Take A Look At The Entire X-Men: Days Of Future Past Cast Together At Comic-Con

July 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

X-Men-days-of-future-past-cast-photoFor the X-Men panel at Comic-Con, Fox decided the best thing to do was bring the entire main cast of the upcoming X-Men: Days Of Future Past together, which led to the image above, tweeted by director Bryan Singer.

There was also footage and info about the movie, including confirmation that it’s Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine who’ll be the one travelling from a bleak, dystopian future where mutants have been rounded up and are monitored by the robotic sentinels. An older Xavier and Magneto (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen), send him back to the 1970s to convince their younger selves (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) they must do something to prevent this future from ever happening.

The movie hits cinemas summer 2014.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past Character Portraits & Logo Emerge

July 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With X-Men: Days Of Future Past mixing up mutants from the original trilogy with their First Class counterparts, there’s a lot of interest in the film. Now some character portraits have emerged (apparently first on the X-Men Tumblr, although they now seem to have been removed, and then on ComingSoon).

They show us Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman and Daniel Cudmore back in the X-Men fold, along with out first look at Omar Sy as Bishop, and First Class’ Nicholas Hoult and Lucas Till.

The film’s Comic-Con panel takes place on Saturday, so hopefully there’ll be more news from that. Click on the pics below for larger versions. It’s out in cinemas May 2014.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Teaser Trailer – Including our first good look at the dragon

June 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The teaser trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is much what you’d expect. Indeed it was always in danger of seeming exactly like all the promos for the first film, so it makes sure it adds in a few new things, mostly our first looks at Orlando Bloom returning to the role of Legolas, as well as Evangeline Lilly as the elf Tauriel and a decent glimpse of the evil, treasure-loving dragon, Smaug (who’ll be voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch).

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece “The Hobbit”, by J.R.R. Tolkien, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” continues the adventures of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

It hits cinemas on December 13th.

Ian McKellen Says Margaret Thatcher ‘Misjudged The Future’ Over Gay Rights

April 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ian-mckellenIan McKellen has posted his own obituary of Margaret Thatcher on his website, hoping to highlight one aspect of her Prime Ministership that he feels has been overlooked in the coverage of her death – Section 28. It’s something close to his heart, as it was the effect of the law, which banned the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality and ‘pretended family relations’ in UK schools, that prompted him to publicly reveal his sexuality.

He also co-founded Stonewall as a response to the legislation, in the hope of overturning Section 28 and fighting against the other anti-gay policies and ideas of the Thatcher years. Section 28 effectively banned any mention of homosexuality in schools until it was repealed in 2000. Although, as KcKellen notes, ‘in her dotage, Baroness Thatcher was led by her supporters into the House of Lords to vote against Section 28’s repeal: her final contribution to UK politics.’

He adds, ‘Thatcher misjudged the future when, according to her deputy chief whip, she “threw a piece of red meat (Section 28) to her right-wing wolves”. Some of these beasts survive her, albeit de-fanged.’

However McKellen is pleased that despite the anti-gay rhetoric and policies of the Thatcher years, the world has changed, and that ‘She dies too early to oppose Parliament’s inevitable acceptance of same–gender marriage.’

He does include a perhaps unexpected footnote though, especially considering how he fought against her policies when she was Prime Minister. He says that as he was watching TV and waiting for her to leave Downing Street for the last time in 1990 – after she’d been ousted by her own party – he got a phone called from Thatcher’s office, with an official telling him, “The Prime Minister has been trying to reach you. She has it in mind (so the officialese goes) to recommend that the Queen give you a knighthood.”‘

‘Then, just as I put down the phone, the big black shiny door opened and the Thatchers emerged, she crying a little. It was if she had kept the world waiting until she knew for sure that I’d been contacted. Of course not. But nevertheless, I suppose the very last thing Thatcher did as prime minster was to organise my knighthood.’

You can find all McKellen’s comments over at his website.

Vicious Trailer – Take a look at Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi’s new gay sitcom

April 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

British sitcoms can’t normally claim major international star power, but Vicious brings together gay acting legends Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi and also features the likes of Frances De La Tour (who no Brits will recognise as Harry Potter’s Madame Maxime) and Misfits star Iwan Rheon.

The sitcom sees McKellen and Jacobi as an ageing gay couple, Freddie and Stuart, living in London’s Covent Garden, who still aren’t ‘out’ despite being together for 48 years. De La Tour plays the couple’s feisty best friend Violet, while Rheon is their new neighbour, Ash.

