The Skeleton Twins (DVD Review)

March 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Luke Wilson, Ty Burrell, Boyd Holbrook
Director: Craig Johnson
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 16th 2015 (UK)

With SNL alumni Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader in the lead roles, you could be forgiven for thinking this would be a riotous gross-out laugh-fest, but right from the first few scenes The Skeleton Twins sets itself to be something far more indie dramedy.

Hader and Wiig are twins Milo and Maggie who aren’t completely estranged but have severely drifted apart after he left for LA to become an actor. Things aren’t going to well though, as the movie opens with Maggie narrowly escaping death and Milo attempting suicide. He heads back to their hometown to stay with Maggie and try to start over, but they soon discover that reuniting isn’t easy and that neither of them is in a place in their lives where they feel they should be. A Walk Among the Tombstones Trailer – Liam Neeson turns private eye

May 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When A Walk Among The Tombstones was announced, it sounded like Liam Neeson would be going back into Taken mode. However this trailer suggests some a little more dramatic and interesting.

The film is ‘Based on Lawrence Block’s bestselling series of mystery novels, A Walk among the Tombstones stars Liam Neeson as Matt Scudder, an ex-NYPD cop who now works as an unlicensed private investigator operating just outside the law. When Scudder reluctantly agrees to help a heroin trafficker (Dan Stevens) hunt down the men who kidnapped and then brutally murdered his wife, the PI learns that this is not the first time these men have committed this sort of twisted crime…nor will it be the last. Blurring the lines between right and wrong, Scudder races to track the deviants through the backstreets of New York City before they kill again.’

Scott Frank (The Lookout) writes and directs, with the likes of Boyd Holbrook and Dan Stevens co-starring. [Read more…]

Jai Courtney & Boyd Holbrook On Final List For Terminator: Genesis’ Kyle Reese

February 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boyd-holbrook2For the past couple of months Paramount has been busy putting together the cast for Terminator: Genesis. Now Deadline reports that the role of Kyle Reese is down to two actors, Jai Courtney and Boyd Holbrook.

Both actors were on a shortlist revealed last month, alongside Sam Reid (The Railway Man), Wilson Bethel (Hart of Dixie) and newcomer Tom Cocquerel. However it now appears the decision is between Courtney and Holbrook.

Michael Biehn played Kyle Reese in the original 1984 The Terminator, who was a soldier sent back from the future to protect resistance leader John Connor’s mother Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) from Arnie’s killer cyborg. He ends up becoming John’s father. Anton Yelchin played the role in Terminator Salvation.

For the new film, Jason Clarke will be John Connor, with Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor. Arnold Schwarzenegger is also onboard in a currently unconfirmed role whose exact role has not been confirmed. Due to the ages of the actors, it seems like the movie will take place both in the future and some years earlier in the past, possibly before (or simultaneous to) the events of the first movie.

Alan Taylor is directing from a screenplay by Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogridis. it’s not clear when it will shoot.

Jai Courtney, Boyd Holbrook, Wilson Bethel & More Testing For Terminator: Genesis

Emilia Clarke recently signed up to play Sarah Connor in the upcoming Teminator: Genesis, and now the casting people have turned their attention to the person who’ll be Kyle Reece – John Connor’s father, as played by Michael Biehn in the first film and Anton Yelchin in Terminator Salvation.

According to Variety, five actors are currently testing for the part – Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard), Sam Reid (The Railway Man), Boyd Holbrook (Out of the Furnace), Wilson Bethel (Hart of Dixie), and relative newcomer Tom Cocquerel.

Paramount also apparently wanted Nicholas Hoult and Garrett Hedlund to audition, but they weren’t interested for one reason or another.

Thor: The Dark World’s Alan Taylor will direct. No plot details have officially been revealed, but it seems clear there will be an element of time travel involved. It’s believed it will be set before the first movie, as well as taking us into the future during the war between mankind and Skynet. It would suggest some rewriting of the Terminator chronology will take place, but we’ll have to see.

Expect to hear who has the role soon.

Boyd Holbrook Up For Jane Got A Gun & Little Accidents

June 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boyd-holbrook2Boyd Holbrook’s star is certainly rising. He’s popped up in The Host and Behind The Candelabra, and will soon be seen in The Skeleton Twins, Terrence Malick’s new movie, Out Of The Furnace and A Walk Among The Tombstones.

Now he’s got two more film lined up, as TheWrap reports he’ll be part of Jane Got A Gun and Little Accidents.

The rather troubled Jane Got A Gun (which has seen numerous cast and director changes just as production was beginning). Natalie Portman stars as the title character, whose husband (Noah Emmerich) comes home riddled with bullet wounds. When the band of outlaws of shot him comes to Jane’s farm to finish the job, she seeks help from a former lover (Joel Edgerton) to ward off these gunmen. Ewan McGregor is playing the leader of the bad guys, with Holbrook as his younger brother.

Little Accidents meanwhile is based on Sara Colangelo’s award-winning 2010 short of the same name. Boyd will be the sole survivor of a mine accident that kills 12 men in a small town. Elizabeth Banks is set to play a woman whose son goes missing during the tragedy and turns to Holbrook for support.

Out Actor Cheyenne Jackson Joins Liberace Biopic

June 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

HBO is certainly staking a claim to be able to compete with Hollywood, getting some of the best names in the business for their TV output, both in terms of series and films. That said, they’re really taking things up a notch with their Liberace biopic, Behind The Candelabra, which Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh is directing.

The film already has Michael Douglas as Liberace, and Matt Damon as his long-time live-in lover, Scott Thorson (although Liberace denied publicly to his dying day that he was gay). Dan Aykroys is also onboard as the flamboyant pianist’s manager, with Debbie Reynolds as Liberace’s mother.

Now the cast has grown once more, as The Playlist reports that gay (and exceedingly hot) actor Cheyenne Jackson has signed on, as have Rob Lowe and Boyd Holbrook. Lowe will play a plastic surgeon in the movie and Holbrook will be one of Liberace’s youthful lovers. Unfortunately Jackson’s role hasn’t been revealed. Variety adds that Scott Bakula will also be in the movie, playing Bob Black, the choreographer who introduced Liberace to Thorson.

Shooting is due to begin this summer. While it will first play on TV in the US, the plan is for it to get a cinema release in other countries (although it may also initially play on TV in the UK, depending on the details of HBO’s exclusive deal with Sky).

Diane Kruger, Boyd Holbrook & Chandler Canterbury Join The Host

January 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 hits cinemas at the end of the year, it won’t be the end for adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s books on the big screen, as The Host is gearing up to shoot, with Andrew Niccol directing.

Saoirse Ronan, William Hurt, Max Iron and Jake Abel have already been cast, and they’ve now been joined by Diane Kruger, Boyd Holbrook and Chandler Canterbury, according to Variety.

The film is about parasitic alien creatures called Souls who can take over a human body. Saoirse Ronan stars as a young human soldier who is taken over by a Soul dubbed The Wanderer. While human personalities are normally subdued by their hosts, Ronan’s character puts up a fight, refusing to let go of her identity.

The Wanderer becomes obsessed with the soldier’s memories, and sets out to find her boyfriend and lost brother. Diane Kruger will portray another human with a soul inside called The Seeker, who tracks down The Wanderer. Chandler Canterbury will play Ronan’s younger brother, while Holbrook will be Jake Abel’s macho brother.

The film is due to start shooting at the end of the month, with a release already set for March 2013.
