New The Interview Trailer – James Franco & Seth Rogen are unwilling assassins

November 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

interview-poster-slideAfter a bit of a delay, The Interview is on its way, with Seth Rogen and James Franco teaming up once more for a new comedies where they’re recruited to kill a dictator. Now a new UK trailer has arrived, which you can watch below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the action-comedy The Interview, Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen) run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show “Skylark Tonight.” When they discover that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. As Dave and Aaron prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them, perhaps the two least-qualified men imaginable, to assassinate Kim Jong-un.’

The film has a Christmas US release set, and it’s out February 6th 2015 in the UK. [Read more…]

Upstairs Inferno Trailer – Inside the largest gay mass murder in US history

November 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

upstairs-inferno-slideUpstairs Inferno has been in the works for a while know, and know we can get a fresh look at this documentary that looks at one of the most terrible – yet little known – events in LGBT history. The new teaser comes just as the film’s latest crowdfunding effort raised much of money it needs to cover the exorbitant licensing fees for historical newspaper photographs and newsreels.

On June 24, 1973, an arsonist set fire to a gay bar in New Orleans called the Up Stairs Lounge.  The result was the largest gay mass murder in U.S. history. Despite the staggering historical significance, few people know about the tragedy. Thirty-two people were killed and some bodies were never identified because their families were ashamed that the victims were gay. No one was ever charged with the crime.

The tragedy did not stop at the loss of lives. There were also the delayed injuries: lost jobs, fear, public ridicule and severed families. The devastation was compounded by the homophobic reactions and utter lack of concern by the general public, government and religious leaders. The fire permanently altered lives and was the root of many lifelong struggles.

According to the makers, Upstairs Inferno is poised to be the most comprehensive and authoritative film on the fire. Interviews with survivors and witnesses to the aftermath have been heart wrenching and insightful. Some of the people we interviewed haven’t discussed the fire until now, especially on camera. The documentary also features interviews with historians, experts and current leaders of the New Orleans LGBT community.  Police reports, crime scene photographs, personal photographs, newspaper clippings and video clips from local news stations are also featured in the film. Oscar Isaac Will Be X-Men: Apocalypse’s Title Villain

November 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

oscar-isaacThe people who are annoyed that Ridley Scott’s Exodus has a cast largely made up of white people – despite being about ancient Egyptians and Israelites – probably won’t like this, but X-Men: Apocalypse has found its Middle Eastern born villain in the form of the Guatemalan born Oscar Isaac. Buy hey, perhaps Jordan was mainly populated by Hispanic people 5,000 years ago.

THR confirms that it’s Oscar who will play Apocalypse in the film (the character was briefly seen at the end of Days Of Future Past, but it wasn’t confirmed who would play him in the next film). He is one of first mutants and has all sorts of powers emanating from the fact he can control all the molecules in his body – meaning he can shape-shift, has superhuman power, can interface with technology and his regeneration abilities have allowed him to live for millennia. At least that’s in the comics and presumably he will be the same in the movie.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set in the 1980s and renunites Michael Fassbender as Magneto, James McAvoy as Professor X and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, who must go up against one of the most powerful mutants there has ever been. As we recently reported, director Bryan Singer is currently looking for young versions of Cyclops and Jean Grey, with some wondering whether the latter will play a vital role in Apocalypse, considering her own potentially apocalyptic powers.

The movie shoots early next year for a summer 2016 release.

Hugh Jackman Gets His Blackbeard On In The First Pics From Pan

November 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pan-preview-pic2-slideOver the next few weeks we should be seeing the first shoots of hype for some of what Hollywood is hoping will be the big films of 2015. We already know that a Jurassic World trailer arrived on Friday, while as Star Wars Episode VII will debut the same day in select cinemas.

However one film that might need a bit more of a push than most – simply because it’s not a sequel or spin-off -is Pan, director Joe Wright‘s Peter Pan origin story.

When Hugh Jackman was spotted with a shaved head earlier this year, many assumed that was because his Blackbeard (it’s an origin so Hook isn’t the big baddie in this one) would be bald. However as these first pics show, which arrive via EW, it’s because he’s got a bit of a weird wig.

