Mickey Mouse Was A Gay-Basher In Unearthed 1930s Comic Strip!

April 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mickey-mouse-slideIf you look into the Disney archive you’ll find a few rather unsavoury things. While to some these racist and anti-Semitic comic strips and cartoons are evidence that the House Of Mouse is and always has been evil incarnate, they’re really more evidence that the past was a very different place.

Now Disney can add gay-bashing to the list of past crimes as a 1930s comic strip has been unearthed by DeviantArt and GayStarNews, where Mickey Mouse literally kicks the butt of someone he thinks is too effeminate for his Depression-era conception of what an animated man/creature/thing ought to be.

And it’s not just the violence we can find offensive, as in just a few short frames, whoever drew the strip always manages to cram some offensive stereotyping in as well. And quite frankly, even if Mickey is a homophobe, he also needs some major anger management classes.

Of course nowadays Disney is a far more LGBT-friendly place. Indeed it’s now more often in trouble with anti-gay nuts who think the company is dedicated to turning all youngsters gay. However in the past it sometime reflected rather different values.

Not Looking Episode 4 – Lance Bass drops by the boys in the gay-themed web series

April 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s another week and another episode of Not Looking, the parody of Looking that’s turned out to be just as much a comment on real gay life as the show that inspired it.

And this time it’s special guest star time as Lance Bass stops by for a cameo, alongside the likes of regulars Drew Droege, Justin Martindale and Jason Looney.

Once more it’s a lot of fun, and many will recognise the odd irrational jealousy when a straight female friend ‘cheats’ on you, while one of the boys starts to think that perhaps he shouldn’t have friend zoned his roomie.

Take a look above. The only bad thing about it is that we’ve only got one more episode to come. Take a look at the earlier episodes by clicking here. [Read more…]

James Franco May Play Man Who Went From LGBT Rights Fighter To Ex-Gay Activist

April 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-franco-600pxJames Franco is turning his back on the gays! Well, no, he isn’t, but he may be playing a character who does. The NY Post reports that Franco is teaming with director Gus Van Sant to make a movie about the controversial Michael Glatze.

Glatze started out as a young gay man who was passionate about helping LGBT youth, including marching in gay rights rallies and urging young people to celebrate their non-traditional sexualities. He also launched the magazine Young Gay America after working at XY, becoming a leading voice in the gay rights fight.

However in 2004 he had a health scare involving a possible heart defect, which caused him to turn to conservative Christianity. Shortly afterwards he completely renounced everything he had previously stood for and said that he was now ‘ex-gay’.

In 2007 he wrote in a WorldNetDaily article that, “Homosexuality, delivered to young minds, is by its very nature pornographic.” Shortly afterwards he revealed that he was “repulsed to think about homosexuality” and that he was “going to do what I can to fight it.”

He has been rather changeable though (as if he’s still searching for something), briefly becoming a Mormon as well as occasionally seeming to slightly soften his stance by talking about bisexuality and fluid sexuality. He’s currently married to a woman and perhaps most surprisingly of all, despite this entire journey he’s still only 38.

The movie will be made on a budget of $3.5 million, with the hope of shooting in New York in July. It’ll be interesting to see which way Van Sant takes it, as while gay himself he is known for having a bit of a counterculture penchant, leaving some to wonder if he will use Glatze’s story to pick apart gay assimilation. More like though it will be more the tale of a man’s tragic fall. Either way, as Glatze hasn’t (yet) decided gays are ok after all, it’s unlikely to have a happy ending.

The Drop Trailer – Tom Hardy & James Gandolfini star in the Dennis Lehane scripted movie

April 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Previously known as Animal Rescue (but understandably retitled as this is more crime thriller than a movie about saving cute critters), The Drop is also the final screen role for James Gandolfini, who stars alongside the always excellent Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace.

After the first pictures arrived a few days ago comes the trailer, which you watch right here.

The movie is based on Dennis Lehane;s short story about a Boston bartender (Hardy) who desperately attempting to free himself from his past criminal life. Brad Pitt In Talks For World War II Romantic Thriller

April 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Graham King’s GK Films is backing the movie, which as well as Pitt, is currently wooing a major director, who is expected to be announced shortly.

Steven Knight (Eastern Promises) wrote the script, although there’s absolutely no details on the plot at the moment.

At the moment the film is hoping to shoot in the early part of 2015.

Win Three Alec Guinness Classics In The Ealing Studios Collection – Vol. 1 Blu-ray Box Set!

April 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ealing-collection-bd-cover-largeThe Ealing Studios Collection – Vol. 1 Blu-ray Box Set is out in the UK now, and if you’d like to try and win a copy, you’ve come to the right place! We’ve teamed up with Studiocanal to give away three copies.

Ealing’s greatest comedies captured the essence of post-war Britain, both in their evocation of a land once blighted by war but now rising doggedly and optimistically again from the ashes, and in their mordant yet graceful humour. They portray a country with an antiquated class system whose crumbling conventions are being undermined by a new spirit of individual opportunism. In the delightfully wicked Kind Hearts and Coronets, a serial killer politely murders his way into the peerage; in The Lavender Hill Mob a put-upon bank clerk schemes to rob his employers and The Man in the White Suit is a harshly satirical depiction of idealism crushed by the status quo.

