The Master Teaser Trailer

May 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the effects of the financial crisis is that many directors who everyone agrees are extremely good but not particularly commercial have found it tough to get movies made. We haven’t had a film from Paul Thomas Anderson since 2007’s There Will Be Blood, largely he couldn’t get funding for love nor money. Now he’s back with The Master. The first footage debuted yesterday at Cannes and now we get a teaser trailer for the film, which undoubtedly has a bit of a There Will Be Blood vibe. Set in America in the years following World War II, a charismatic intellectual (Philip Seymour Hoffman) launches a faith-based organization and taps a young drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) as his right-hand man. But as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the onetime vagabond finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues Teaser Trailer

May 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week an Anchorman 2 teaser debuted ahead of The Dictator. Now it’s arrived online, so we can all enjoy the return of Ron Burgundy. However, while we have a teaser, the movie itself is yet to shoot, with director Adam McKay last week saying that, “Nothing’s set. Right now I can say for sure there is no Ghost Rider cameo or a scene where Ron fights a wolverine on a nose-diving helicopter. We’re either going to shoot the movie in 3D or 1/2 D.” It’ll arrive in cinemas 2013.

Steven McQueen is going from sex addiction in Shame to slavery in 12 Years A Slave. He’s already got Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt and Chiwetel Ejiofor signed up to star, and now Deadline reports that Little Miss Sunshine and There Will Be Blood’s Paul Dano has joined him.

The project is based on the true story of Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man in the mid-19th Century who was kidnapped in Washington and sold into slavery. He was rescued from a Louisiana cotton plantation in 1853. Dano will be play one of the slave owners who beats the lead character unmercifully

Seth Rogen & Zac Efron’s Townies Lands Director Nick Stoller

May 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nick Stoller (The Five-Year Engagement, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) is in negotiations to direct the collegiate comedy Townies for Universal Pictures, which already has Seth Rogen and Zac Efron onboard to star.

The film is about a family man (Seth Rogen), whose peaceful way of life is turned upside down by an obnoxious fraternity member (Zac Efron). The studio picked up the pitch from writers Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien for seven figures last summer.

Seth Rogen is also producing alongside longtime collaborator Evan Goldberg, with Andrew J. Cohen, Brendan O’Brien, and James Weaver executive producing. It isn’t known when it might shoot. (Source: THR)

Tom Cruise Eyes A Magnificent Seven Remake

May 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Since its financial difficulties, MGM has concentrated on putting together remakes and sequels to properties it already owns, and it’s continuing that run, as Variety reports that Tom Cruise is attached to MGM’s remake of The Magnificent Seven. The actor has apparently been interested in the project for quite some time, but don’t expect it to hit theaters anytime soon.

The studio does not have a director in place yet, although insiders claim they are quietly searching for a screenwriter. The remake is still years away from happening, but the actor’s involvement may attract filmmakers or other cast members to the project.

1960’s The Magnificent Seven was directed by John Sturges, and was a Western remake of Akira Kurosawa’s seminal classic Seven Samurai. The story centres on seven gunmen (Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn, Brad Dexter, and Horst Buchholz), who are hired by Mexican villagers to protect their land from the villainous Calvera (Eli Wallach).

It spawned the sequels Return of the Magnificent Seven in 1966, Guns of the Magnificent Seven in 1969, and The Magnificent Seven Ride! in 1972, along with a short-lived The Magnificent Seven TV series in 1998.

James McAvoy Joins Jessica Chastain In Eleanor Rigby

May 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Double features are rare things nowadays, but recently Jessica Chastain signed up for one and now James McAvoy has joined her in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Him and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Her, replacing the previously announced Joel Edgerton, according to THR.

The films follow a married couple in New York City, who deal with a emotional, life-altering experience. The story will be explored in both movies, one from the perspective of the restaurant owner husband (James McAvoy), and the second following the wife (Jessica Chastain), who goes back to college.

Ned Benson is writing and directing both films with Cassandra Kulukundis producing. Production on both movies is expected to begin in July.

Sherlock Holmes: The Hound Of The Baskervilles (DVD)

May 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Vasili Livanov, Vitali Solomin, Nikita Mihalkov
Director: Igor Maslennikov
Running Time: 145 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: May 21st, 2012

When we think of Soviet Era Russia, we don’t normally considering people under Communist rule settling down to watch a home-grown adaptation of Sherlock Holmes on television. However in the late 70s and early 80s director Igor Maslennikov made a series of TV versions of Conan Doyle’s tales about his famed consulting detective, which are surprisingly faithful. They also thankfully lack the feel of some Cold War era Russian entertainment (particularly if it’s set in the West), that the State is forcing it to push an anti-capitalist agenda.

After the death of Sir Henry Baskerville, his nephew Charles seeks the help of famed consulting detective Sherlock Holmes (Vasili Livanov), hoping he can use the man’s deductive reasoning skills to pull apart the suspicious circumstances surrounding Henry’s death. [Read more…]

Haywire (DVD)

May 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Running Time: 88 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 21st, 2012

With a cast including Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender and Michael Douglas, alongside newcomer and MMA fighter Gina Carano – not to mention that it’s directed by Steven Soderbergh – you’d expect something pretty special from Haywire. Sadly though the film doesn’t live up to expectations, beyond a few very good fight scenes.

Carano plays Mallory Kane, a covert operative for hire who does the jobs governments and companies don’t want to admit any part of. After a mission to Barcelona she heads to Dublin for another job and soon realises something is amiss and that she’s suddenly a target herself. Knowing she’s been double-crossed, Mallory must use all her skills to stay one step ahead of those who are out to get her and work out exactly what’s going on. [Read more…]

Alan Ball Takes On What’s The Matter With Margie

May 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Alan Ball won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for American Beauty, but since then he’s stayed in the world of TV, creating the likes of Six Feet Under and True Blood. Now he’s coming back to cinema, and not only has he written a new screenplay, but the gay writer is also planning to produce What’s The Matter With Margie?

Daniel Minahan, who has helmed numerous episodes of True Blood, will direct, and the lead has already been cast, with Deadline reporting that Elizabeth Banks is taking on the central role. The movie is about a bullied office-worker who, after years of abuse and mockery, finally snaps and decides to murder her tormentors. Although that sounds pretty dark, it’s being billed as a dark comedy, something Ball has proven he’s a master at over the years.

The film is currently being shopped to buyers in Canners, with an early 2013 shoot already pencilled in.

Crush Of The Day: Matthew Morrison

May 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Glee star Matthew Morrison hits cinemas on Friday in What To Expect When You’re Expecting, which seemed like a good excuse to us to gather some hot pics of the actor together and drool over them. While he only gets a little bit sexy as Will Schuester, he’s never been averse to showing a bit of skin, especially when he was a Broadway star, raising funds for charity. [Read more…]
