CSI: New York – Season 9 (DVD)

May 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Gary Sinise, Sela Ward, Carmine Giovanazzo, Ann Belknap, Hill Harper
Director: Various
Running Time: 710 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 12th 2014

After nine years CSI: New York comes to an end with the final 17 episodes. Thankfully though, while most shows simply get yanked off the air, they knew this would be the end for the Big Apple’s finest crime scene investigators, giving them time to wrap some things up and give the characters a proper send-off.

That’s particularly true for the show’s central character, Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise), who finds romance in Season 9 – which is certainly fitting considering the series started with Mac still reeling from his wife’s death on 9/11. [Read more…]

Bates Motel – Season 1 (Blu-ray)

February 3, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore, Max Thieriot, Olivia Cooke, Mike Vogel
Director: Various
Running Time: 440 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: February 3rd 2014

As with Hannibal, the moment Bates Motel was announced, you could feel critics getting ready to seethe and denounce the series as a travesty, as well as preparing to set up an underground webcam so we could all watch Hitchcock spinning in his grave. However with both shows they ended up eating their words.

Bates Motel is a prequel to Psycho, but it smartly ensures it can’t be too directly compared to the 1960 classic as it’s set in the modern world, although a slightly heightened world where everyone looks like they could have just fallen out of the 1950s. It also makes sure it pays homage to its source in both its setting (the motel and house are an exact replica of the original) and central characters, while doing enough to strike out on its own so you’re not just wishing years would pass and Marion Crane would to turn up at Norman’s motel. Looking (TV Preview) Is it the gay show we’ve been waiting for?

January 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Director: Andrew Haigh, Various
Running Time: 30 mins per episode

Having premiered in the US on January 19th on HBO, the much-anticipated show about a group of gay friends in San Francisco makes its UK bow on Sky Atlantic on January 27th at 10.35pm. So after all the hype, was it worth it? The answer is yes, but perhaps not if you just judge it from the first episode. If you stick with it though (I’ve been lucky enough to see the first four episodes) it proves to be something well worth watching. [Read more…]

Wentworth Prison – Season 1 (DVD)

November 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Danielle Cormack, Nicole da Silva, Leeanna Walsman, Kate Atkinson
Director: Various
Running Time: 520 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: November 4th 2013

There’s no doubt that Prisoner Cell Block H (originally just called Prisoner and known as Caged Women in Canada) is an Aussie camp classic series. With its wobbly sets, OTT plots, women calling each other ‘slaaaaags’, evil prison warders and villains with upturned collars, it gained fans around the globe who loved its women’s prison antics, but also appreciated that it was a show that really cared about its characters. Grimm – Season 2 (Blu-ray)

October 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: David Giuntoli, Russell Hornsby, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz
Director: Various
Running Time: 951 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 21st 2013

Grimm is one of those shows where the premise is so silly that it really ought to be dreadful, but it’s actually a lot of fun. It’s helped by some good actors and a tone that manages to be slightly contrary, as the characters take the set-up very seriously, but there’s still a sense it knows it’s often a bit daft. American Horror Story: Asylum (DVD)

October 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Zachary Quinto, Jessica Lange, Lily Rabe
Director: Various
Running Time: 531 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: October 21st 2013

Rather than having a continuing story, American Horror Story has decided to go the more interesting route of telling a completely different tale each season, although with many of the same actors (but playing new character). So while the first season was set in a haunted house in LA, Asylum takes us to the Briarcliff asylum.

We start out in the present day, when a man (Maroon 5’s Adam Levine) and his girlfriend are poking around the ruins of Briarcliff when they are confronted by an incarnation of the psychotic serial killer, Bloodyface. We then flash back to the 1960s, when Briarcliff in still in operation, presided over by the terrifying nun, Sister Jude (Jessica Lange). [Read more…]

Chicago Fire – Season 1 (DVD)

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jesse Spencer, Taylor Kinney, Monica Raymund, Lauren German, Charlie Bartlett
Director: Various
Running Time: 1080 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 14th 2013

I’m not sure why American TV thinks Chicago is mainly about the emergency services, but after the likes of ER, Chicago Hope and The Chicago Code comes Chicago Fire, following the theme that residents of the city need saving an awful lot. As you may have guessed, the series follows a group of firefighters, in this case the men and women of Firehouse 51.

The team includes Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), who leads the team but is dealing with relationship problems and a mother who’s locked up for killing his father. Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) meanwhile has become addicted to painkillers and is trying to cover this up, partly because if he has the surgery that could sort out his pain problem, he could end up behind a desk. Glee – Season 4 (Blu-ray)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Colfer, Cory Monteith, Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch
Director: Various
Running Time: 924 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 7th 2013

It’s all change in the world of Glee. Many of the main characters have graduated, so Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Rachel (Lea Michele) have headed off to New York, initially Finn (Cory Monteith) is in the army, while others have headed off to various other places.

That means there’s space for some new Glee Club kids at McKinley High, while a few of the old faces are still waiting to graduate. Meanwhile Will (Matthew Morrison) and Emma’s (Jayma Mays) relationship is at a crossroads and most shockingly of all for fans of Klaine, Kurt and Blaine’s (Darren Criss) love may not be able to withstand the distance between them!
