Disarm – Hooking up gets complicated in great gay short film

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Aussie short film Disarm won the My Queer Award at the Sydney Mardis Gras Festival in 2010, and you can see why. David Kinsman and Taris Tyler play a young guy and a slightly older man who hook up for casual sex. Things take an aggressive turn, but as one of them is about to leave, he’s drawn back in to what becomes an unexpected moment of understanding.

It’s a surprisingly perceptive look at hookup culture, taking into account its oneupmanship (everyone’s doing it so I need more shags – whether everyone is or not) as well as the emptiness and superficiality, all of which can hide a yearning for something – not that’s it’s necessarily that for everyone, but it certainly is for many. It’s also interesting in its discussion of how endless hookups being a possible sign of internalised homophobia and also how a sex partner is a full, complex person – something some men try to ignore.

Deep Cover – Spying goes gay in short film about equal marriage

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems that whatever the fabled ‘gay agenda’ is, it’s far more covert than we ever imagined, and the opponents of gay rights are just as sneaky. In Deep Cover it’s spy vs. spy, Mr & Mrs Smith style, with Leah working hard to stop gays from being allowed to get married, little realising that her boyfriend is actually gay and working against her! However they discover they have more in common than they thought, or do they?

Made by Jared Vincenti for his Boston University for his Master Of Fine Arts Degree, it’s great fun, so click above to take a look.

Second Masseur Makes John Travolta Sexual Assault Allegation

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Evidence of a pattern or just someone jumping on the bandwagon? We reported yesterday that an LA masseur had filed a $2 million lawsuit against John Travolta for sexual assault saying the actor touched his penis, asked for sex and masturbated in his presence. Now a second masseur has come forward making similar allegations and launching another lawsuit.

Once more the plaintiff is remaining anonymous, but according to the complaint (as reported by Radar Online), ‘“Travolta… indicated that he likes a lot of ‘glutes’ work, meaning a massage on his buttocks…While [the plantiff] was massaging near Travolta’s buttocks area, Travolta would open his legs and spread his butt cheeks open and had a full erection and would maneuver in a way to try to force Doe Plaintiff No. 2 to touch his anus.’

Radar says that the first complainant has commented that, “Having a second person come forward and say that he went through the same thing makes me feel vindicated.”

Although it’s still difficult to judge the truth of all this, with one complaint Travolta had a good chance of getting rid of it quickly and hoping everyone would forget it ever happened (adding it to the long list of allegations about his sexuality over the years), but two of them are more difficult to ignore.

There’s also the chance more complaints will now emerge, especially if this does turn out to be evidence of a pattern. At the moment though it’s impossible to tell what’s true and what’s not, although it should be added that the actor categorically denies all the allegations and says he can prove he wasn’t even in California when the first assault is said to have taken place.

Jeff, Who Lives At Home (Cinema)

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Susan Sarandon, Judy Greer, Rae Dawn Chong
Director: Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass
Running Time: 83 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 11th, 2012

A film starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms should be hilarious, right? Plus it’s directed by Jay and Mark Duplass, the brothers who had indie success with the likes of The Puffy Chair and Baghead, and are now making their first properly mainstream movie (the underwhelming Cyrus doesn’t really count). Sadly the results are less than the sum of the parts, with the movie being infuriating in parts and only sporadically entertaining.

As the title suggests, Jeff (Jason Segel) lives at home. He’s in his mid-thirties, has no job, doesn’t leave his basement all that often and spends most of his time trying to work out the ‘signs’ he feels are all around him, which will tell him what his destiny is if only he can interpret them properly. His mother (Susan Sarandon) asks him to go out and get some wood glue, however when he receives a wrong phone call for somebody called Kevin, he sees this as a sign, which leads him to get distracted from his task and ends up following someone with the word ‘Kevin’ on his basketball vest. Killer Joe Trailer – Matthew McConaughey turns contract killer

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Who’d have thought trying to kill your mum would cause suc trouble? When 22-year-old Chris (Emile Hirsch) finds himself in debt to a drug lord, he hires a hit man to dispatch his mother, whose $50,000 life insurance policy benefits his sister Dottie (Juno Temple). Chris finds Joe Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a creepy, crazy Dallas cop who moonlights as a contract killer. When Chris can’t pay Joe upfront, Joe sets his sight on Dottie as collateral for the job. Argo Trailer – First look at Ben Affleck’s thriller

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ben Affleck has proven himself very adept as a director and on the evidence of this trailer, he may have another success on his hands with Argo. Based on true events, the thriller Argo chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis–the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades. It involved going to Iran saying they were location scouting for a fake sci-fi flick in order to smuggle the hostages out. It’s out October 12th.

