Jon M. Chu To Helm Jem and the Holograms Movie

March 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jon-m-chuThere have been quite a few movies in the last few years based on toy lines, but most have them have been about franchises known around the world. However now one is coming that’s famous in the US, but not so well known in many other countries – Jem and the Holograms, according to THR.

G.I. Joe Retaliation director Jon M. Chu will direct the movie, with Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions (Insidious, The Purge) and musical mogul Scooter Braun producing.

Jem and the Holograms will be a modern day live-action version of the 1980s Hasbro/Marvel cartoon, running for three season. The film will follow ‘an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation… She and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt – one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.’ The girl is Jessica Benton, who becomes her rock band alter-ego Jem, who performs alongside her band, The Holograms.

Chu, Blum and Braun announced the film with a special announcement video this morning, which asks ‘JemHeads’ to submit ideas for the movie, such as dream casting thoughts, audition tapes, costume designs, and even what the music should be. It seems like the hop to capitalise on the popularity of jukebox musicals like Glee and Pitch Perfect. You can take a look at the video below and submit your photos or ideas here.

Doug Liman Takes On Splinter Cell, With Tom Hardy Still Attached To Star

March 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

doug-limanDoug Liman is currently finishing up work on his Tom Cruise sci-fi Edge Of Tomorrow, but he’s already thinking about what to do next, as THR reports he is in early talks to direct the video game adaptation Splinter Cell.

The movie still has Tom Hardy attached to star (he’s been involved since November 2012), who will play Sam Fisher, an expert operative for Echelon, which specialises in black ops. His job is to neutralise terrorist threats across the globe, using his combat training and an assortment of high-tech weapons and gadgets.

The video games, based on Tom Clancy’s books, have been incredibly popular, selling more than 23 million units worldwide.

Liman’s involvement suggests he really wants to work with Tom Hardy, as they were previously both attached to Everest, about George Mallory’s ill-fated attempt to become the first man to the top of Mount Everest. That project never got off the ground, partly because of a rival movie that is currently filming, which may be set in the present day, but still involves tragedy striking on the world’s highest mountain.

Justin Lin Heads For The Crime Thriller Times Square

March 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

justin-linAfter four instalments, Justin Lin left the Fast & Furious franchise behind, and quickly filled his schedule with all sorts of possible films, none of which have panned out so far. However he’s still trying to get something into production and now he’s signed up for another possibility, Times Square, according to Deadline.

The movie is about a young man who is torn between the local crime boss who raised him and the ex-cop who swore to protect him. The film is set during the time when authorities decided to clean up new York’s Times Square, transforming from a dangerous, seedy area to the tourist destination it is today.

Taylor Materne and Jake Rubin wrote the script, which landed on the 2012 Black List. Lin is also attached to direct a currently untitled Bourne movie, but it’s not known whether that or Times Square might come first.

Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin’s Husbands Will Hook Up In A New Gay-Themed Netflix Series

March 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jane-Fonda-lily-tomlin
In 1980 Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton teamed up for 9 To 5 and in the process became a bit of a one-off legendary partnership. Now Tomlin and Fonda are reuniting for a new series on Netflix, called Grace And Frankie, and it’s even got a little gay interest thrown in for good measure.

The comedy focuses on nemeses Grace (Fonda) and Frankie (Tomlin) facing the last chapter of their lives, though not in the way they expected. When their husbands announce they are in love with each other and plan to get married, the women find their lives both turned upside down and – to their dismay – permanently intertwined. Eventually, to their surprise, they find they have each other.

13 half-hour episodes of the show, which comes from Friends creator Marta Kauffman and Emmy nominee Howard J. Morris, are planned. It should go live this summer.

“Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are among the funniest and most formidable actresses ever and it’s an incredible privilege to give them the opportunity to run riot on Netflix,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “The show created for them by Marta and Howard is warm, very funny and anything but wholesome. We can’t wait.”

Now we just need to get Dolly involved!

Final The Amazing Spider-man 2 Trailer – Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan & Paul Giamatti unite against Andrew Garfield

March 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With fans already moaning that they thought there were too many villains in The Amazing Spider-man 2, earlier promos have concentrated on Electro and suggested it would be mainly him Spidey was up against. However this final trailer changes tack by concentrating on the fact it’s not just Jamie Foxx’s electro, but also Paul Giamatti’s Rhino and Dane DeHaan’s Goblin – and they’re all uniting against our hero.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.
‘It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.’

