The Foxy Merkins Trailer – Homeless lesbian prostitutes get a buddy comedy

July 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

foxy-merkinsThe sci-fi comedy Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same was a film that was a lot more fun than the unusual premise suggested. Now the director and some of the stars of that film are back with The Foxy Merkins, a very different film but one which shares the earlier movie’s ability to find comedy in places you might not expect.

The movie screened at Sundance and this weekend was seen at the Newfest New York LGBT film festival – and hopefully it’ll reach a wider audience soon.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In this raucous buddy comedy, a young women’s studies major embarks on a dubious career as a lesbian prostitute for fancy upper-class Manhattan ladies under the tutelage of a socialite/pimp.’

Lesbians becoming prostitutes doesn’t sound like promising ground for raucous comedy, but The Foxy Merkins attempts to constantly find humour by taking on issues such as sex work and homelessness and exploring them in an unexpected way. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

We Came to Sweat: The Legend of Starlite Trailer – Looking at New York’s oldest black gay bar

July 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

we-came-to-sweatIt often seems that capitalism has no time for history, and that’s the case for the bar profiled in We Came to Sweat. Founded in 1962, The Starlite was Brooklyn’s oldest black owned and operated gay bar. Over the decades it had been a refuge for people of colour who didn’t just face prejudice because of their sexuality, but also from other gay people because of their race.

The documentary picks up the story in 2010 after a new owner had taken over the building the Starlite was housed in. Due to the gentrification of the area the rent was massively increased and eviction prodeeding were looming.

As well as looking at The Starlite’s importance to New York’s gay history, the documentary also covers the fight to save it, with the patrons and devoted staff trying to find a way to save it.

The film had its world premiere on Friday at the New York LGBT film festival, Newfest. You can take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Golf Alpha Yankee Trailer – Inside the life of young, gay Iranian refugees living in limbo

July 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

golf-alpha-yankee-slideOne of the things I think can be most beneficial about LGBT cinema is giving us an insight into gay life in other parts of the world. However there are some places where making films about gay people isn’t just difficult is could be life threatening – that includes Iran.

The documentary Golf Alpha Yankee may not have been able to go right into Iran, but it does give a voice to those who have escaped a place where the threat isn’t just that gay sex could potentially result in the death penalty, but also the societal condemnation and risk of blackmail that goes along with that. Even in this trailer it’s pretty powerful stuff.

To help cover the cost of post-production, a Kickstarter campaign has been set up, so after you’ve watch the trailer below, you can help out. You can also find out more over at the film’s website.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Young gay Iranians, having endured torture and imprisonment by Iran’s secret police, have escaped their homeland and managed to find temporary refuge with the United Nations Turkey.

‘Living in small conservative communities, closeted and jobless in an unending limbo, they endure a years-long process of interviews that they hope will result in permission to resettle in the west, and with it, the freedom to love without penalty.’

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Tom Hardy Is Looking Hot As Mad Max Fury Road Character Posters Debut

July 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mad-max-fury-road-character-poster1Mad Max Fury Road is finally set to arrive in cinemas May 2015 after a ridiculously long time in development and almost three years after it was actually filmed. To help get the excitement building the film has made it presence felt at Comic Con, and that includes releasing the rather cool posters you can see above and below.

They feature Tom Hardy as the titular Max, Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa, Hugh Keays-Bynre as Immortal Joe and an almost unrecognisable Nicholas Hoult as Nux.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The post-apocalyptic action film is set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life.
‘Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order… There’s Max, a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos.

‘And… Furiosa, a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.’

Take a look at the posters above and below. [Read more…]

King Kong Movie Skull Island Announced

July 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

king-kongWhen Legendary Pictures had their shingle at Warner Brothers, they got involved in all manner of the studios properties, such as Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight movies. Now they’ve moved to Universal and are looking into that studio’s back catalogue. Perhaps unsurprisingly they have come up with King Kong.

At Comic Con, Legendary managed to surprise the Hall H audience with a teaser trailer that many apparently initially thought was going to be for Jurassic World, but ending up taking the viewers through a lush, tropical island until they finally meet the star of the show, Kong himself.

The film will be called Skull Island, and will presumably be a prequel set in the place that is Kong’s home. No other story details were released.

During the panel Legendary also announced that in Godzilla 2, the big lizard will fight Mothra, King Ghidorah and Rodan. Now some are wondering if we’ll eventually get Godzilla Vs. Kong.

Horns Trailer – What’s growing out of Daniel Radcliffe’s forehead?

July 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

horns-teaser-trailerHorns certainly shows a different side of Daniel Radcliffe – although you have to wait until the very end to properly see what’s really changed about him for this role, as he literally has horns growing out of his forehead.

In Horns, ‘Ig Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe) is accused of the violent rape and killing of his girlfriend, Merrin Williams (Juno Temple). After a hard night of drinking, Ig awakens, hungover, to find horns growing out of his head; they have the ability to drive people to confess sins and give in to selfish impulses. Ig decides to use this effective tool to discover the circumstances of his girlfriend’s death and to seek revenge by finding the true murderer.’

It certainly look pretty intense and rather unusual. Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) direct.

It’ll be in cinemas later this year. [Read more…]

Tusk Trailer – Justin Long & Haley Joel Osment star in Kevin Smith’s strange movie

July 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tuskEver since it was announced, Tusk sounded like a strange film, and the trailer does nothing to disabuse us of that idea.

