Cate Blanchett Circling Female-Led Ocean’s 11 Spin-Off

June 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cate-BlanchettFor several years there’s been talk of a continuation of the Ocean’s Eleven franchise, with a new set of female thieves being drafted in. While it got trapped in pre-production (not least due to producer Jerry Weintraub’s death), it’s now moving forward again, with The Playlist reporting that Cate Blanchett is in talks to star.

If she does, she would join Sandra Bullock in movie, and together they would become the equivalent of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean and his confidante, Brad Pitt’s Rusty Ryan. There’s also been talk of Jennifer Lawrence joining the movie, and while her representatives have denies it, that may be just due to scheduling issues that they could yet sort out. It wouldn’t be too shocking if she did sign on, as she’s previously worked with the spin-off’s director, Gary Ross, on The Hunger Games.

It’s believed the movie will centre on eight female thieves (the working title is Ocean’s Ocho), and Bullock’s character may be Danny Ocean’s sister. It’s not clear when it might start shooting.

Anthony Hopkins Joins Transformers: The Last Knight

June 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anthony-hopkinsShooting on Transformers: The Last Knight is kicking off just about now, but it appears there’s still some room in the cast, as the official Transformers Twitter account has tweeted that they’ve added a real Knight, Sir Anthony Hopkins. However, what they haven’t said it what the Welsh Oscar-winner will be doing in them movie.

Indeed, there’s not been much info on the plot at all. However, there has been a logo with a sword on it, and the info that Mark Wahlberg and Josh Duhamel will be back, alongside newcomers Isabela Moner and Jerrod Carmichael.

Although it seems like an unusual choice for Hopkins, who’s normally thought of as being part of more prestigious project, he’s certainly not averse to more commercial fare. Of course he was Thor’s dad Dad in the first two Thor movies, and also popped up in the likes of the 1990s Zorro movies  and 2010’s The Wolfman. He’ll soon be seen in HBO TV series based on Michael Crichton’s Westworld. [Read more…]

Bill Skarsgard Will Be Pennywise The Clown In Stephen King’s It Reboot

June 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bill-skarsgardAs with other planned new adaptations of Stephen King novels, such as The Dark Tower and The Stand, a film based on his classic ‘It’ has had a rather on-again, off-again history. Now though it’s back on again, but it’s a different incarnation from the two-part one being planned in 2015 with Cary Fukunaga (True Detective) directing and Will Poulter as the evil Pennywise the Clown.

However, they are keeping with a young Pennywise, as THR reports that Bill Skarsgard – brother of Alexander and star of Hemlock Grove – is attached to play the role. There’s also been a change of directors, with ‘Mama’ helmer Andy Muschietti now set to helm.

King’s novel follows a group of kids called the Losers Club that encounter a creature called It, which preys on children and whose favourite form is that of a sadistic clown called Pennywise (famously played by Tim Curry in a 1990 two-part TV version). When the creature resurfaces years later, the now-grown kids are called upon to regroup again, this time as adults, even though they have no memory of the first battle.

The plan is still to make it as two movies, with the first showing what happened to the Losers Club as kids, with the second showing their interactions with Pennywise as grown-ups.

Oscar-Winner Brie Larson In Early Talks To Play Captain Marvel

June 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brie-larsonThere’s been a fair amount of criticism of Marvel Studios for the fact it’s largely concentrated on male superheroes, while refusing to give even popular female characters, such as Black Widow, a movie of her own (Agent Carter got her own TV show, but that didn’t happen until Marvel was almost forced to see the potential, and it certainly wasn’t in cinemas). However, they are planning to at least slightly redress the balance with Captain Marvel.

Different incarnations of the character have been both male and female in the comics, but for the movies they are concentrating on ‘Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the super powers of strength, energy projection and flight.’

Danvers has been part of The Avengers in the comics, and so should be a good fit as Marvel prepares for a future when the likes of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth may want to leave the cinematic universe.

Now it seems the studio has found the person they want to play the title character, with THR reporting that Oscar-winning Room actress Brie Larson is in early talks for the role. It’s unclear at the moment how likely it is she will sign on, and it may depend on who the director is, as it appears Marvel is keen to find a female lenser as quickly as they can, with the likes of Niki Caro (Whale Rider) and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) being near the top of the list.

Captain Marvel is die out March 2019.

Monster Trucks Trailer – Or at least a monster in a truck, with Lucas Till

June 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

monster-trucks-slideI think it’s likely the title for this movie came before any idea about the plot, which may explain why the trailer suggests this is gonna be a bit of an odd movie. Not necessarily a bad one, but an odd one.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Looking for any way to get away from the life and town he was born into, Tripp (Lucas Till), a high school senior, builds a Monster Truck from bits and pieces of scrapped cars. After an accident at a nearby oil-drilling site displaces a strange and subterranean creature with a taste and a talent for speed, Tripp may have just found the key to getting out of town and a most unlikely friend.

‘Melding cutting edge visual effects and state-of-the-art CGI, Monster Trucks is an action filled adventure for the whole family that will keep you on the edge of your seat and ultimately touch your heart.’

Ice Age’s Chris Wedge directs the movie, which will be in cinemas February 2017. Take a look at the first trailer below. [Read more…]

The Space Between Us Trailer – Asa Butterfield is heading into space for love

May 28, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

space-between-us-slideA couple of years ago Asa Butterfield was in space as the talented title character in Ender’s Game. Now he’s going back for The Space Between Us, a sci-fi teen love story. It also has a slight feel of the sort of existential science fiction the 1970s gave us.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Described as being a “star-crossed science fiction love story,” The Space Between Us follows two teens from different worlds. Gardner Elliot, the first human born on Mars, is secretly raised in an experimental colony after his astronaut mother dies during childbirth. Sixteen years later, Gardner begins an online romance with a girl living in Colorado and hatches a plan to travel across the universe to meet her. Now, on the run, with Earth’s gravity threatening his very existence, Gardner must race against time and nature to find his love and win her heart. Once united, the two teens venture to seek out the enigmatic billionaire who funded the original expedition to Mars, in hopes of uncovering information about Gardner’s mother and the mysterious circumstances surrounding how Gardner came into existence.’

Take a look at the trailer below. The movie will be out later this year. [Read more…]

First Look At Katherine Waterston In Alien: Covenant

May 28, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alien-covenant-pic1Prometheus 2, which has now become Alien: Covenant to tie it closer to the classic franchise after the mixed reception to the prequel, has been shooting for a while now. The first image has arrived, via the Alien Facebook page.

It features Katherine Waterston, who is the new female lead (Noomi Rapace may make a small appearance, but won’t have a large role). Covenant isn’t completely ignoring Prometheus though, as it will follow what happened after Michael Fassbender and Rapace left the alien planet, in search of the engineers that apparently created the human race.

The recently released synopsis states: ‘Set as the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus, Alien: Covenant connects directly to Ridley Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. It begins with the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. There, the crew discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.’

Ridley Scott is once more directing, with an August 2017 release date set. [Read more…]
