a sexually ambiguous, flirtatious alien mad-scientist – with the help of his faithful servants, Riff Raff (Reeve Carney) and Magenta – is holding an annual, Transylvanian science convention to showcase the birth of “Rocky Horror” (Staz Nair) – a fit, attractive man created solely to fulfill Frank’s desires.

Executive-produced by Lou Adler (Grammy Award winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee), Gail Berman (TV, film and Broadway producer) and Kenny Ortega (“High School Musical” franchise, “This Is It,” “Descendants,” “Hocus Pocus,” “Newsies”), The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a reimagining of the cult classic, which is celebrating 40 years of theatrical distribution – longer than any other film in history. One of the most popular films of all time, it still plays in movie theaters around the world.’

Unlike some other recent TV event musicals, this one won’t be broadcast live. Instead it’ll be a TV movie take on the classic Richard O’Brien show, which is due to air this autumn, having recently been filming in the US south.

Into The Forest Trailer – Ellen Page & Evan Rachel Wood are post-apocalyptic sisters

May 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

into-the-forest-slideMovies sure like the idea of a world after an apocalypse, and now it’s Ellen Page & Evan Rachel Wood’s turn to head for a wasteland, near-future world with Into The Forest. The film debuted at the end of last year at the Toronto International Film Festival to pretty good reviews, and now we have a trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in the near future, this riveting and suspenseful apocalyptic drama follows two sisters, Nell (Ellen Page) and Eva (Evan Rachel Wood) who live in the Pacific Northwest with their kindly father, Robert. Nell is focused on her studies and Eva is training to be a dancer, but their peaceful lives are disrupted one day by what turns out to be a continent-wide blackout. Whereas at first the family bond together and try to make the most of their difficult circumstances, as time gone on, the challenges become more serious. In the wake of a shocking and violent confrontation that Robert has with a menacing passerby, the sisters must work together in order to survive in their increasingly treacherous new world.’

The movie will be released in the US this summer. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Hell or High Water Trailer – Ben Foster & Chris Pine go bank robbing

May 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hell-or-high-water-trailer-slideDue to premiere soon at Cannes, the first trailer for Hell or High Water has now arrived, which you can take a look at below. The movie stars Chris Pine and Ben Foster, but they’re certainly not in pretty-boy mode.

The film, based on Taylor Sheridan’s black-listed script, follows a divorced dad and his ex-con brother resort to a desperate scheme in order to save their family’s farm in West Texas. As the trailer shows, that involves a lot of crime and bank robbing, but also plenty of bonding between the brother – plus Jeff Bridges in sheriff mode, which is never a bad thing.

Following its Un Certain Regard Canned debut, it’s heading for release in the US in August. Watch the trailer below. [Read more…]
