Doctor Who Is Getting An Out Gay Companion For The First Time

April 1, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Doctor Who has had many companions over the years, but now, for the first time, he’s getting one that’s openly gay. Pearl Mackie, who’s playing new companion Billie Potts, will reveal her sexuality in the first couple of lines she speaks when the show returns to British TV for its tenth season (since its revival).

“It shouldn’t be a big deal in the 21st Century. It’s about time isn’t it?” says Mackie (via the BBC).

She adds, “That representation is important, especially on a mainstream show. It’s important to say people are gay, people are black – there are also aliens in the world as well so watch out for them. I remember watching TV as a young mixed race girl not seeing many people who looked like me, so I think being able to visually recognise yourself on screen is important. [Being gay] is not the main thing that defines her character – it’s something that’s part of her and something that she’s very happy and very comfortable with.”

Since the show returned to TV in 2005, there have been several gay and bisexual characters, such as Captain Jack (John Barrowman), River Song (Alex Kingston), as well as Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh) and her wife Jenny Flint (Catrin Stewart). However, while these characters have appeared in numerous episodes, they haven’t travelled with the Doctor full time.

The series returns on April 15th, and promises to be the last featuring Peter Capaldi in the title role.

Final King Arthur: Legend of the Sword Trailer – Charlie Hunnam takes on the legendary tale

April 1, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While it looked for a while like Warner Bros. thought they had a flop with King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword and were going to dump the movie in a graveyard slot, they seem to have warmed to the movie. It’s now getting a prime May release date, and the hype is growing with the release of a new trailer.

Charlie Hunnam, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Djimon Hounsou, Aidan Gillen, Jude Law and Eric Bana star in the movie, which will follow the King in ‘an iconoclastic take on the classic Excalibur myth, tracing Arthur’s journey from the streets to the throne. When the child Arthur’s father is murdered, Vortigern (Jude Law), Arthur’s uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life is turned upside down and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy…whether he likes it or not.”

The movie is set for release in May. The movie was originally set to be the start of a whole Knights Of The Roundtable franchise, with each movie focussing on a different knight. At the moment that’s been put on the backburner, but expect it to be resurrected if Legend Of The Sword is a success. [Read more…]

All Male, All Nude Trailer – Gerald McCullouch takes us inside a legendary gay male strip joint

April 1, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

You might know Gerald McCullouch from the Bear City movies, or as one of the lab techs in CSI. However, he’s now following in the footsteps of Joe Manganiello and directing a documentary about male strippers.

McCullouch has set his sights on America’s only all nude, all male, gay strip club, Swinging Richards, which isn’t, as you might expect in New York or Los Angeles, but is instead in the heart of the Bible Belt, in Atlanta.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From part of the creative team behind the award-winning E! TV show “F.Y.E.!”, All Male, All Nude. is a cutting-edge journey into the taboo world of male stripping. The men living this life can’t be boxed in nor can those who pay to watch them strip. Straight men, gay men, bi-sexual men and those who are gay only when the money is right support themselves and, sometimes their families, by dancing nude for a diverse clientele of gay men, straight women, business men in town for work, married couples and everyone in between.

‘The men range from their 20’s up to their 40’s and have a weight room and locker room as their home base for the evening while they connect with customers in a deft money making venture. Each relishes, defends, enjoys and abhors their career choice and looks back on life’s lessons that led them to where they are now.’

Take a look at the trailer below. The film will debut at Out On Film in Atlanta on April 1st. [Read more…]

New War For The Planet Of The Apes Trailer – Caesar goes into battle for survival

March 31, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes surprised many when it turned out to be a pretty good origin story. Then the franchise really upped the game with the excellent Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. That means the next instalment, War Of The Planet Of The Apes, has a lot to live up to. And from the evidence of this new trailer, it might be a rather dark tale.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES stars Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn and Toby Kebbell and is directed by Matt Reeves.

