Tim Robbins To Direct Man Under, With Michelle Pfeiffer & Chloe Moretz Set To Star

November 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tim Robbins hasn’t directed a movie since Cradle Will Rock in 1999, but he’s now planning to step back behind the camera, and plans are advanced enough that he’s started building the cast. Robbins is set to both helm and star in the family drama Man Under, with Michelle Pfeiffer and Chloe Moretz also onboard.

Variety reports that the movie follows a family from Yonkers that see their lives “changed forever when a photo of them ends up in the Museum of Modern Art.” The script was written by Ann Cherkis, whose only previously produced credit is the 2007 film The Secret, which starred David Duchovny and Lili Taylor.

Back in August it was reported that Robbins had also signed up to direct City Of Lies, but apparently the script for that still needs work and so he’s hoping to slot in Man Under first.

Top Gun 2 Definitely Cancelled, But Top Gun 3D Is Still Coming

November 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hollywood was shocked in August when Tony Scott wook his own life. At the time of his death, it was reported that he had been busy in the days beforehand scouting locations for the planned Top Gun 2. The suicide left that project in limbo, but now the New York Times confirms what many had assumed, which is that Scott’s death has halted plans for Top Gun 2.

However Paramount has also converted the first film to 3D, with the initial plan having been to release that to help increase excitement for a second film. Now executives are uncertain about exactly what to do, as the conversion is completed, but the studio doesn’t want a Top Gun 3D release to seem insensitive or exploitative, but they do want to get it out there. They are reportedly considering a February 2013 release for Top Gun 3D, with an exclusive one-week IMAX window before opening in standard 3D theaters.

The studio, IMAX and Legend3D, the company behind the conversion, refused to comment or confirm the release plan.

Michael Bay Hints Transformers 4 May Cast Mark Wahlberg After All

November 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While most directors ignore what’s said about them and their projects online, Michael Bay is one of the few who not only keeps an eye on things, but is prone respond (and sometimes have a rant) about what people have said.

Earlier this month the web rumour mill decided that Bay was close to signing Mark Wahlberg for Transformers 4. It seems that at the time there was not truth in it, and Bay quickly debunked the story, the rumour apparently intrigued him.

It appears the idea got his brain working, and it now seems Wahlberg may have a role in Transformers 4 after all. Here’s what the director said about it on his official website: “I squashed a rumor that was on the internet last week. It was about Mark Wahlberg. Mark was rumored to be staring in Transformers 4. We are working on another movie together, not T4. I had such a great time working with Mark on Pain and Gain, and he gave such a great performance – well let’s say that very internet chatter gave me some ideas. We are at the inception of our story process right now on T4. Let’s say some ideas are gaining traction with me and my writer – so I’m here to say thanks internet chatter.”

That doesn’t mean he Wahlberg will definitely be in the film, but it appears there’s now a good chance. The new film will feature an entirely new cast, although it won’t be a full reboot. It isn’t known when production will begin, but a release date June 29th, 2014 is already set.

Jurassic Park 3D Poster Debuts

November 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the few movies I’ve always thought it would actually be worth giving a 3D coversion to is Jurassic Park, and Universal Pictures obviously feels the same way, as they’re busy adding an extra dimension to the movie, ahead of a 20th Anniversary 3D release next year.

Now they’ve unleashed the first poster for the conversion, which takes a classic image and makes it look a little more modern. We’ve also been promised that the trailer for the re-release should be coming very soon, but while we wait for that we have the poster.

The dinosaurs will be getting their 3D outing in cinemas starting April 5th, 2013. While convertind many films seems pointless, Jurassic Park could be one of the few that’s made even more exciting by the process. We’ll have to wait and see whether it works, it’s certainly going to be worth a look.

Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill And More Eyed For David Yates’ Tarzan

November 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

David Yates was a ridiculously busy man making four Harry Potter movies over the space of four years, but since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 he’s taken his time to plot his follow-up. While there have been various things in the works he’s bided his time. Now it appears his next film will be a new take on Tarzan, as Vulture reports that Yates has signed on the dotted line to direct Tarzan for Warner Bros.

Things are already moving forward as the director is also meeting with actors such as Henry Cavill, Charlie Hunnam, and Alexander Skarsgård for the title role. There’s no news on who might be the frontunner though. Warner Bros. is also apparent interested in bringing on Tom Hardy to star in the title role, after his performances in the studio’s blockbusters such as Inception and The Dark Knight Rises.

This is the same version of Tarzan that Footloose director Craig Brewer signed on to helm in June 2011, but he has since dropped out. The character was created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912, and has been the basis of numerous movie and TV adaptation. Constantin Film also has its own mo-cap Tarzan project starring Kellan Lutz.

Dwayne Johnson & Brett Ratner Confirmed for Hercules

November 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last February, it was revealed that Dwayne Johnson and director Brett Ratner were in talks to make a film based on Hercules. Now, we have confirmation that the actor and filmmaker have officially signed on, with MGM co-producing the movie alongside Paramount, according to Variety.

