Jennifer Lawrence May Join Glass Castle

April 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence is ridiculously hot at the moment and can pretty much have any role that she wants. Now she’s planning to team up with Lionsgate once again, signing on to star in an adaptation of The Glass Castle, according to Deadline.

The project is based on the memoir of gossip columnist Jeannette Walls, which was first published in 2005 and stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for over 250 weeks, the longest stretch for any memoir. The book delves into the writer’s childhood with her, ‘dysfunctional but vibrant’ family.

Screenwriter Marti Noxon (Fright Night, I Am Number Four) will write the screenplay. No production schedule is set, but it will likely be quite some time before we see this adaptation. Lawrence is due to shoot Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire later this year, and will then immediately start shooting the X-Men: First Class Sequel, so Glass Castle won’t be able to get going until next spring at the earliest.

The Impossible Trailer

April 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Boxing Day tsunami was such a huge event that film has often seemed unsure how to deal with it. There was an exceptional sequence in Hereafter, but the first major movie to deal head-on with it will come this year with The Impossible, from The Orphanage director Juan Antonio Bayona. The first full trailer has now appeared, and while it’s dubbed in Spanish, it introduces us to Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts as a mother and father who are on holiday in Thailand with their kids when the tsunami hits. Separated from one another, they must find each other amongst the debris. It doesn’t seem it’ll be an easy watch, but it should hit cinemas this autumn.

The Five Year Engagement is bidding to be this year’s big gross-out rom com hit and from the evidence of this red band trailer, it’s gonna be a lot of fun. You normally think of women trying to strong-arm men into marriage, but The Five-Tear Engagement sees things from the other side, with Jason Segel being forced to delay marrying Emily Blunt so she can get on with her career. Here’s the synopsis: ‘The director and writer/star of Forgetting Sarah Marshall reteam for the irreverent comedy The Five-Year Engagement. Beginning where most romantic comedies end, the new film from director Nicholas Stoller, producer Judd Apatow and Rodney Rothman looks at what happens when an engaged couple, Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, keeps getting tripped up on the long walk down the aisle.’ It’s due in UK cinemas June 22nd.

Journey 2 Director Brad Peyton Takes On DC Comics Adaptation Lobo

April 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

DC Comics character Lobo has been up for a movie adaptation for years, going through various hands but never actually getting that close to being made. Now Journey 2: The Mysterious Island director Brad Peyton has signed up to re-write the screenplay and direct Lobo, according to Deadline.

Back in January 2010, Guy Ritchie left the project to direct the fast-tracked sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. It’s taken a couple of years to get it going again, but now the film is moving forward with Peyton attached.

Lobo is an interstellar bounty hunter and mercenary who travels the galaxy looking for his next target. The character was created in 1984 by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, and initially popped up as an occasional villain. However he reached his greatest levels of popularity in the 1990s, when he was resurrected as a renegade biker.

Bridesmaids Helmer Paul Feig Takes Up The Wish List

April 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paul Feig had a huge hit directing Bridesmaids, but while he’s attached himself to a few films he’s taken his time deciding what to make next. However it appears he’s now made up his mind as THR reports he’s signed up to helm of Disney’s Wish List, which is likely to be his next movie.

Reese Witherspoon signed up to star in the film a few months ago, and will play an ambitious career woman who lost her inner child when she was young due to ten wishes never coming true. It turns out that the coin upon which she wished got stuck in the wishing well and never reached the bottom. When the coin suddenly becomes dislodged and floats to the bottom of the pool, the 30-year-old uptight professional must deal with all ten childhood wishes coming true, all at the same time.

Wish List was originally written for a male lead, but is being retooled for Witherspoon. Kung Fu Panda 2 scribes Glenn Berger and Jonathan Aibel are behind the screenplay. Feig will shoot the movie later this year.