The movie is due in UK cinemas this April, with a May 2nd US release set. [Read more…]

The Giver Trailer – Jeff Bridges guides Brenton Thwaites in a dystopian future

March 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jeff Bridges has been trying to get an adaptation of The Giver off the ground for over around two decades, but it’s only now, with the popularity of other young adult movies, that it’s finally happened.

We can take our first proper look at the movie at The Weinstein Company has released the first trailer.

The Giver ‘centers on Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. The film is based on Lois Lowry’s beloved young adult novel of the same name, which was the winner the 1994 Newbury Medal and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

Jonas’ new position sees him cut off from everyone he knows and he is mentored by the former Receiver of Memories, known as The Giver (Bridges). The great cast also includes Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgard, Katie Holmes and Taylor Swift. It’s due out in August.

And it certainly seems to be Brenton Thwaites day, as we only just posted the trailer for his film, The Signal. [Read more…]

The Signal Trailer – Brenton Thwaites may be in contact with alien life

March 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The sci-fi flick The Signal premiered at Sundance back in June, and while it often takes a long time to get movies from the festival onto cinemas screens, the film is already being lined up for a June 13th US release, and the trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Three college students on a road trip across the Southwest experience a detour; the tracking of a computer genius who has already hacked into MIT and exposed security faults. The trio find themselves drawn to an eerily isolated area when suddenly, everything goes dark. When one of the students, Nic, regains consciousness, he is in a waking nightmare… The Signal stars Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp and Laurence Fishburne and is directed by William Eubank.’

It got some great buzz at Sundance so should be one to watch out for, even if the trailer is a bit mysterious. [Read more…]

March 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

channing-tatum-vanity-fair2-thumb
For a couple of years now Channing Tatum has been talking about how he wants to direct. Nothing has quite come together yet (although he may end up helming Magic Mike 2), but he’s now added another possibility to his development slate.

Deadline reports Tatum and producing partner Reid Carolin are eyeing an adaptation of Jo Nesbø’s upcoming novel The Son as their joint directorial debut. Channing Tatum being is also likely to star.

The novel is about a young man who is in prison after confessing to crimes he didn’t commit. The young man then break out of prison to avenge his father’s death, as well as trying to find out to sort out the crimes he confessed to.

Woody Harrelson Joins The Amazing Cast Of Triple Nine

March 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

woody-harrelsonWoody Harrelson has had a good few months, starting with a massive hit with Hunger Games: Catching Fire, followed by a critically lauded turn in HBO’s True Detective. Now he’s got a new big-screen role as he’s signed on to star opposite the likes of Casey Affleck and Cate Blanchett in the cop drama Triple Nine, according to Deadline.

The movie is about a group of crooked cops who are blackmailed by the Russian Mafia to pull off a seemingly impossible heist. The only way to do it appears to be to kill an unsuspecting rookie cop, but things take a left turn when the young man they’ve targeted gets away.

In case you were wondering, the police code ‘triple nine’ means there is an officer down.

Harrelson will play Sergeant Jeffrey Allen, the uncle of Casey Affleck’s character. The awesome cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Christoph Waltz, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Winslet, Aaron Paul, Teresa Palmer, Gal Gadot and Michael Pena.

John Hillcoat (Lawless) is set to direct from a script by Matt Cook. Triple Nine will shoot this summer.

Tilda Swinton, Ezra Miller & Barhad Abdi May Have A Trainwreck

March 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tilda-swintonJudd Apatow’s Trainwreck may have a fairly little known name at its centre – Amy Schumer – but the director is ensuring there are more interesting names around her. Already cast are Bill Hader, Brie Larson and Colin Quinn.

Now the likes of THR, TheWrap & Variety reports he’s court loads more actors, including recent Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi, comedian Mike Birbiglia, Girls’ Jon Glaser, SNL’s Vanessa Bayer, WWE superstar John Cena, Perks of Being A Wallflower’s Ezra Miller and the superlative Tilda Swinton. It’s certainly an eclectic but interesting mix.

It’s not known who they will play, but that’s not too much of a surprise as Apatow has been keeping his cards close to his chest about this one, other than that it’s about ‘a basket case who tries to rebuild her life’. It’s also known a best friend/co-worker and a parent play a major role.

It’ll be in cinemas July 2015.
