Director: Various
Running Time: 237 mins

Release Date: September 9th 2013

DreamWorks Animation has a bit of a problem. When it has a hit movie, its share price goes up and they make a lot of money, but if they have a flop, things go bad very fast, which eventually led to a lot of layoffs. To try and stem this boom and bust cycle, they’ve gone heavily into sequels that should be sure-fire winners and more recently tried to take their product to TV, in the hope it can ensure they have a healthy bottom line at all times. After a Kung Fu Panda series comes Dragons: Riders Of Berk, based on How To Train Your Dragon. [Read more…]

All Is Bright Trailer – Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd reunite after prison to sell Christmas trees

September 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd are looking less than glamorous as ex-cons in All Is Bright, which has recently released its first trailer. It’s not your usual Christmas movie either.

Rudd and Giamatti are two French Canadian ex-cons who reunite after one of the is released from prison and travel to New York City with a scheme to get rich quick selling Christmas trees. Easygoing charmer Rene (Rudd) clashes with misanthropic ex-con Dennis (Giamatti), whose wife Rene just stole.

Sally Hawkins also stars, with Junebug’s Phil Morrison directing. It’ll be out in October in the US. [Read more…]

Jeremy Irvine Up For The Intense The Reach Alongside Michael Douglas

September 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jeremy Irvine in Now Is Good

Jeremy Irvine

Jeremy Irvine is one of the those actors who it feels could have a real, lengthy film career. Following the likes of War Horse, Great Expectations and Now Is Good, he’s signed up to star alongside Michael Douglas in The Reach according to THR.

It will certainly be a challenge for both actors, as they’re essentially only people in the film for the majority of the running time. It’s about a hunting enthusiast (played by Douglas) who hires a guide (Irvine) ‘for a trek through the desert. The two start off on the wrong foot and things only get worse when the hunter kills a prospector. The hunter then becomes a merciless torturer to the guide and puts him through painful mental and physical tests in the middle of the sweltering desert.’

Sounds like fun!

Jean-Baptiste Leonetti is directing the thriller, which is based on a 1972 Robb White novel called Deathwatch. Stephen Susco wrote the scipt. The movie will begin shooting in New Mexico at the end of this month.

Bruce Willis Will Be The Prince In A New Action Thriller

September 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bruce-willisBruce Willis was recently dropped from The Expendables 3 after they wouldn’t pay his asking fee and he reportedly said that he’s bored with action films. However it seems the maker of The Prince has met his price, as Deadline reports that he’s signed up for the action-thriller.

The movie is about, ‘A retired Las Vegas mob enforcer is forced to return to the city and face his former enemies when his teenage daughter goes missing. Willis plays a man who has waited years for the enforcer to return, and a confrontation is inevitable.’

Sarik Andreasyan (American Heist) is set to direct from a script by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore. The movie will start shooting in October in new Orleans.

Chris Hemsworth Is A Top With A Big Hammer In An Accidentally Gay Russian Thor: The Dark World Banner

September 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

thor-dark-world-russian-banner
And the winner of the gayest Marvel poster ever goes to…

Russia probably ought to sue the comic company under its hideous new laws banning the promotion of ‘non-traditional relationships’. After all, what else could a picture of a hunky man who’s about to give a good pounding with his big hammer be all about, especially when over in Russia the movie is called Top 2?

Now I really need to order a copy of the Russian version of the first movie, as who wouldn’t want to see Chris Hemsworth as a Top? And does that make Tom Hiddleston’s Loki a Bottom? It’s a pretty cool pic however unintentionally gay it might be. (And yes, we do know it’s actually Cyrillic and pronounced ‘Tor’, and for the naysayers who think it’s a joke poster, this is absolutely, 100% real).

Here’s The Dark World’s synopsis: ‘Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself.  In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

‘Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, and Jaimie Alexander with Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” is directed by Alan Taylor, produced by Kevin Feige, from a story by Don Payne (credit not final) and screenplay by Christopher Yost and Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (credit not final) and is based on Marvel’s classic Super Hero Thor, who first appeared in the comic book “Journey into Mystery “ #83 in August, 1962.’

The movie’s out October 30th 2013 in the UK, and November 8th in the US.

Ellen Page Will Spy For Queen & Country In Her Own Action Franchise

September 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ellen-page-pic1Ellen Page has just returned to comic book territory playing Kitty Pryde once more in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, and now she’s got another comic adaptation in the works, as Variety reports that she’s set for 20th Century Fox’s female led sky pic Queen & Country.

Based on Greg Rucka’s comic book, ‘the story follows Tara Chace, a British Intelligence agent who tries to stop an international terrorist plot after her identity is compromised and as her personal demons spiral out of control.’

Fox has apparently been looking for a franchise for Page for a long time and they’re hoping that this is it with Variety suggesting that it ‘could do for Page what the Jason Bourne franchise did to lift Matt Damon’s profile’. It’ll be interesting to see if it does that for her.

John Rogers is writing the script, although it doesn’t appear there’s a director of shooting date set yet.