Indeed it’s perhaps even stranger than we might have thought it would be – Michael Parks’ old soldier doesn’t want to die alone, even if that means holding someone hostage and trying to turn him into a walrus!

With Long tied to a chair by a madman, it’s up to his friends to find him. Genesis Rodriguez, Haley Joel Osment and Ralph Garman co-star.

Take a look at the trailer below and decide for yourself whether this is so bonkers it might be inspired, or whether it’s just completely nuts. [Read more…]

Joaquin Phoenix in Talks For Marvel’s Doctor Strange

July 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

camp-the-documentary-joaquin-phoenixVarious names have been rumoured for the title role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, such as Benedict Cumberbatch. However the man who’s likely to take the job has slightly come out of left field, as THR reports that Joaquin Phoenix is in talks for the role.

Although he hasn’t accepted yet, it’s believed Marvel is hoping to get him to accept quickly and they may even officially announce him during their Comic-Con 2014 panel. It’s believed a sticking point might arise if Marvel wants Phoenix to sign one of their usual long-term contracts, as he’s more likely to want a per-film deal.

If he does sign on, it’d certainly be something different for the actor, who has generally steered clear of big blockbuster type movies. However it’s suggested co-stars such as Jeremy Renner (The Immigrant), Scarlett Johansson (Her), and Josh Brolin (Inherent Vice) have helped convince him it’s worth becoming part of the Marvel Universe.

If you don’t know the character, Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon, a practicing sorcerer, and serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.

Edgar Wright To Direct Film About Sexual Identity Confusion & Killer Praying Mantises

July 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Edgar-Wright2After his last minute departure from Ant-Man, Edgar Wright has had to look around for other things to do. It’s already been revealed that he plans to shoot one of his long-gestating projects next, the action crime flick Baby Driver, and now he’s signed on for a new one.

He signed up for Sony Pictures’ Grasshopper Jungle, based on Andrew Smith Dutton’s young adult novel, according to Deadline.

Scott Rosenberg will write the screenplay, which is a coming-of-age story about an Iowa teenager, who think his worst problem is confusion over his sexual identity, as he can’t tell whether he’s in love with his friend Robby or his girlfriend, Shann. However things get decidedly more complicated when he and Robby accidentally unleash a deadly, genetically engineered plague of 6-foot-tall praying mantises.

The bugs ‘live a life the boys could only dream of, acting out on their insatiable appetites for food, fighting and fornicating’.

While with most Hollywood films we’d worry the issue around sexual identity would be erased for the screen, with Wright at the helm it’s hopeful they will remain and become a major part of the movie.

It’s believed Wright will shoot the movie directly after Baby Driver

The Full Avengers: Age Of Ultron Concept Art Poster Is Here

July 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-comic-con-poster10Yesterday we posted four Avengers: Age Of Ultron concept art posters, and now we’ve got the other four, which all piece together to make the giant battle poster above.

The new posters feature Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor. And if you look at the Quicksilver pic you’ll notice someone floating about in the background, which is believed to be Vision.

Vision is the sentient, embodied version of Paul Bettany’s Jarvis, Tony Stark’s assistant. However it’s now known what side he’ll be on, or whether as in the comics he is created by villainous Ultron, which is other Stark tech designed to help mankind when the Avengers aren’t around, but which goes rogue and causes all manner of trouble.

Take a look at the posters above and below.

The First Official Pic Of Gal Gadot As Wonder Woman Is Here

July 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

batman-vs-superman-wonder-womanAt Comic Con today Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot took to the Hall H to a rapturous reception in order to talk about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Things went into overdrive when the audience was shown a special teaser, giving them a look at Affleck as Batman, with fans suggesting the footage suggested the the hero is styled very closely to how he looked in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Rises. There’s no news on whether that teaser will be released outside Comic Con, but Zack Snyder did ensure there was something for those not in San Diego – the first official image of Gal Gadot in full costume as Wonder Woman.

I doubt the outfit will please feminists (indeed there’s a slightly Michael Bay female-fetishism about it), but it does look cool, and hopefully in the film she’ll get to kick ass and we’ll forget she apparently was concerned more about her costume’s sex-appeal than it’s ability to help her do her job.

Take a good look at it above.

Naked Warwick Rowers Launch Their 2015 Crowdfunding Campaign With A Fun, NSFW Video

July 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

naked-rowers-2015You can always rely on the Naked Rowers to sexily titillate while raising money for a good cause. The University Of Warwick Men’s Rowing Team has come a long way since they decided to strip down for a calendar a few years ago in the hope of raising a few hundred pounds.

Now their calendars have become an annual event, eagerly anticipated by gay men and straight women. The Naked Rowers (as they’ve become known) also have their own charity, Sport Allies, a programme developed by the rowers themselves in partnership with the charity, Educational Action Challenging Homophobia.

The 2015 calendar will be out later this year, but before then the rowers have launched a crowdfunding campaign both to help pay for getting the calendar made and printed. Those who donate are being offered all sorts of goodies, including the famed ‘making of…’ videos from the last few years, which are full of sexy, naked young men. And if you give £1000, you gets ‘a complimentary signed limited edition print of our very first frontal art nude’. Things are changing if they’re going frontal, as up until now the rowers have been masters of only offering us half-seen glimpses of peen.

To help advertise the crowdfunder the rowers have launched the sexy video below. So take a look at that and some pics from it below, and then head over to the Warwick Rowers website to give some cash. [Read more…]