Ray Liotta Getting Stuck Into The Rut

April 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although from a British perspective it’s tough to imagine all that many people wanting to pay to watch a movie about hunting deer, shooting things is popular in the States and so you can get a film like The Rut. The movie now has a new cast member, as Variety reports that Ray Liotta is set to take on the villain role in director Karyn Kusama’s (Jennifer’s Body) film.

Chloe Moretz is playing the lead role in the movie, which is described as a mix between Whale Rider and Winter’s Bone. The story follows a young girl who sets out on a lone deer hunt in the woods to impress her father (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Ray Liotta will play an obsessive bow hunter who considers Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character his bitter rival.

The film will shoot later this year for release next year.

Think Like A Man Tops The US Box Office

April 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hollywood has never quite gotten to grips with the African American audience, so that every time a film with a largely black cast does well, it’s treated as a massive surprise. That’s certainly the case with Think Like A Man, which was barely on most people’s radar but scored a huge $33 million opening to top the box office chart.

The film knocked the movie many had expected to top the chart, The Lucky One, into second spot with $22 million. It’s certainly not a bad start for a romantic drama and marks a rare weekend when two female-focussed movies have opened strong against one another.

Disneynature’s Chimpanzee opened in fourth spot with $10.3 million, which is the biggest opening ever for a nature documentary. Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of April 20th-22nd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Think Like A Man $33.0 $33.0
2 The Lucky One $22.8 $22.8
3 The Hunger Games $14.5 $356.9
4 Chimpanzee $10.2 $10.2
5 The Three Stooges $9.2 $29.3
6 Cabin In The Woods $7.7 $26.9
7 American Reunion $5.2 $48.3
8 Titanic 3D $5.0 $52.8
9 21 Jump Street $4.6 $127.0

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone May Reteam For Focus

April 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone in Crazy Stupid Love

I wondered when watching Crazy Stupid Love whether during the editing of the movie, it had become more about Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone than it had been in the original script, in order to make the most of their chemistry. Now it seems the film’s directors, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, want to continue that chemistry, as they’re trying to get the duo to team up again for their new film, Focus.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. picked up the directors’ script, which is about a con artist who teaches a new grifter the tricks of the trade, before they become romantically involved. Their paths then cross again in the future, which complicates both their lives.

No offers have been issued to either actor yet, but the hope is they will indeed agree to make the film and they have shown interest.

Taylor Swift May Play Joni Mitchell In Girls Like Us

April 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although it seems there’s endless talk about making a film about Joni Mitchell, there’s never been a really good biopic about the singer. However it appears Taylor Swift is hoping to change that, as Variety reports that the country singer hopes to play Mitchell in Girls Like Us, an adaptation of Sheila Weller’s book of the same name.

The book looks at the musical careers of Carole King, Carly Simon, and Joni Mitchell. The actress does not have an official offer yet but has been linked to the role for a while, while Alison Pill has auditioned to play Carole King.

Katie Jacobs, who’s best known as an executive producer on House, will direct from a screenplay by John Sayles. The project doesn’t have the official greenlight yet, but production is expected to start later this year.

While Swift had a small role in Valentine’s Day and voiced a part in The Lorax, she’s been looking for a decent lead role to really launch her film career and hopes Girls Like Us will be it.

Sony Takes Boy Nobody For Jaden Smith

April 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jaden Smith had a big hit with The Karate Kid and after that Hollywood was falling over itself to offer him roles. However he’s taken his time to make sure he goes for exactly the right part, so that his first film following Karate Kid doesn’t arrive until next year, when he teams up with father Will for After Earth.

It appears he may now have the role he’ll play following After Earth, as Variety reports that Sony Pictures has acquired the rights to Allen Zadoff’s young adult novel Boy Nobody, setting it up as a starring vehicle for Jaden. The book is about a teenage assassin (Smith) who has been programmed not to feel any emotions. However his life becomes more complicated when he finally starts to feel once again. As you’ve probably already guessed, the character is described as a teenage Jason Bourne.

No producers or screenwriters have been attached to the project yet, which is viewed as the first part of a franchise, with Allen Zadoff already planning two more books featuring the character.