Holly Hunter, Harmony Korine & Chris Messina Join Al Pacino In Manglehorn

September 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

holly-hunter-thumbWe don’t see Holly Hunter on the big screen as much as we used to, but director David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, Prince Avalanche) is hoping to change that, as he’s just cast her in his oddly titled Manglehorn, according to Deadline, and he’s also cast Harmony Korine (director of Spring Breakers) and Argo’s Chris Messina.

Al Pacino was previously cast as A.J. Manglehorn, with Green saying that it’s “the story of a guy who gave up the love of his life for a life of crime and now he regrets it as the world crumbles in front of him. His profession as a locksmith is symbolic of a guy who’s trying to find the key to put his life back together. It’s a love story, the choices you make in your youth and the situations you set up for yourself: you end up sitting alone at the dinner table talking to a cat! I do think there is a beautiful humour in this.”

There’s no news on who Hunter, Korine and Messina will play, although Holly will be the female lead. The plan is to shoot this autumn.

Southland’s Ben McKenzie Will Be The Swimmer

September 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Ben-MckenzieBen McKenzie has had success on TV in the likes of The OC and Southland, but he hasn’t had much of an impact on the big screen. However now he’s signed on to star in The Swimmer, which Richard L. Fox is set to direct.

While McKenzie is American, it’s actually a Scandinavian funded film, with a script by Bard Ivar Engelsas, and will star two of Norway’s celebrated actors, Agnes Kittelsen and Kristoffer Joner.

The movie is about an American extreme swimmer (McKenzie) who embarks on a mission to conquer one of the wildest rivers in Norway – his personal Mt. Everest. But his journey proves that his true conquest is far more daunting than his swim; as he is faced to confront his inner demons and reconcile his past.

McKenzie commented, “It’s a modern story, but timeless as well. Bard’s script really captivated me: a tortured man risking it all in a battle against nature. It’s themes evoke the spirit of Hemingway and London, and I couldn’t be more excited to shoot in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, Norway.”

The actor won’t be on the set for a while yet, as it won’t start shooting in Northern Norway until June 2014. As considering the location and the fact McKenzie will be swimming, we hope he doesn’t mind the cold.

Naomi Watts Going To Holland, Michigan, While Nicole Kidman Replaces Her In Queen Of The Desert

September 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

naomi-wattsNaomi Watts is busy negotiating for film roles as Deadline reports that she’s up for Oscar-winning documentarian Errol Morris’ first narrative feature, Holland, Michigan. However, the same site also reports she’s out of Werner Herzog’s Queen Of The Desert, and Nicole Kidman is already in talks to replace her.

In Holland, Michigan she would be a serial killer’s wife, as the film, written by Andrew Sodroski, will see her as a woman who is deeply wounded when she comes to believe her husband is cheating on her. To get revenge, she decides to begin an affair of her own, but eventually uncovers her husband isnt’t sleeping with other people, he’s killing them.

Queen Of The Desert is a biopic of Gertrude Bell, an explorer, writer, archaeologist and attaché for the British Empire, who is credited with helping to catalyse the formation of the Middle East at the dawn of the 20th Century. She’s been described as the female Lawrence of Arabia, although the film will also include the real T.E. Lawrence, who’s set to be played by Robert Pattinson. There’s no news on exactly what the role Franco is up for will be.

Kidman may well have been drafted in so there’s a bigger name in the lead role. Despite Herzog directing and Watts, Pattinson and James Franco attached to star, it’s had difficulty getting the greenlight. Perhaps that will change now.

Charlie Hunnam Says Queer As Folk Prepared Him For Fifty Shades Of Grey

September 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

charlie-hunnam-shirtlessIt was confirmed last week that Charlie Hunnam has won the lead male role of Christian Grey in the upcoming adaptation of the best-selling 50 Shades Of Grey, opposite Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele. Now he’s been chatting about it, and says that going gay (on-screen at least) at an early age will help him with the role and its inevitable onslaught of kinky sex scenes.

He told THR, “My first job was on a Channel 4 miniseries called Queer as Folk. It was incredibly explicit sexual scenes with a man. I mean I’m 16 and 17 years wiser now. So if I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady.”

Hunnam played the fresh-faced Nathan in Queer As Folk who within the first few minutes of the series was going at it hot and heavy with Aiden Gillan’s Stuart, before he became ‘the one-night stand who wouldn’t go away’.

We have to agree, it probably was good training for 50 Shades. Now we just need to convince Hollywood to replace Dakota Johnson with a guy.

Iron Man 3 (Blu-ray)

September 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, Don Cheadle, Robert Downey Jr.
Director: Shane Black
Running Time: 130 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: September 9th 2013

Iron Man 3 presented an interesting challenge to Marvel, as it’s the completion of the Iron Man trilogy – with no stand-alone adventures for Downey Jr’s metal man likely to follow – but also the follow-up to The Avengers and a prequel to his appearance in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron. As such the movie could have ended up a complete mess, unsure what it was meant to be doing. However it actually handles the challenge fairly well, sewing up themes from the earlier Iron Man movies, while having Tony Stark rocked by the events of the Battle Of New York, which have started causing him to have panic attacks.