‘In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

‘WAR OF THE PLANET OF THE APES is releases in UK cinemas July 2017.’ [Read more…]

The Book Of Henry Trailer – Colin Trevorrow moves from dinosaurs to drama/thriller territory

March 31, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Colin Trevorrow had a monster hit with Jurassic World, but rather than staying in the world of dinosaurs or immediately making another mega-budget movie, he decided to helm The Book Of Henry. Not the trailer has arrived, which starts off suggesting this will be a quirky family drama, before veering into surprisingly dark thriller territory.

The Henry of the title is an 11-year-old boy, living with his mother (Naomi Watts) and brother. He realises the girl living next door, Christina, may be in danger from her stepfather, and so starts writing a book about how he’s going to rescue her. Eventually his mother gets involved, but they know it will be difficult to do anything, as Christina’s stepdad is the police commissioner.

Jacob Tremblay, Sarah Silverman and Lee Pace also star. Take a look at the trailer below. The Book of Henry will be in cinemas this summer. [Read more…]

War Machine Trailer – Brad Pitt is going to war for Netflix

March 31, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Netflix has shown they can take on television at their own game (something most thought was impossible a few years ago), and now they want to show Hollywood they can make really big movies too. This year they’ve got the likes of Bright, starring Will Smith, as well as War Machine, with Brad Pitt. The trailer for the latter has now arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An absurdist war story for our times, writer-director David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) recreates a U.S. General’s roller-coaster rise and fall as part reality, part savage parody – raising the specter of just where the line between them lies today. His is an exploration of a born leader’s ultra-confident march right into the dark heart of folly. At the story’s core is Brad Pitt’s sly take on a successful, charismatic four-star general who leapt in like a rock star to command NATO forces in Afghanistan, only to be taken down by a journalist’s no-holds-barred exposé.

‘The Netflix original film is inspired by the book The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan by the late journalist Michael Hastings. Joining Pitt in War Machine is a highly decorated cast including Tilda Swinton, Ben Kingsley, Anthony Michael Hall, Topher Grace, Will Poulter, Lakeith Stanfield, Emory Cohen, John Magaro, RJ Cyler, Alan Ruck, Scoot McNairy and Meg Tilly. Ian Bryce and Plan B’s Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Brad Pitt serve as producers. James Skotchdopole serves as executive producer. The film will be released on Netflix on May 26, 2017.’ [Read more…]

Johnny Depp Attached To King Of The Jungle, About John McAfee

March 31, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

McAfee is still one of the big names in antivirus software, although Intel, which currently owns the company, may wish the original founder, John McAfee hadn’t named the company after himself. That’s because in recent year’s he’s become well known for his love of shooting, women, and for getting caught up in a murder.

Now Deadline reports Johnny Depp may play McAfee in a movie called King Of The Jungle. The film will follow McAfee ‘as he takes a Wired magazine writer on a darkly comic Apocalypse Now-like tour at his Belize compound, a trip filled with paranoia, machine guns, sex and murder’. The murder in question was of McAfee’s neighbour, Gregory Viant Faull, who was found shot dead in his home in Belize. McAfee, who was already suspected of drug offences by the Belize authorities, then went on the run rather than being questioned about it. McAfee suggested he was afraid of being railroaded, while Belize’s prime minister said he was “extremely paranoid, even bonkers”.

Glenn Ficarra & John Requa will direct a script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. The film is currently looking for backers.

Joss Whedon May Write & Direct A Batgirl Movie

March 31, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Making a big leap from the world of Marvel to DC, Joss Whedon is in talks to write and direct a movie based around Batgirl, according to Variety. Having directed the two Avengers movies, as well as helping to created Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., Whedon has been instrumental in the success of Marvel’s cinematic universe.

Warner/DC will be hoping he can bring some of the same magic to their movies, which have struggled with critics and failed to ignite the type of fan fervour Marvel has managed.

