When the first promos for Arrow appeared, it wasn’t clear whether it was going to work. It looked a little po-faced and yet a tad silly, which wasn’t helped by the fact it’s based on a DC Comics character who few people know anything about. However once it started airing it revealed itself to be a surprisingly entertaining show.

After the sinking of his billionaire family’s luxury yacht, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) was presumed dead. However, five years after his disappearance he re-emerges, having been trapped on a remote island all that time. Everyone is amazed to see him, although some still haven’t forgiven him for being the arrogant prig he was before he disappeared. [Read more…]

DreamWorks Animation has a bit of a problem. When it has a hit movie, its share price goes up and they make a lot of money, but if they have a flop, things go bad very fast, which eventually led to a lot of layoffs. To try and stem this boom and bust cycle, they’ve gone heavily into sequels that should be sure-fire winners and more recently tried to take their product to TV, in the hope it can ensure they have a healthy bottom line at all times. After a Kung Fu Panda series comes Dragons: Riders Of Berk, based on How To Train Your Dragon. [Read more…]

Alan Ball won an Oscar for writing American Beauty, but since then he’s largely stuck to TV, creating Six Feet Under, True Blood and now Banshee. While the basic plot makes Banshee sound very different from True Blood, they are to a certain extent bedfellows. In fact they could be set in the same world, except nobody in Banshee knows about the existence of Vampires and other supernatural entities (or at least they don’t mention it). [Read more…]

Hannibal – Season 1 (Blu-ray)

When it was first announced that a TV series was in development based around Hannibal Lecter and the other characters from Thomas Harris Red Dragon, there was a lot of harrumphing that it was a travesty and doomed to failure. However the show has surprised many by being very good. It also makes quite a lot of smart moves, not least that despite being named after Lecter, it doesn’t blow its load and become the cannibal freak show – indeed, it’s never even mentioned he is a cannibal, adding a frisson of excitement to the meals he likes to cook for people. The Newsroom – Season 1 (Blu-ray)

Aaron Sorkin’s TV shows are loved by some and loathed by others. While some have adored the likes of Sports Night, The West Wing and Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, others have found them pretentious and too concerned with politics – and more particularly promulgating a left wing philosophy that has had some US conservatives frothing at the mouth. Falling Skies – Season 3 has just started on UK TV and so to tie into that the second season has now arrived on DVD. The series is set after aliens have arrived on Earth and essentially taken over, harnessing teenagers with their technology and turning them into drones.

Most of the rest of the human population is either dead or scattered, but remnants have gathered together to try to either survive or fight back. This includes the 32 Mass, a ragtag military outfit plotting against the invaders, which also has a civilian contingent under their protection. [Read more…]

House Of Cards – Season 1 (Blu-ray)

Most businesses try out new things by dipping their toe in and limiting their financial exposure, testing the waters before going full hog. However Netflix isn’t that kind of company. For their second original series (after Lilyhammer), some sources suggest they spent $100 million on House Of Cards.

They also managed to draw in such big names as David Fincher to produce on the promise that unlike with normal TV, they’d be relatively hands off and just let the show’s team create. They didn’t stint on the cast either, luring in the likes of Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. [Read more…]

Veep – Season 1 (Blu-ray)

Director: Various
Running Time: 239 mins

Ever since the end of Seinfeld, Hollywood has been trying to work out what to do with Julia Louis-Dreyfus. There have been a few films and some TV series, but nothing has really worked (The New Adventures of Old Christine lasted five seasons, but it didn’t show her off to her best advantage). However she may have found her a perfect fit with Veep, which is a little uneven over its first season, but still manages to be a lot of fun. [Read more…]

Director: Various
Running Time: 720 mins

I’m finding is difficult to write a review of Suits, because much of what I want to say about it sounds like an insult, but I don’t really mean it like that.

Okay, imagine you’re one of the contestants on The Apprentice. You know, the ones who think they’re god’s gift to business and that they crap genius – and whose favourite activity is telling everyone else how brilliant they are. [Read more…]