Avengers 2 Definitely In The Works

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In probably the least surprising development in the history of cinema, with The Avengers having made over $700 million in les than two weeks, Disney CEO Robert Iger has confirmed a sequel is in the works and that they hope to use the movie as a springboard for other Marvel franchises.

Iger told CNBC, “Marvel’s The Avengers isn’t just a film. It’s a franchise, from our perspective. It was helped by the success of the Iron Man movies and Captain America: The First Avenger. From the Avengers we get a chance to make Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 and hopefully another Marvel’s The Avengers movie.

“This one film, which was successful, over $700 million, as you said, as of last night, is going to get a number of other films and franchises. We see tremendous interest in products and in games for Marvel’s The Avengers. We have an ability to leverage what was a very fun film done by a great group of film makers into something much bigger for the company and the effect will be prolonged and that’s very, very exciting for us.”

However just because Iger says it, doesn’t mean he’s not going to have difficulty getting the full team back together. While the likes of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth have lengthy contracts that guarantee their participation in individual sequels and The Avengers 2, Robert Downey’s Jr. contract only runs through Iron Man 3. A new deal would have to be worked out for him, and if they want Joss Whedon back, he’ll also need a new contract. As Marvel is well known for refusing to pay as much as many others in the industry are prepared to, it may prove tough getting both of them back.

Jeff Wadlow Set To Direct Kick-Ass 2

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Kick-Ass failed to break the bank, it looked like any plans for a follow-up were sytmied, even though one has been in development. However its continued popularity on DVD and Blu-ray means that Universal is now looking to move forward with a sequel. Unfortunately though, Matthew Vaughn won’t direct, with Deadline reporting that Jeff Wadlow (Cry Wolf) will take the reins instead and also write the script.

Vaughn isn’t completely out of the picture, as he’ll produce and has been overseeing Wadlow’s screenplay, even if X-Men: First Class 2 mean he can’t direct himself. If everything works out, the movie will shoot in August. There’s a lot to sort out before then though, as all the cast need to be called back, with new deals needing to be sorted for Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

It’s not all locked in place yet, but as many people had written this one off, it’s looking far more likely than it has for a long time.

Rebecca Hall Replacing Jessica Chastain In Iron Man 3

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last month Jessica Chastain was in talks to join the cast of Iron Man 3, playing a scientist. However yesterday she took to Facebook to say that due to a ridiculously busy schedule she won’t be able to slot the Marvel movie in.

However the comic company and director Shane Black aren’t wasting any time (they can’t as the film starts shooting soon), as they’ve already offered the part to The Town’s Rebecca Hall, according to THR. No new details have been revealed about the role, although when Chastain was up for the part it was said she’d be a ‘a sexy scientist every bit as smart as Tony Stark’. Presumably she’ll be someone involved with the nanotechnology that’s said to be a central part of the plot.

Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Andy Lau, Guy Pearce and Don Cheadle also star, with filming set to begin later this month.

Nicole Kidman To Star In The Family Fang

May 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nicole Kidman has signed on to star in and produce an adaptation of Kevin Wilson’s best-selling book The Family Fang, which will reteam her with Rabbit Hole scribe David Lindsay-Abaire, who’s writing the screenplay.

The book is about two performance artist parents who always force their children to participate in their bizarre art piece. When their grown children return with crises of their own, the parents suck them into pulling off one final and daring act, even though the kids blame these performances for how badly their lives turned out.

Kidman was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Rabbit Hole, which David Lindsay-Abaire adapted from his own Pulitzer Prize-winning play. it isn’t known when this new movie might shoot, although it could potentially be fun. (Source: Deadline)
