Dustin Hoffman & Judi Dench Up For Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot

June 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

judi-denchYou might expect a Roald Dahl adaptation to be looking for young faces, but Esio Trot is slightly different, and so the first names attached to a movie version are Dustin Hoffman and Judi Dench, according to Showbiz 411.

Irish director Dearbhla Walsh is behind this one, taking on Dahl’s sweet but slight tale (which will presumably be expanded for the screen. It follows Mr. Hoppy, a bashful older gent who falls is in love with Ms Silver, the woman who lives underneath him. She has a tiny pet tortoise that she wishes would grow larger, and so Mr. Hoppy comes up with a scheme to help.

It’s the sort of quirky tale that could make for an entertaining movie, and it will be interesting to see if they make this as a children’s film or try for something a little more grown-up.

Skyfall Becomes UK’s Highest Grossing Box Office Hit Ever

December 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just a couple of months ago if you’d asked most people whether they thought the 23rd film in a 50 year old franchise wouldn’t just become the biggest James Bond movie ever, but also the highest grossing movie in UK film history, they would have given an emphatic ‘no’.

However that’s exactly what’s happened, as in just over a month Skyfall has taken £94,277,612 in the UK, overtaking Avatar’s lifetime gross £94,025,632. With the film still doing good business, it could well become the first movie to make £100 million just in Britain and Ireland.

In response to this fantastic news, producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli commented, “We’re overwhelmed with gratitude to the cinema-going audiences in the UK who have made Skyfall the highest grossing film of all time. We are very proud of this film and thank everybody, especially Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes, who have contributed to its success.”

It’s an astonishing achievement, and while the film is undoubtedly good, it’s tough to pinpoint exactly why everyone’s gone so 007 crazy. They undoubtedly have though, and it’s great good to have a British born movie on top of the UK all time list.

Judi Dench & Steve Coogan Take On Stephen Frears’ LGBT-themed Philomena

September 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Stephen Frears is one of the most eclectic director’s around, having taken on everything from Dangerous Liaisons and the Queen, to the likes of High Fidelity, Tamara Drewe and Accidental Hero. However he first made his name in the movie world with the 1985 gay-themed hit, My Beautiful Launderette. Now he’s lined up a new movie which also has LGBT-interest, Philomena, and Variety reports that Dame Judi Dench and Steve Coogan have signed up to star.

The movie is based on the Martin Sixsmith true story book, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee: A Mother, Her Son and a 50 Year Search. The plot follows Lee, who teams up with Sixsmith to try and find the illegitimate son that she was forced to give up while living in a Catholic home for unmarried mothers in Ireland. Meanshile, it turned out that her son had grown up as Michael Hess, and become a Republican politician and closeted homosexual who had been diagnosed with AIDS. With the knowledge that he was dying, he traveled to Ireland to try and get the nuns at the Catholic home to reveal his mother’s identity.

Coogan has been involved with the project for a long time and even co-wrote the film with Jeff Pope. He will play the Sixsmith, while Dench will be Lee. Coogan commented, “The film is a comic tragedy or a tragic comedy. It’s about two very different people, at different stages of their lives, who help each other and show that there is laughter even in the darkest places.”

Shooting starts next month in London, Northern Ireland and Washington, D.C.

New Skyfall Trailer – James Bond is back (after being dead for a bit)

July 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s all action in the new Skyfall trailer, which suggest 007 is back on track after the messy blip that was Quantum Of Solace. It appears Bond is believed dead and M is in a bit of trouble. However the thankfully still breathing 007 is called back into action, meeting his new Q (Ben Whishaw), going up against a very blond Javier Bardem and watching an awful lot of things explode. It’s looking very cool and will hit UK cinemas on October 26th, before it hits the US on November 9th.

The Shakespeare Collection (DVD)

July 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ian McKellen, Judi Dench, Christopher Neame, Ann Hasson
Director: Various
Certificate: PG
Release Date: July 16th 2012

Once Upon A Time ITV didn’t just produce The Only Way Is Essex and The Only Way Is Downton Abbey, they also made adaptations of Shakespeare (or at least Thames Television did). This box set collects four of them together – King Lear, Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet and Twelfth Night – all shot in the 70s and 80s. Some are actually filmed stagings of theatrical productions of the plays, so for example, Twelfth Night is Kenneth Branagh’s 1987 version from his Renaissance Theatre Company, while Macbeth is the 1979 RSC take starring Ian McKellen and Judi Dench. New Skyfall Video Blog – Take a look at the return of the Aston DB5

July 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m not sure if normal people care about James Bond’s cars as much as car marketers do, but there’s little doubt 007’s automobiles have a long history and have got a lot of publicity. Now it’s time to unveil Skyfall’s main auto, the Aston DB5, which made it debut on Top Gear. Skyfall opens at cinemas across the UK on 26th October 2012, and sees Bond’s loyalty to M tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (DVD)

June 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson
Director: John Madden
Running Time: 118 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: June 25th, 2012

Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Celia Imrie, Penelope Wilton, Dev Patel, Ronald Pickup – if you assemble a cast like that, you could get them to read the phone book and it would be entertaining. It would be tough to get them to make something that wasn’t at least worth a look, and thankfully although The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a relatively slight tale, it’s never less than charming.

Dench, Smith, Nighty, Wilkinson, Imrie, Wilton and Pickup play a group of aging Brits, who for one reason and another respond to an advert for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The ad promises an Indian idyll where retirees can live out their days in luxury that brings to mind the days of the Raj. After a rather problematic journey to the hotel, the reality turns out to be rather different than what was promised, with the hotel falling to bits and little of the advertised luxury. [Read more…]

Skyfall Teaser Trailer – Daniel Craig is looking stylish

May 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We had the first poster at the end of last week and now the official teaser trailer for Skyfall has dropped, and if the rest of the film is anything like as stylish as this first look, we’re in for a real treat. It really is a fantastic looking promo for the movie. The one thing it lacks is much info on the plot, although it does reveal that the Skyfall title refers to some sort of job 007 is assigned. The film will begin its worldwide roll-out later this year in the UK and Ireland on October 26th and in North America on November 9th.

Loads Of New Skyfall Pics Emerge

April 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One problem Jame Bond movies have when it comes to still images is that one 007 flick looks much the same as the next, except for the occasional change of head in the main role, different cars and a fresh supporting cast. However people still like to look at them. A new batch has arrived online from Skyfall, featuring Daniel Criag looking moody and firing some guns, as well as some of out first views of Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Judi Dench and more in the movie. The film is out in October, but take a look above and below for the new pics.