The series was co-created by Will & Grace writer Gary Janetti and award-winning playwright Mark Ravenhill, with Ed Bye (Red Dwarf) directing. There’s no definite air date set for the show yet, but it’s expected to his UK screens towards the end on April. [Read more…]

Ian McKellen To Officiate At Patrick Stewart’s Wedding

March 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ian-mckellenWhile Sir Ian McKellen is one of the world’s best known actors, he’s revealed he’s got a bit of a sideline officiating at wedding. He now said that he’ll be the one marrying Patrick Stewart and his fiancée, Sunny Ozell. Who would have though Professor X would let Magneto marry him?

Ian revealed the news on The Jonathan Ross Show, saying, ”I’m going to marry Patrick. I am going to officiate at his wedding.”

Unsurprisingly he was then asked how he it was legal for him to officiate the ceremony.: “I don’t know,” he said. “But in Massachusetts, in the middle of America somewhere, you get a friend along, and I read out the words, and Sunny [Ozell] and Patrick will then be married… I’ve done it once before with two guys having a civil partnership. I was crying my eyes out.”

Massachusetts has laws which say that for a $25 dollar feel, the Governor can give someone one-time permission to officiate at a wedding. From what McKellen has said, it’s likely someone else will be the official, while he reads the words.

McKellen was then asked: “What do you wear when you officiate at a wedding?”, saying that the last time, he wore “A white gown which I bought in India. You mustn’t upstage the bride.”

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Cinema)

December 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Ken Stott, Andy Serkis
Director: Peter Jackson
Running Time: 169 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: December 13th 2012

After the gargantuan success of Lord Of The Rings, it was always going to be an uphill battle for The Hobbit to live up to those films’ critical success. That’s already been proved by the rather mixed reaction of the early reviews for An Unexpected Journey.

However, while there are definitely a few issues with the movie, for my money this is a largely successful trip back to Middle Earth, although as with Peter Jackson’s earlier fantasy movies, we’re only really going to be able to judge things once the final movie is released (people may have liked Fellowship and Two Towers, but if Return Of The King had been a load of old balls, it would have completely ruined the entire trilogy, as they’re essentially one very, very long film). British Legends Of Stage & Screen (DVD)

December 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Glenda Jackson, Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, Claire Bloom, Michael Gambon
Director: Anthony Fabian
Running Time: 360 mins
Certificate: E
Release Date: December 10th 2012

At the end of British Legends Of Stage & Screen I got the distinct impression that you weren’t allowed to be an actor from the 1940s to the 1980s unless Sir Laurence Olivier said so. I’m sure it wasn’t quite as strict as that, but of the eights actors interviewed here, seven have Olivier based stories and six owe a large chunk of their early success to him. The only ones who don’t are Glenda Jackson and Christopher Lee, but even he claims to have snuck onto the set of Hamlet and hung around in the background. [Read more…]

Great Hobbit 13-Minute Featurette Arrives

December 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s less than a week until The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits cinemas. There’s a huge amount of anticipation and for those who can’t get enough on the film, there’s a great new 13-minute featurette, which includes plenty of new footage from the movie, as well as some interesting behind-the-scenes info on the making of the movie.

The movie has been getting slightly mixed notices – no one’s said it’s bad, but that perhaps it doesn’t quite hit the ridiculously high bar set by Lord Of The Ring, although it will be difficult to fully judge it until we’ve seen all three movies. We’ll all get to see what we think on December 13th.

First Hobbit: There & Back Again Image Sees Orlando Bloom Back As Legolas

December 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve had quite a few images from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which hits cinemas on December 13th, but now we’re jumping forward to the third film, The Hobbit: There & Back Again, with the first pic from that movie arriving via EW. And it’ll be exciting for all those who swooned over Legolas in Lord Of The Rings, as it shows Orlando Bloom back in Middle Earth for more elf-ness.

As many will know, Legolas isn’t in the book, so what’s he doing in the movie? Peter Jackson says, “He’s [elven king] Thranduil’s son, and Thranduil is one of the characters in The Hobbit, and because elves are immortal it makes sense Legolas would be part of the sequence in the Woodland Realm.” In the pic Legolas is one of the Hobbit trilogy’s new human faces, Laketown warrior Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans).

EW also has a rather cool new Unexpected Journey shot, showing Gandalf meeting the Goblin King (played by Dame Edna herself, Barry Humphries).
