Kick-Ass 2 (DVD)

December 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chloe Moretz, Jim Carrey, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Aaron Taylor-Johnson
Director: Jeff Wadlow
Running Time: 103 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 9th 2013

2010’s Kick-Ass gained a lot of fans who loved its blend of heart, humour and over-the-top comic book violence. Now we get the follow-up, which sees Jeff Wadlow take over from Matthew Vaughn in the director’s chair. While it’s an okay effort, it’s difficult not to wish Vaughn had stuck around.

Picking up some time after the first movie, Dave Lizewski (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) has left his Kick-Ass superhero alter-ego behind and is now attending high school along Mindy McCready (Chloe Moretz), the former Hit Girl. While they may not be trying to fight the bad guys, Kick-Ass has inspired others to take up the costumed vigilante cause. [Read more…]

Has The Title Of The New Terminator Movie Been Revealed?

December 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Terminator-2With a ticking clock before some rights return to James Cameron, Terminator franchise owners Annapurna Pictures is trying to get a fifth movie into production as quick as possible, and with a desire to make as much money out of it as possible, there’s also talk of a new TV series.

Now it seems the title of the film may have been revealed, as Production Weekly tweeted, ‘Added prod. office info for Alan Taylor’s TERMINATOR: GENESIS and the indie LILA & EVE starring Viola Davis & @JLo’.

There are already a lot of people saying Terminator: Genesis is a very underwhelming title, so don’t be surprised if it changes, but that’s what seems to be the name at the moment. The movie should see Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to the franchise, with a 2015 release planned.

On the TV series front, Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (Thor, X-Men: First Class) have signed on to write a pilot script and executive produce, with Terminator 5 writers Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogridis also serving as executive producers.

The plot of the series will apparently follow a crucial moment from the original Terminator, taking the story in a completely different direction than the movie. The narratives of both the Terminator 5 movie and its subsequent sequels will be designed to intersect with the TV story line at some point in the future.

So it certainly seems we’re gonna get a lot of Terminator, but with Annpurna having paid a huge amount for the rights, it’s little wonder they’re trying to mine them.

Frozen Sneaks Past Catching Fire To Top The US Box Office

December 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

frozen-teaser-quadFrozen had a great opening over the Thanksgiving holiday, but even so it ended up second on the US box office chart due to the continuing success of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. However this weekend the roles were reversed as Frozen snuck past Catching Fire with $31 million versus Hunger Games 2’s $27 million.

It’s good news for Disney as it’s one of the best holds following Thanksgiving ever and suggests the movie will continue to do well going into Christmas.

The only new entry on the chart was the Christian Bale starrer Out Of The Furnace, which may have placed third, but still tanked pretty badly taking just $5.3 million. Some had thought the movie might be an awards contender, but it’s unlikely it’ll be in the running and will probably end up a complete flop, especially as it seems to be getting pretty lousy word of mouth.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 6th-9th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Frozen $31.6 $134.2
2 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire $27.0 $336.6
3 Out Of The Furnace $5.3 $5.3
4 Thor: The Dark World $4.7 $193.6
5 Delivery Man $3.7 $24.7
6 Homefront $3.3 $15.2
7 The Book Thief $2.7 $12.0
8 The Best Man Holiday $2.6 $67.2
9 Philomena $2.2 $8.2
10 Dallas Buyers Club $1.4 $12.4

Starring: Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, Douglas Smith, Jake Abel
Director: Thor Freudenthal
Running Time: 106 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: December 9th 2013

After Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief failed to become a massive success, most people thought that would be the last we’d see of Rick Riordan’s boy demigod. While it took Fox a while to decide to make a follow-up, it’s now here.

This time around Percy (Logan Lerman) is living at Camp Half-Blood alongside the other half-human kids with Olympian parents, which is the only place they’re safe, thanks to a protective barrier that prevents the forces that would like to kill them from getting in. However just as Percy learns that his nemesis from the first film, Luke (Jake Abel), isn’t dead, the tree that’s responsible for the maintaining barrier begins to die. The only way to reverse the poisoning is with the mystical Golden Fleece. [Read more…]

The Conjuring (DVD)

December 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Lili Taylor, Ron Livingston
Director: James Wan
Running Time: 107 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 9th 2013

People often bemoan with horror movies that it’s just the same old plots over and over. However The Conjuring shows that sometimes you don’t need a brand new story if you have a director and actors who know that they’re doing.

James Wan has been proving that idea with the likes of Saw and Insidious, and it’s certainly true with The Conjuring. It may be a pretty typical haunted house story, but it delivers on the entertainment and jolts. [Read more…]

Interior. Leather Bar (DVD)

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: James Franco, Val Lauren, Travis Mathews, Brenden Gregory
Director: James Franco
Running Time: 60 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: December 8th 2013

Sometimes it’s difficult to work out what’s going through the head of James Franco. There’s some evidence in Interior. Leather Bar that Franco isn’t sure himself, but that he’d sure like to find out.

