Disney & Seth Gordon Take On Ground Control To Major Tom

April 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Disney may have lost its studio chief yesterday when Rich Ross resigned, but it’s business as usual as the studio has just acquired the spec screenplay Ground Control to Major Tom by Jason A. Micallef (Butter).

Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) is attached to direct the romantic comedy. No plot details are known, and despite the title being one of the lyrics of David Bowie’s Space Oddity, it isn’t clear how the script relates to the song, if at all. The song is about a fictional astronaut named Major Tom, although it isn’t known if astronauts or outer space figure into the plot of this project, and it hasn’t been suggested the script is a director ‘adaptation’ of the song.

Seth Gordon is directing Identity Thief next, which starts shooting on Monday, so it’ll be a while until he gets round to this one. (Source: Deadline)

Guy Pearce Joins Iron Man 3 As Geneticist Aldrich Killian

April 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Iron Man 3 due to start shooting next month, you’d have expected to hear more about new cast members by now, but it appears with all eyes on The Avengers, things are only starting to happen now. The film did sign up Ben Kingsley a couple weeks ago and has now added another new actor, as Variety reports Guy Pearce is in final negotiations to join the cast.

The actor will portray geneticist Aldrich Killian, who created the Extremis technology which will play an important part in the sequel. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) adopts the technology after Killian sells it to some terrorists. The story will follow the spread of a virus through nanotechnology, which Tony Stark tries to stop. Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), and Don Cheadle (James Rhodes) will reprise their roles from Iron Man 2, with Kingsley portraying the villain.

Production is scheduled to start next month in North Carolina, with Shane Black directing from a screenplay by Drew Pearce.

Clone Trailer – Doctor Who gets his bum out and has one hell of an Oedipus complex

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Doctor Who himself, Matt Smith, makes his movie debut in Clone (an uncredited part in In Bruges doesn’t count), where he has to deal with the ultimate Oedipus complex, where he’s the clone of his mother’s dead lover! As the tagline for the US release put it – ‘What are the consequences of giving birth to your dead boyfriend?’ The answer to that is that they’re pretty f*cked up. Eva Green also stars, continuing her run of sci-fi delving into deep and dark places, which she’s also explored  in the likes of Perfect Sense and Franklyn.

However I’d imagine there’s a lot of people who’ll want to watch the trailer above, just because you get to see Matt Smith’s bum!

Ruby Sparks Trailer – Paul Dano creates a woman!

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s ridiculous that it’s taken six years for Little Miss Sunshine directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris to make a follow-up movie, but finally Ruby Sparks is on its way and the first trailer has been released. In the film Calvin (Paul Dano) is a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career but is now struggling with his writing – as well as his romantic life. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby who inspires him. When Calvin finds Ruby (Zoe Kazan), in the flesh, sitting on his couch about a week later, he is completely flabbergasted that his words have turned into a living, breathing person. It hits US cinemas in July, but no UK date is currently set.

GI Joe: Retaliation Character Banners Show Off The Manliness

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although many are still wondering why they bothered to make a sequel to GI: Joe, the fact is the first film was actually quite fun and there are plenty of places for a sequel to go. It has been noticeable though that while Channing Tatum is back, he’s rather been sidelined in the marketing. He does get his own character banner though, alongside the likes of new additions Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis who play Roadblack and the original Joe respectively. Take a look at them all above and below. The film’s out August 3rd.

Director Francis Lawrence Offered Hunger Games Sequel

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Once Gary Ross officially confirmed that he wouldn’t direct Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, there’s been a lot of speculation over who would replace him. Lionsgate has been scrambling to find a replacement so that the movie can keep with its plan to shoot this autumn (something that’s vital as Catching Fire needs to wrap by December so Jennifer Lawrence can move on to X-Men: First Class 2).

