Absolutely Fabulous Going Big Screen

November 9, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

A few months ago it was revealed that Jennifer Saunders was hoping to put together an Absolutely Fabulous reunion, letting us catch up on Edina and Patsy 20 years after they first debuted back in 1992. However at the time, it was assumed that whatever Saunders came up with would appear on TV. Now though, it looks like it’ll be getting a cinematic outing, according to Deadline.

Jennifer Saunders apparently plans to start work on the script after she finished writing the Spice Girls musical, Viva Forever. It’s been suggested that the movie, tentatively titled Ab Fab: The Movie (which is stunningly uninventive), will begin with Edina and Patsy waking up, hung over, on a yacht in the middle of the ocean, with no cell phone signal to call for help.

It’s early days though, as while BBC Films boss Christine Langan commented, “I think she’s a genius. I can’t imagine anything more exciting than working with her,” no proper deal is currently in place with Jennifer Saunders for the movie yet. Let’s hope it all come together.

First Pics From Silver Linings Playbook

November 9, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

After spending months flitting from project to project, director David O’Russell finally went into production on a new project recently, The Silver Linings Playbook, with a great cast including Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Jackie Weaver Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Stiles and Chris Tucker.

Now the first images have popped up online, via Collider, who got hold of them at the AFM, along with a synopsis. Take a look at the pics above and below. Here’s the synopsis:

Adapted from the best-selling novel by Matthew Quick, THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK is a touching, one-of-a-kind comedy about love and second chances.

Pat Peoples (Bradley Cooper) is a man always trying to look on the bright side of life – the title of the story takes it’s name from the expression that “every cloud has a silver lining.” Released from the hospital after losing his wife to another man, Pat believes this age-old adage is just the ticket to trying to win her back and get his life on track. Trying to remain resolutely undiscouraged, Pat moves back in with his parents and devotes himself entirely to becoming the man his wife always wanted him to be. But it’s an uphill battle. Until Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a beautiful young woman whose life also has not turned out the way she wanted. Together, the couple will try and navigate through their lives and stay true to who they are, always just one adventure away from a unique friendship, and possibly even love.

New Pics Of R-Patz In Cosmopolis

November 9, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Some new images have popped up online from the upcoming Robert Pattinson movie, Cosmopolis, including the gun-toting one above, which shows us R-Patz in a different (and less soppy) way than we’ve seen before. Based on Don DeLillo’s novel, Young billionaire Eric Packer (Pattinson) starts out just wanting to get a haircut, but as the day progresses, he must deal with the fallout from the decisions he’s made in his life.

David Cronenberg is in the director’s chair, which should ensure this is well worth a watch. The cast also includes Sarah Gadon (who’s in the image at the bottom of this post), Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Samantha Morton and Mathieu Almaric. There’s no release date set as yet. Jake Abel Joins The Host

November 9, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Jake Abel is probably feeling slightly relieved that people always just look at him and see a villain, as having played bad guys in both Percy Jackson and I Am Number Four, he’s just landed a slightly different type of role in The Host, the planned adaptation of Twilight author Stephenie Meyer’s novel.

Abel is is talks to play Ian, according to Deadline, one of the last remaining humans whose brain hasn’t been co-opted by the invasive alien ‘souls’, that are taking people over one by one. Saoirse Ronan is set to play the central character, Melanie Stryder, who has a soul named Wanderer implanted in her mind. However while normally Melanie’s personality would be expected to fade into the background, her emotions and memories overwhelm the invader and makes it change its mind about its races master plan.

Director Andrew Niccol is now down to the last few finalists for the other main male role of Luke, with Liam Hemsworth, Max Irons, Kit Harington and Jai Courtney on the shortlist. Expect to hear who got the part soon.

Great New Snow White & The Huntsman Banner

November 9, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The battle between the Snow Whites is gearing up, especially now that Tarsem’s movie has a name, Mirror Mirror. Now Rupert Sanders’ film, Snow White & The Huntsman, tries to pull ahead with a wonderfully fantastical banner, which you can see above, showing off Chris Hemsworth, Kristin Stewart and Charlize Theron in a rather dark fantasy setting. The movie will be in cinemas June 1st, 2011 (Mirror Mirror, meanwhile is due in March).

We’ve also got a new poster for Cameron Crowe’s We Bought A Zoo, which we mainly included just because it’s proof that studio poster art isn’t dead. The film, which sees Matt Damon as a main with no experience of looking after animals purchasing a zoo, is due in UK cinemas March 30th, 2012.

Luke Grimes Signs On For Taken 2

November 9, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It may have taken them a while to get Taken 2 ready for filming, but it’s now gearing up to shoot, and new cast members are coming on-board to join returnees Liam Neeson and Maggie Grace. The latest to sign up is Luke Grimes, according to Variety.

Grimes is probably best known for playing Ryan in TV’s Brothers & Sisters, but has also appeared in All The Boys Love Mandy Lane (which was his debut) and will soon be in The Wait and Outlaw Country. In Taken 2 he’s set to be Maggie Grace’s love interest, who gets roped into helping her when her parents are kidnapped by the father of one of the bad guys from the first movie.