A superb box set of some of Sir Alec Guinness’s best work, and together for the first time on Blu-Ray, these are three of the finest Ealing comedies. A perfect introduction for newcomers to the Ealing Classics collection, this trilogy is also a must-have for all British comedy, Ealing film and Alec Guinness fans.

If you’d like to try and win one of the three copies of The Ealing Studios Collection – Vol. 1 Blu-ray Box Set that we’ve got to give away, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on April 15th 2014, so get answering and good luck! [Read more…]

Sex Tape Red Band Trailer – Cameron Diaz & Jason Segel don’t want their naughtiness escaping

April 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Later this year we’re all going to get to see Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel’s Sex Tape, but first we can get a taster with the first trailer.

Here’s the movie’s synopsis (and as you’ve already guessed, it’s not just a real sex tape featuring the two stars): ‘When Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) first got together, their romantic connection was intense – but ten years and two kids later, the flame of their love needs a spark. To kick things up a notch, they decide – why not? – to make a video of themselves trying out every position in The Joy of Sex in one marathon three-hour session.

‘It seems like a great idea – until they discover that their most private video is no longer private. With their reputations on the line, they know they’re just one click away from being laid bare to the world… but as their race to reclaim their video leads to a night they’ll never forget, they’ll find that their video will expose even more than they bargained for.’

Ben Stiller In Talks To Play Gay Choreographer In Alan Ball’s I Am Chippendales

April 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ben-StillerSince the success of Magic Mike, the film world has known there’s a market out there for movies about male strippers. Now Ben Stiller may be starring in one, as Variety reports that he is circling I Am Chippendales, with American Beauty and True Blood’s Alan Ball set to write and direct.

The movie is based on the true story of how Paul Snider, Somen “Steve” Banerjee and lawyer Bruce Nahin founded the Chippendales nightclub. However after initial massive success, things rather went to Banerjee’s head as he helped orchestrate a plot to murder of three former Chippendales dancers he thought were now in competition with him, as well as attempting to have Chippendales co-founder, Bruce Nahin, killed.

He pleaded guilty to attempted arson, racketeering and murder for hire charges.

If a deal is finalized, Ben Stiller will play choreographer Nick DeNoia, who helped conceive the idea of the Chippendales, helping turn the male dance club into an international sensation. However DeNoia ended up being one of the people Banerjee wanted dead.

Banerjee was known for being incredibly flamboyant and sharp, not putting up with any dancer who didn’t meet his exacting dimensions. It’s also believed he slept with more than a few, although due to the fact this was the 80s and the Chippendales were so determined they were for female rather than gay eyes, there was also a lot of homophobia around. It’s now known exactly how the film will deal with all this, but as Alan Ball is gay himself and has dealy with LGBT themes throughout his career, it probably won’t shy away from it.

Ball is directing from his own screenplay, which is adapted from Rodney Sheldon’s book. It’s not known when it will shoot.

The Pink Panther Cat Is Getting His Own CG/Live-Action Movie

April 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pink-panther-cat-slideThe Pink Panther has already had a 21st Century reboot with Steve Martin as the hapless Inspector Clouseau, who was first played by Peter Sellers in the 1963. However there’s also the ‘real’ Pink Panther – the animated cat who started off in the credits of the Sellers movies, before getting his own cartoon.

Now MGM, which owns the character, has revealed it’s developing a feasture-length CG/live-action feature film based on the animated Pink Panther. The legendary Julie Andrews will act as a producer, which may sound odd until you remember that she was the wife of the late Blake Edwards, who co-created and directed the original Pink Panther movies.

50 years on from his creation, the new movie is described as a caper that ‘will harken back to the tone shared by the original Friz Freleng and David H. DePatie cartoons as well as that of Blake Edwards’ films’.

Julie Andrews commented, “I am delighted that the legacy of Blake’s iconic Pink Panther franchise will continue to grow in its new hybrid form. It is exciting that the quintessential ‘next step’ for our beloved Panther will be enjoyed by a 4th generation of audiences. I feel that Blake is encouraging us on.”

David Silverman, producer of The Simpsons and the director of The Simpsons Movie, is currently set to helm.

Byung-hun Lee & More Up For Terminator: Genesis

April 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

byung-hun-leeWith Terminator: Genesis set to start shooting pretty soon, director Alan Taylor is busy fitting the pieces of the cast together. Now he’s adding three more to the roster, with THR reporting that Byung-hun Lee (G.I. Joe Retaliation), Michael Gladis (Mad Men) and Sandrine Holt (House of Cards) signing up.

Nothing has been revealed about who the actors will play, other than that Byung-hun Lee’s character, “promises to be a doozy.”

They join a cast that includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke as John Connor, Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, J.K. Simmons as a detective who has been obsessed with the Terminator/Sarah Connor case since 1984 and Dayo Okeniyi, who signed on last week to play the son of Cyberdyne engineer, Miles Dyson.

The movie is said to be both the beginning of a standalone trilogy and the continuation of the original franchise. Not surprisingly, Arnold Schwarzenegger recently revealed that his Terminator character will have aged, although he didn’t say exactly how. It’s also known that there’ll be plenty of time travel – hence why the actor playing Sarah Connor is significantly younger than the person who will be her son.

Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) is directing from a script by Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry) and Laeta Kalogridis (White House Down).