Now Variety reports that I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence has been chosen by Lionsgate to helm Catching Fire, with a formal offer expected to be issued imminently. Bennett Miller (Moneyball) was the other front runner, and both directors met with the studio yesterday before Lionsgate made their final choice. Other directors being considered included Tomas Alfredson, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Cary Fukunaga, and Duncan Jones.

Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth are all returning for the sequel, which already has a release date set of November 22nd, 2013.

Mark Wahlberg Eyes Avon Man

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of years ago, Hugh Jackman was all set to star in Avon Man, with the actor at the time seeing it as a priority. However for various reason he ended up dropping out of the film, and since then it’s pretty much been in stasis. Now though, Deadline reports that Mark Wahlberg is in early talks to star in the 20th Century Fox comedy Avon Man.

The movie is about a group of guys who are laid off from an auto dealership. One of them reluctantly becomes an Avon salesman. While he initially expects this to be emasculating, he relies on his charm and becomes a top seller. He then has to save his town and help his struggling family by recruiting his macho unemployed pals to hawk beauty products so that they can win a regional contest.

There’s no director currently attached, although getting one will be first order of business if Whalberg does sign on.

DiCaprio & Scorsese Confirmed For Wolf Of Wall Street

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Martin Scorsese has been flirting with The Wolf of Wall Street for years, with the project often seeming close to being his next movie, before he moves on to something else. However now it appears he’s finally going to make it, as Variety reports Scorsese is now locked in, with Leonardo DiCaprio starring and a plan to start shooting this summer.

Based on Jordan Belfort’s best-selling memoir The Wolf of Wall Street, DiCaprio will play Belfort, looking at his dramatic rise and fall on Wall Street, along with his hard-partying lifestyle and tumultuous personal life, which included drug and alcohol addiction. Terence Winter (The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire) wrote the screenplay.

Production on The Wolf of Wall Street is slated to begin in August in New York. It’ll be Scorsese and DiCaprio’s fifth movie together.

Mickey Rourke & Rosario Dawson Back For Sin City 2

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week it was confirmed that the long-awaited Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will finally start shooting this summer, after director Robert Rodriguez wraps on another sequel, Machete Kills. The initial said many of the original cast would return, while stopping short of announcing exactly who.

Rodriguez has now been talking to MTV and confirmed that Mickey Rourke and Rosario Dawson will both be back for the sequel. He says, “We still have to cast. I’m shooting Machete Kills next month, and we go right into Sin City. It might overlap, but we haven’t done any casting yet, except for the people who we know are already in it and returning. A Dame to Kill For, all those people come back. I just had lunch with Mickey [Rourke] this weekend. He’s all excited to come back, but he’s probably the first one. I saw Rosario [Dawson] too. I ran into her for something else, and she’s pumped. They’ve always been excited about doing another one, so that will be fun.”

It has been long rumored that Angelina Jolie may play the title role, although the director revealed he hasn’t reached out to her yet. “I haven’t even gotten to meet with her yet about it or discuss with Frank (Miller) about who we would want to go with or talk to first. That’s a fun process, but that probably won’t happen in the next month.” It’s also true that if the plan is to shoot this summer, Jolie is probably about, as she’s due to start shooting Malifecent in June.

Tony Danza Up For Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Directorial Debut

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joseph Gordon Levitt started out in a sitcom (Third Rock From The Sun) and now for his directorial debut he’s reaching out to a sitcom legend and giving him a rare film role. Variety reports that Tony Danza has joined the cast of the untitled movie, which was formerly known as Don Jon’s Addiction. It’s not actually the first time they’ve worked together, as they both appeared in the 1994 comedy Angels in the Outfield.

As well as directing, Gordon-Levitt will play a womanising porn addict, who goes on a quest to become less selfish. Scarlett Johansson will play his girlfriend and Julianne Moore is portraying a widow who the main character meets at night school. Tony Danza will play the lothario’s father, who is obsessed with sports and doesn’t pay enough attention to his children.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt will direct from his own original screenplay, with production set to commence next month in Los Angeles.
