Antoine Fuqua May Direct The Equalizer, With Denzel Washington Starring

March 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

antoine-fuquaA movie version of The Equalizer has been in the works for a long time, and it finally looked like it was moving forward with Denzel Washington starring and Rupert Wyatt directing. However recently Wyatt became the latest in a fairly long list of helmer to pick up and then drop the project.

Now Olympus Has Fallen director Antoine Fuqua is in early talks to direct The Equalizer, according to Deadline. Washington is still attached to star, and is probably more than happy with the idea of Fuqua helming, seeing as he won an Oscar for the director’s Training Day.

Richard Wenk (16 Blocks) wrote the screenplay, based on the hit TV series The Equalizer, which ran for four seasons between 1985 and 1989. The show was about Robert McCall (Edward Woodward), a former covert operative who lives a life of solitude and devotes himself to helping others in need. The movie will follow that basic premise, with Denzel Washington portraying a modern character who truly despises any form of injustice.

The $50 million movie is eyeing a late spring/early summer shoot in Boston.

New Star Trek Into Darkness Trailer – Chris Pine takes on Benedict Cumberbatch

March 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paramount has released a new trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness. Now an action-packed new teaser trailer has been released, featuring some fresh footage, with Kirk zooming all over space and wanting to take on Benedict Cumberbatch’s incredibly destructive villain. Plus the Enterprise crashes!

There’s also a few things in there that will certainly reignite speculation that Cumberbatch is actually playing Khan.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘It says, ‘In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

‘With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.’
The film hits UK cinemas on May 9th, 2013, with a US release on May 17th.

Susan Sarandon Joins Melissa McCarthy’s Tammy, With Kathy Bates Going Lesbian

March 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

susan-sarandonMelissa McCarthy is set to make her directorial debut this year with Tammy, alongside hubby Ben Falcone, working from a script they wrote together. Now she’s started to pull the cast together, with THR saying Susan Sarandon and Kathy Bates are in talks to join the film, with Deadline adding that Mark Duplass has also signed up.

The screenplay is about a woman (McCarthy) who loses her job at a fast food restaurant and then finds out her husband is cheating on her. She goes on a road trip with her foul-mouthed, hard-drinking grandmother (Sarandon) to escape the problems in her life.

Shirley MacLaine was apparently in talks for the grandmother role, but that didn’t work out, and so Sarandon is on the process of stepping in. Kathy Bates meanwhile will be ‘the grandmother’s lesbian friend who saves the duo from some bad spots’. Duplass meanwhile is a man who McCarthy meets and develops a strange relationship with during the trip.

The film will shoot this spring.

Kristen Wiig Says Welcome To Me

March 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kristen-wiigKristen Wiig has only just started shooting Anchorman: The Legend Continues, but it seems she’s keen to stay in the Will Ferrell and Adam McKay business, as she now in talks to reteam with them for the indie comedy Welcome To Me, according to THR.

Ferrell and McKay are producing this one, with McKay’s wife, Shira Piven, in the director’s seat. Eliot Laurence’s (who previously worked on TV’s The Big Gay Sketch Show) screenplay is about a woman with dissociative personality disorder who wins the lottery and decides to spend her winnings on a cable access talk show about her life.

As THR notes, the success of Silver Linings Playbook has sparked an interest in other comedies that can see the lighter notes of mental illness, and probably helped get this one off the ground.

There’s no news on when the movie will shoot.

Reese Witherspoon Set For Ensemble Tale The Engagements

March 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

reese-witherspoonFox 2000 has snapped up the rights to J. Courtney Sullivan’s upcoming novel The Engagements for Reese Witherspoon to produce and possibly star in, according to Deadline.

The book, which will be published in the US with June, follows the journey of an engagement ring from the 1930s to present day, which connects five separate couples in unexpected ways.

Here’s the official description of the plot from J. Courtney Sullivan’s website, ‘Evelyn has been married to her husband for forty years – forty years since he slipped off her first wedding ring and put his own in its place. Delphine has seen both sides of love – the ecstatic, glorious highs of seduction, and the bitter, spiteful fury that descends when it’s over. James, a paramedic who works the night shift, knows his wife’s family thinks she could have done better; while Kate, partnered with Dan for a decade, has seen every kind of wedding-beach weddings, backyard weddings, castle weddings-and has vowed never, ever, to have one of her own.

‘As these lives and marriages unfold in surprising ways, we meet Frances Gerety, a young advertising copywriter in 1947. Frances is working on the De Beers campaign and she needs a signature line, so, one night before bed, she scribbles a phrase on a scrap of paper: “A Diamond Is Forever.” And that line changes everything.’

Reese Witherspoon is set to produce through her Pacific Standard company. The actress may also be a part of the ensemble cast, although it is not known what role she may portray. It will be a tough book to adapt, as ensemble tales told across several generations are notoriously tricky. Hopefully they’ll pull it together though.

Transformers 4 Plot Details Revealed, With A Detroit Spring Shoot Announced

March 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

transformers-4-logo
Previous reports had suggested that Michael Bay’s was set to shoot Transformers 4 this summer in Chicago, but it’s now been revealed that the action sequel will actually start shooting in Detroit this spring. One of the main reasons for this is that The Michigan Film Board has granted a $20 million incentive on the proposed $81.9 million Paramount plan to spending in the state.

The Film Board has issues a press release about getting the production to their state, which includes the first info on the plot of the movie, which will see a complete overhaul of the human cast. Here it is, ‘As humanity picks up the pieces, following the conclusion of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Autobots and Decepticons have all but vanished from the face of the planet. However, a group of powerful, ingenious businessman and scientists attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control – all while an ancient, powerful Transformer menace sets Earth in his crosshairs. The epic adventure and battle between good and evil, freedom and enslavement ensues.’

2007’s Transformers and 2011’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon were both shot in Detroit. It isn’t known how long the production will remain in Michigan, although it does appear the movie will probably also shoot in Chicago, presumably for exteriors and big action sequences. The story, written by Ehren Kruger, will be set four years after the events in 2011’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, and Jack Reynor are the only confirmed cast members at this point.

Gavin O’Connor Replaces Lynne Ramsay On Jane Got a Gun

March 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gavin-o-connorAs we reported yesterday, there was plenty of drama on the set of Jane Got A Gun on Tuesday, when director Lynne Ramsay didn’t show up to shoot the movie. That set off a mad scramble to find a replacement. The producers have now found one as Warrior director Gavin O’Connor has officially replaced Lynne Ramsay as the director on the troubled Western.

Ramsay apparently fled without notice after a week of clashing with producer Scott Steindorff. It is not known what the fight was over.

The ructions have also now caused the departure of star Jude Law, according to Deadline. He only signed up last week, but has now left as he specifically signed on to work with Ramsay. It’s been a slight case of musical chairs in the last few weeks, as Michael Fassbender had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict with X-Men: Days of Future Past. Joel Edgerton, who was already cast in a different role, took Michael Fassbender’s role, with Jude Law taking Joel Edgerton’s place.

Now that Gavin O’Connor has signed up, it’s hoped shooting can commence in the next couple of days. Natalie Portman stars in the Western, which is about a wife whose husband coming home riddled with bullet wounds. She enlists the help of an ex-lover to help defend her land when the gang of outlaws who shot her husband return to finish him off. Rodrigo Santoro also star.