First some background. In 1980 Al Pacino starred in Cruising, with The Exorcist’s William Friedkin directing. The movie sees Al as a cop who is tasked with going undercover into the New York S&M scene, where a gay serial killer is lurking. At first he hates it, but soon a strange fascination grows. Win James Franco’s Gay-Themed Interior. Leather Bar On DVD!

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

interior-leather-bar-dvd-cover
The Travis Mathews and James Franco collaboration Interior. Leather Bar is out from Peccadillo Pictures on Monday December 9th, and we’ve teamed up with them to offer three of you a copy in this competition!

In order to avoid an X rating, 40 minutes of gay S&M footage is rumoured to have been cut and destroyed from the 1980 film, Cruising, starring Al Pacino. Inspired by the mythology of this controversial film, filmmakers James Franco and Travis Mathews collaborate to imagine their own lost footage.

Amid the backdrop of a frenzied film set, actor Val Lauren reluctantly agrees to take the lead in the film. Val is repeatedly forced to negotiate his boundaries during scenes on and “off-camera” as unsimulated gay sex happens around him. The film itself is constructed as a play with boundaries remaining queer in subject and form. As much a film about filmmaking as it is about an exploration of sexual and creative freedom, Interiors. Leather Bar defies easy categorisation.

If you’d like to try and win one of the three copies of Interior. Leather Bar on DVD that we’ve got to give away, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on December 20th 2013, so get answering and good luck! [Read more…]

Egyptian Censors Savagely Cut The Country’s First Gay-Themed Movie

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

family-secrets-egyptWhile many had hoped the Arab Spring would bring more openness and freedom to Egypt, it seems things have become increasingly difficult on the LGBT front, including in the world of film. Earlier this year, two movies with (relatively mild) gay content were banned from the 35th Cairo International Film Festival. Now Pinknews reports that the country’s censors have demanded 13 scenes be cut from Egypt’s first homegrown movie that directly tackles gay subjects.

And that’s despite the fact there’s no sexually explicit content in the movie at all.

The film is Hany Fawzy’s Family Secrets, which is ‘based on the true story of a young gay man who grows up with a single mother and an elder brother who is subjected to child abuse. The story goes on to see the gay protagonist go on to see therapists about the fact that he is gay in an attempt to “cure” himself, and after going through the therapy, he finds that he no longer feels himself.’

Unsurprisingly, Fawzy is less than impressed with what the censors are trying to do, as he feels cutting so much will inevitably remove vital parts of the plot and damage the film. One of the scenes the censors want to butchers sees the main character come out to his sister, while in another he accuses his father of “being responsible for his sexual orientation”.

Although the movie may get cut in Egypt, hopefully the complete film will be able to be seen elsewhere.

James Franco Gets NSFW As Robin Leaves A Mess On Batman

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-francoSometimes it’s difficult to work out what’s going on with James Franco. For example, are the pics below some sort of artistic statement, is he just messing around, or was he just very, very drunk? Or perhaps he’s a secret Batman S&M fan!

If art, we’re assuming he’s trying to explore the homoerotic underpinnings of the relationship between Batman and Robin by making absolutely explicit something that is usually only implied. After all, he did title them ’50 Shades of Batman and Robin’.

If just messing around, we want to know if that’s real man gravy?

The actor posted the images on his Instagram. Take a look below to see if you can figure out what’s going on. [Read more…]

Gay Cyclist Graeme Obree Seeks Funding For A Film About His Life

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

graeme-obree
We welcomed one more out sports person this week when Tom Daley revealed he is dating a guy. But a few years ago cyclist Graeme Obree came out of the closet, letting the world know he was gay in 2011, having come out to his family on 2005.

He had a difficult life before that, marked by things such as the tragic death of his brother and suicide attempts. He was also married to a woman and had two sons. However, in sports he broke numerous cycling records and was known for his innovations that took the sport forward, having used bits of common machinery to re-engineer his bicycle. In 2006 a movie about his life, The Flying Scotsman starring Jonny Lee Miller, was released – although that didn’t touch on his sexuality.

Now a feature-length documentary is being brought together, allowing Obree to tell his own story in his own words, mainly covering two years of his life where as a man in his mid-40s he seeks out a new cycling project to challenge himself. The film, The Outsider, is now seeking £20,000 on Kickstarter, which will ‘cover the cost of a craft editor, and the editing suite he will use. The sound mix. The completion of the final big screen version, colour corrected with titles and graphics as well as the master for the streams, downloads and DVD’s.’

You can find out more over at Kickstarter and you can get a feel for the movie below. [Read more…]

Reasonable Doubt Trailer – Dominic Cooper goes up against Samuel L. Jackson

December 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

2014 is hopefully going to be a big year for Dominic Cooper, with a villainous role in Need For Speed, as well as Reasonable Doubt – and now we have the trailer for the latter.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Reasonable Doubt follows District Attorney Mitch Brockden (Cooper), who commits a fatal hit-and-run and decides to throw the case against the accused criminal blamed for the crime, only to learn that he acquitted a guilty man that he needs to find and stop before he kills again.’

Samuel L. Jackson co-stars with a January US release set, although it’s not clear when it’ll reach the UK. [Read more…]