There’s no info on what direction Whedon might want to take the character, or indeed when we might see the movie. However, it’s likely he will be working with the most iconic Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner James Gordon, who secretly dons a costume to fight crime. She was first introduced in 1967 both in the comics in in the Batman TV series.

Whedon’s film is likely to involve other characters from the Gotham universe, and will also connect to other films in the DC universe.

Smurfs: The Lost Village (Cinema Review) – The little blue creatures are back and totally animated

March 29, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Danny Pudi, Demi Lovato, Jack McBrayer, Joe Manganiello, Julia Roberts
Director: Kelly Asbury
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 31st 2017 (UK)

After a couple of part live-action outings, Sony has decided that a bit of a reboot and a fully animated adventure is the direction they want to take The Smurfs. They’d have probably done better to have gone this root from the beginning, as the little blue creatures never seemed like they fit in the real world, and this fully animated adventure allows it to be closer to the tales of Peyo and the early 80s Hannah-Barbera cartoon.

As well as the fact there’s no Neil Patrick Harris or Hank Azaria, the voices of most of the Smurfs have changed too. Not that kids will care though, and quite frankly why they decided they needed names like Demi Lovato, Joe Manganiello and Julia Roberts involved is a mystery, as it’s not like anyone is going to buy a ticket because of it. It Trailer – The Clown monster is back devouring kids, in the form of Bill Skarsgard

March 29, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After a poster and a tease yesterday, Warner has released a full trailer for their new take on Stephen King’s classic It. While many thought 26-year-old Bill Skargard was too young to play the story’s creepy clown, he certainly seems to have the right menacing look and feel in this slightly unnerving trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘New Line Cinema’s horror thriller “IT,” directed by Andrés Muschietti (“Mama”), is based on the hugely popular Stephen King novel of the same name, which has been terrifying readers for decades. When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, a group of young kids are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.

‘“IT” stars Bill Skarsgård (“Allegiant,” TV’s “Hemlock Grove”) as the story’s central villain, Pennywise. An ensemble of young actors also star in the film, including Jaeden Lieberher (“Midnight Special”), Jeremy Ray Taylor (“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip”), Sophia Lillis (“37”), Finn Wolfhard (TV’s “Stranger Things”), Wyatt Oleff (“Guardians of the Galaxy”), Chosen Jacobs (upcoming “Cops and Robbers”), Jack Dylan Grazer (“Tales of Halloween”) and Nicholas Hamilton (“Captain Fantastic”).’

It will be released on September 8th, 2017. [Read more…]

New Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Trailer – Dane DeHaan & Cara Delevingne star in Luc Besson’s sci-fi

March 29, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Luc Besson took us into a rather unique sci-fi world with The Fifth Element, which got a very mixed reaction on its cinema release, but has since grown more than a cult reputation. Now the director is going back to hard sci-fi with Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which has just released a new trailer. It’s certainly got an impressive visual style.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Rooted in the classic graphic novel series, Valerian and Laureline- visionary writer/director Luc Besson advances this iconic source material into a contemporary, unique and epic science fiction saga.

‘Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

‘Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.’

The film is due out this summer. [Read more…]

An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth To Power Trailer – Al Gore has more to tell us about Climate Change

March 29, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It must be coincidence, but the trailer for the follow-up to Al Gore’s Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth has popped up on the day Trump has rolled back numerous environmental protections put in place by the Obama administration. The first film was a major success, and it seem Gore has more to tell us.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A decade after AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH brought climate change into the heart of popular culture, comes the riveting and rousing follow-up that shows just how close we are to a real energy revolution. Vice President Al Gore continues his tireless fight traveling around the world training an army of climate champions and influencing international climate policy. Cameras follow him behind the scenes – in moments both private and public, funny and poignant — as he pursues the inspirational idea that while the stakes have never been higher, the perils of climate change can be overcome with human ingenuity and passion.’

The movie will be in cinemas this summer. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]