The images also show young Levi Miller as Peter, who is kidnapped by Blackbeard’s pirates and taken off to Neverland. Hook will appear in the film – in the form of Gerrett Hedlund – but he’s just a member of the crew and befriends Pan, although presumably by the end of the movie we’ll see exactly how they became mortal enemies.

The film’s out July 2015. [Read more…]

You And The Night (DVD Review)

November 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Kate Moran, Niels Schneider, Nicolas Maury, Eric Cantona, Beatrice Dalle
Director: Yann Gonzalez
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: November 24th 2014 (UK)

You And The Night is one of those movies where viewers are likely to have extremely different reactions to it. I can easily imagine that some will absolutely adore it and it’ll become one of their favourite movies, other will find the whole thing too strange, pretentious and perhaps even boring, while some will appreciate it while also being slightly nonplussed. I fit into the latter camp.

A couple, Matthias (Niels Schneider) and Ali (Kate Moran), along with their transvestite maid Udo (Nicolas Maury), are getting ready for a night of debauchery. They have invited guests who go by unusual names such as The Slut, The Star, The Stud and The Teen. However it doesn’t turn out to be the orgy that was expected, as each person arrives with their own story, secrets and desires which they tell to the others and which we see in stylised flashback. Boys On Film 12: Confession (DVD Review)

November 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Lucas Pittaway, Gharrett Patrick Paon, Michael Gaty, Jake Robbins
Director: Various
Running Time: 102 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: November 24th 2014 (UK)

The Boys On Film series is back with its 12th instalment, this time loosely themed around the idea of Confession.  Boys On Film is the most popular short film DVD anthology in the world, of any genre, and if you’ve watched them it’s clear why, as there’s a huge amount of incredibly good LGBT shorts out there, much of which would be hidden from the majority of people if it weren’t for discs like this.

This time the films range from one about a 17-year-old with a crush on the local priest to another focussing on a Hollywood hunk heading to his hometown with the hope of rekindling an old relationship. So what is the Boys On Film 12 short film selection like?

And you can see what we think of other Boys On Film releases here. [Read more…]

Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine (DOC NYC Review)

November 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Matt Shepard, Judy Shepard, Dennis Shepard, Michelle Josue
Director: Michelle Josue
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: November 20th 2014 (DOC NYC Screening)

There are some people who become totemic. Their name and/or image are indelibly associated with something to the point that the person behind it often gets hidden or ignored. That’s certainly true of Matthew Shepard, who in October 1998 at 21-years-old was savagely beaten, tied to a fence and left for dead. By the time he passed away six days later he had become international news, with people around the world shocked at what was a truly cruel and barbaric crime motivated by homophobia.

No anti-gay crime before or since has had the kind of international impact Shepard’s death did, helping to give people a rallying point to demand change and to say that LGBT people would no longer put up with the kind of bigotry and potential violence from the homophobic society that surrounded them – especially as there were comparatively few legal protections afforded gay people. Far From The Madding Crowd Teaser Trailer – Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts and Tom Sturridge take on Thomas Hardy

November 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

far-from-the-madding-crowd-poster1Having been forced to study it at school, I have an irrational hatred of Far From The Madding Crowd, but hopefully this new film version won’t be as tedious as the book (the 1967 movie with Julie Christie and Terence Stamp wasn’t bad, so there is hope).

This new take from director Thomas Vinterberg stars Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen and Tom Sturridge, and now the first teaser trailer and poster have arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching wilfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.’

It’ll be out in cinemas next Spring. [Read more…]

Spirited Away (Blu-ray Review)

November 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Rumi Hiiragi, Miyu Irino, Daveigh Chase, Jason Marsden
Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Running Time: 125 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: November 24th 2014 (UK)

As Spirited Away is the movie that helped Studio Ghibli become far better known in the West than it ever had before – particularly when it walked away with the 2003 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature – it’s a bit of a surprise that it’s never come out on Blu-ray in the UK before. However now it’s here, getting a release of its own before it becomes part of an 11 disc Studio Ghibli Blu-ray collection on December 8th.

It is undoubtedly a strange and often weird movie, but also a beautiful and incredibly involving one. There’s an odd sense of randomness to much of it, but then there also was to The Wizard Of Oz and Alice In Wonderland, which undoubtedly served as inspiration for the way the story is told.