The project is based on Steve Moore’s Radical Publishing ‘revisionist’ graphic novel, Hercules: The Thracian Wars. As you’d expect, it’s all about the title character (Dwayne Johnson), who fights other people’s battles for money, along with his group of mercenaries. He finds a higher calling when he defends the mythical Mount Olympus from an evil army.

Ryan Condal (Paradise Lost) wrote the original screenplay adaptation, with Evan Spiliotopoulos providing the most recent revisions. Shooting is scheduled to begin early next year.

Jared Leto Going Flamboyantly Gay For Dallas Buyer’s Club

November 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

As he’s been concentrating on being a bit of a douche in his band 30 Seconds To Mars, Jared Leto hasn’t been doing a lot of acting in the last few years. His last role was in the indie flick Mr. Nobody in 2009. However now he’s set to return to the big screen in The Dallas Buyers Club, playing a flamboyantly gay cross-dresser, according to Variety.

The movie is about Ron Woodruff (Matthew McConaughey), a man who contracts AIDS in 1986. After becoming frustrated with the lack of medical options in the US, due to the fact drugs have to be extensively tested by the FDA before they become available to patients, he begins smuggling alternative drugs into the country from Mexico. Jared Leto will portray Rayon, another AIDS patient Woodruff befriends at the hospital. Gael García Bernal was previously in talks for the showy cross-dressing role, but a deal was never made. Jennifer Garner also stars.

Jean-Marc Vallée is directing from a screenplay by Melisa Wallack and Craig Borten, with production scheduled to begin next week in New Orleans. Leto can fit it in as 30 Seconds to Mars have recently wrapped up a world tour.

Is Colin Trevorrow Up To Direct Star Wars VII?

November 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As many predicted, the announcement of a new Star Wars movie has put the rumour mill into overdrive. A couple of days ago we reported that Matthew Vaughn is said to be in talks to helm Star Wars VII, and now we have another name to add to the list, Colin Trevorrow.

He’s not exactly a well known name, but he impressed many with his film Safety Not Guaranteed, which got a lot of praise at Sundance (and won the screenwriting award). Now CeleBuzz says they have to an insider, who’s told them the indie filmmaker met with George Lucas himself to discuss the project several months ago.

Lucas was apparently a fan of Safety Not Guaranteed, and it was enough to put Colin on the list of potential candidates to make this highly-anticipated sequel. However it should be noted that Lucas has already said that now he’s sold Lucasfilm to Disney, he’s not choosing the director. It doesn’t mean Trevorrow is ruled out, just that meeting Lucas is far from saying he’s got the job.

First Look At Tom Hanks As Walt Disney On The Set Of Saving Mr. Banks

November 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Saving Mr. Banks has been shooting for a few weeks now, but it’s only now that we get our first slightly fuzzy look at him as Walt Disney, and to be honest, he does look the part. There’s also a shot below of Emma Thompson as PL Travers, from a scene that was shot on Hollywood Boulevard. The other pics seem to have been taken at Disneyland. The pics come from InsideTheMagic and the imagineeringdis Twitter account.

Tom Hanks is playing Walt Disney (it’s the first time the entrepreneur has ever been depicted in a dramatic film) alongside fellow double Oscar-winner Emma Thompson in the role of prickly Mary Poppins novelist, Travers. The film follows how, before signing away the book’s rights, Travers’ demands for contractual script and character control circumvent not only Disney’s vision for the film adaptation, but also those of the creative team of screenwriter Don DaGradi and sibling composers Richard and Robert Sherman.

When Travers travels from London to Hollywood in 1961 to finally discuss Disney’s desire to bring her beloved character to the motion picture screen (a quest he began in the 1940s as a promise to his two daughters), Disney meets a prim, uncompromising sexagenarian not only suspect of the impresario’s concept for the film, but a woman struggling with her own past. During her stay in California, Travers’ reflects back on her childhood in 1906 Australia, a trying time for her family which not only molded her aspirations to write, but one that also inspired the characters in her 1934 book.

The film is due for an Oscar-bait December 2013 release.

Elfquest Movie Finds New Life As An Indie

November 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This one is a bit of a fan’s dream come true. Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes loved the comic book Elfquest so much they made their own fan short, Elfquest: A Fan Imagining. That’s now led to them being able to pick up the film rights to the property and announcing at the American Film Market that they’re going to make a movie version.

The plan is to set it up as in independent project, with funding now being sought. The news comes after years in which Hollywood has been mulling over making a movie about the bunch of elves who live on a primitive planet.

Wendy and Richard Pini created the comic series way back in 1978, and it’s managed to sustain popularity through various changes in the comic business, which have made it one of the rare titles that have been published by both Marvel and DC. The latter deal, which saw DC starting a four-year Elfquest run in 2003, led to Warner Bros picking up the film rights and planning a movie. They dropped that idea earlier this year, which has allowed Thorpe and Rhodes to step in.

As yet, it’s tough to say whether they’ll be successful in getting the cash together to make a proper Elfquest film, but you can take a look at their fan movie below and see if you think they’d make a good feature film. (Source: Variety)