Olivier Megaton is set to direct.

Hayley Atwell Returning With Captain Nemo

November 9, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

After Captain America, Hayley Atwell is much in demand, and it seems she wants to keep with the historical sci-fi flavour as she’s signed up to start in The Return Of Captain Nemo, according to Deadline, which is, unsurprisingly, a sequel to Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

David Morrisey has also recently joined the movie, while Hugh Bonneville has been onboard for a while as the titular captain. The premise of the $10 million 3D film is that Captain Nemo is languishing in prison, but he may be the only hope when sea monsters start sinking ships up and down the US east coast. Morrissey will be the the chief adviser to President Ulysses S Grant, who gets Nemo out of jail to help, while Atwell will be Morrisey’s niece, Sara, who becomes the heroine of the piece.

The movie will be a CG heavy production, which like 300 will largely shoot on green-screens. This should allow them to infuse the movie with steampunk elements, without costing the earth. It should be noted that this is entirely separate to Disney’s planned big-budget take on 20,000 Leagues, which David Fincher is supposed to be directing. That movie is currently in dry dock while Fincher completes Dragon Tattoo and Disney ponders how much money it’s willing to risk on it, considering the huge budgets it’s already extended to the likes of John Carter and Lone Ranger.

Brett Ratner Resigns As Oscar Producer

November 9, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Many people wondered why the Academy chose Brett Ratner to produce this year’s Oscar ceremony in the first place, but we don’t need to ponder about that any more, as he’s out, having resigned from the position following some incredibly unwise anti-gay comments and talking about his sex life, while out promoting Tower Heist.

You can read more about Ratner’s anti-gay slur here, which involved him saying ‘Rehearsal’s for fags’ at a screening of his latest movie. He was also criticised for having suggested he’d slept with actress Olivia Munn when he hadn’t. It didn’t help either that the controversy around all this stirred up news of other things he’s said in the past that may have given the Academy pause, such as him boasting he slept with Lindsay Lohan when she was really young.

He has now resigned as Oscar producer and released a statement which seems genuinely full of contrition over his actions, especially the anti-gay comment. Take a look at it below, courtesy of THR.

Dear Colleagues,

Over the last few days, I’ve gotten a well-deserved earful from many of the people I admire most in this industry expressing their outrage and disappointment over the hurtful and stupid things I said in a number of recent media appearances. To them, and to everyone I’ve hurt and offended, I’d like to apologize publicly and unreservedly.

As difficult as the last few days have been for me, they cannot compare to the experience of any young man or woman who has been the target of offensive slurs or derogatory comments. And they pale in comparison to what any gay, lesbian, or transgender individual must deal with as they confront the many inequalities that continue to plague our world.

So many artists and craftspeople in our business are members of the LGBT community, and it pains me deeply that I may have hurt them. I should have known this all along, but at least I know it now: words do matter. Having love in your heart doesn’t count for much if what comes out of your mouth is ugly and bigoted. With this in mind, and to all those who understandably feel that apologies are not enough, please know that I will be taking real action over the coming weeks and months in an effort to do everything I can both professionally and personally to help stamp out the kind of thoughtless bigotry I’ve so foolishly perpetuated.

As a first step, I called Tom Sherak this morning and resigned as a producer of the 84th Academy Awards telecast. Being asked to help put on the Oscar show was the proudest moment of my career. But as painful as this may be for me, it would be worse if my association with the show were to be a distraction from the Academy and the high ideals it represents.

I am grateful to GLAAD for engaging me in a dialogue about what we can do together to increase awareness of the important and troubling issues this episode has raised and I look forward to working with them. I am incredibly lucky to have a career in this business that I love with all of my heart and to be able to work alongside so many of my heroes. I deeply regret my actions and I am determined to learn from this experience.

Sincerely, Brett Ratner

Goon Red Band Trailer

November 8, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If this NSFW trailer is anything to go by, Goon is gonna be pretty violent for a sports flick – but then, it is about ice hockey. Based on a true story, Seann William Scott plays Doug Glatt, a bouncer who overcomes long odds to lead a team of under performing misfits to semi-pro hockey glory, beating the crap out of everything that stands in his way. No UK date is currently set, but we shouldn’t have to wait too long for Goon.

Clive Owen Set For Recall

November 8, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Although Clive Owen seems to like to see himself as an action star, the rest of the world doesn’t appear to be as convinced. That doesn’t mean he’s going to give up though, as he’s attached to Recall, based on a script by Taxi Driver writer, Paul Schrader.

Variety reports that the film is currently doing the rounds at the American Film Market, and will see Owen as an NSA agent involved in a botched hostage rescue situation. Afterwards he’s got a bit of amnesia, but as his memory begins to returns and he starts looking for the truth, he realises he can’t trust anyone, or even his own brain. Hmm, already sounds a bit cheesy, but we’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.

Harold Becker (Mercury Rising) is set to direct, with shooting planned for next March.
