Tilda Swinton holds a rainbow flag in Moscow’s Red Square

A few months ago Tilda Swinton made a stand for gay rights in Russia by standing in front of St. Basil’s Cathedral holding a rainbow flag. Now she’s made another worthy gesture, donating $1,000 towards the funeral of prominent Russian gay rights activist Alexey Davydov.

Davydov died last week at the age of just 36 following a prolonged illness. An online campaign was launched shortly afterwards to find the money to pay for a funeral.

Swinton’s donation was revealed by fellow activist Nikolai Alekseyev (one of the organisers of Moscow Pride), who Tweeted, ‘BRAVO and HUGE THANKS to British actress Tilda Swinton for the donation to cover the funerals of our friend and activist Alexey Davydov.’

He added: “Thanks to all who took part in this generous civil act… Alexey was a hero and now he will have a fitting funeral. I am pleased we were able to help in our small way but all the credit belongs to the generous donors and Alexey’s brave activist friends.”

September 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

More and more companies are trying to get a slice of the booming market for animation, and they’ve been joined by the independently made The Nut Job, which is actually a Canadian and South Korean co-production.

It’s got a big name cast though, with Liam Neeson, Will Arnett, Katherine Heigl, Brendan Fraser, Stephen Lang, Maya Rudolph, and Jeff Dunham.

The 3D film is set in ‘in fictional Oakton and follows the travails of Surly (voiced by Will Arnett), a mischievous squirrel, and his rat friend Buddy, who plan a nut store heist of outrageous proportions and unwittingly find themselves embroiled in a much more complicated and hilarious adventure.’

It’s out in the US in mid-January, but no UK release is currently set. [Read more…]

New Free Birds Trailer – Woody Harrelson & Owen Wilson try to change Thanksgiving

September 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Turkeys aren’t well-known for their time-traveling abilities, but that’s being remedied with Free Birds, a new CG animated movie from Horton Hears A Who! helmer Jimmy Hayward.

The film features the voices of Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson as two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks who must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history – and get turkey off the Thanksgiving menu for good.

Amy Poehler, Dan Fogler, Lesley Nicol, George Takei, Colm Meaney, Keith David, Eddie “Piolin” Sotelo, and Dwight Howard also provide voices for the film. It won’t be too surprising to hear this is getting a November 1st pre-Thanksgiving release in the US, with it coming to the UK on November 29th. [Read more…]

Little Miss Sunshine Directors To Helm I’m Proud Of You, About US Children’s TV Legend Mister Rogers

September 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mister-rogersEvery country has its children’s TV legends and there are few bigger in the US than Mister Rogers, whose show Mister Rogers Neighborhood ran from 1968-2001, ensuring he was part of generations of childhoods. It also means that plenty of film execs have fond memories that has resulted in a film about his being in the works.

Directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine) have signed on to direct I’m Proud of You, based on Tim Madigan’s memoir about his friendship with Mister (Fred) Rogers of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood according to The Wrap.

The description from the  author’s website says, ‘It began as another newspaper assignment, a celebrity profile of the children’s television icon. But in Fred Rogers, Texas journalist Tim Madigan found more than a fascinating subject. From their first meeting in 1995, at Rogers’ invitation, the two became unlikely friends, a deep and abiding relationship that lasted until Rogers’ death in 2003.

‘In that time, Madigan found Rogers to be much more than the calm and compassionate personality of television. He was a person of unique human greatness who embodied love, compassion and wisdom his every waking moment. He was the transcendent being who guided Madigan through periods of life-threatening depression and the tragic death of a sibling and helped him heal his difficult relationship with his father.’

Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster (The Motel Life) wrote the screenplay. It hasn’t been announced when it will shoot.

Bryce Dallas Howard May Go To Jurassic World

September 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bryce-dallas-howardIt may be the 21st Century, but a lot of the time it’s still true that when an actress becomes a mother, they tend to take fewer film roles (while the husbands continue as if nothing had happened). That seems to be true of Bryce Dallas Howard, who’s only made a few film in the last few years and they’ve tended to be supporting roles in movies such as Twilight: Eclipse, The Help and 50/50.

However it looks like she may be jumping into a lead role in Jurassic World according to TheWrap. The only details known about the film is that it will a brand new dinosaur and will return to Isla Nublar, the island from the first movie. It’s rumoured that by the time the film begins the disaster of Jurassic Park has been forgotten and it’s operating as a theme park. Unsurprisingly, things go terribly wrong.

David Oyelowo, and Garrett Hedlund has also been said to be in contention for role, but it’s not certainly is Universal is still courting them. However Howard is said to be in full negotiations.

Colin Trevorrow is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with his Safety Not Guaranteed collaborator Derek Connolly. A June 12th, 2015 release has been set.

September 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rob-riggleFilming on Dumb and Dumber To is finally underway, but the cast is still coming together with the news that Rob Riggle has joined the movie, according to Variety. There are also reports that Jennifer Lawrence has shot a secret cameo.

It isn’t certain who Lawrence will be or how big her role will be. There’s always a chance she could be the sick daughter.

Christoph Waltz & Emma Stone Wanted For Tarzan, Opposite Alexander Skarsgard

September 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

christoph-waltzOften when a movie gets delayed, it’s a polite way of saying we’ll never hear anything about it again. It appeared that might happen to David Yates’ new live-action take on Tarzan, when in April Warner put the brakes on due to the high budget. Even the production office was shut down, which is usually a sign of impending doom.

However it now appears things are gearing up again, with Variety reporting Christoph Waltz has entered negotiations to join the film, while TheWrap adds that Emma Stone is the top choice to play Jane.

They’d join the previously cast Alexander Skarsgard, who’s still attached to the title role. However it appears that while Warner wants Stone, she may turn down the movie due to her crowded schedule. Margot Robbie is the other main actress being eyed, who may be more free to take the role. Jessica Chastain was previously said to in the running, but it appears she’s no longer involved.

If he does sign up, Waltz would play a military type, but there’s no more info than that.

Despite the problems, it’s believed Tarzan is close to a greenlight, with plans to shoot next summer.
