Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan Joins Guardians of the Galaxy

karen-gillanA lot of people loved Karen Gillan as Amy Pond in Doctor Who, and now it looks like she’ll be introduced to an even bigger audience, as THR reports she’s joining the growing cast of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

She’s set to play the film’s lead female villain, although her exact identity was not revealed. Lee Pace is playing the primary villain, who also has not been officially identified, but is believed to be Taneleer Tivan, aka The Collector. Ophelia Lovibond is playing one of The Collector’s henchmen.

Chris Pratt is set to star as the Guardians Of The Galaxy’s leader Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord, with Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Zoe Saldana portraying Gamora, and Michael Rooker as Yondu. James Gunn is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Chris McCoy and Nicole Perlman. Production is scheduled to begin next month in the UK.

Milla Jovovich, Nicolas Cage, Wesley Snipes & Jackie Chan In Talks For Expendables 3

Milla-JovovichFor a few months, it’s been rumoured that Nicolas Cage, Jackie Chan and Wesley Snipes were all wanted for The Expendables 3. Today, it has been announced that they are all in “advanced negotiations” with production slated to start this August, and there’s a female name in the mix too, Milla Jovovich.

Nothing is known about about the characters characters they will play, although it’s long been rumoured that Cage is up to play the main villain. More casting announcements are also expected in the near future, with shooting scheduled to begin in August.

Relative newcomer Patrick Hughes (Red Hill) will direct from a script by Sylvester Stallone, who will also, of course, star. (Source: Deadline)

Green Lantern’s Michael Green Rewriting Blade Runner Sequel

Blade-Runner-posterFor a while now, Ridley Scott has been working on a new movie set in the world of Blade Runner. Now it’s got a new writer, as TheWrap reports that Green Lantern scripter Michael Green is in negotiations to take over the Untitled Blade Runner Project screenplay.

Last May that original Blade Runner writer Hampton Fancher was writing this follow-up, but it isn’t known if Michael Green will re-write his script, or start from scratch.

No details have been given regarding the story, except that it will be set several years after the events of Blade Runner. Ridley Scott is directing and, contrary to what was said back in February 2012, the filmmaker is trying to get Harrison Ford to return as Rick Deckard.

Graphic Novel Author Criticises Cannes Palm d’Or Winning Lesbian-Themed Film Based On Her Book

Blue-Is-the-Warmest-Colour-posterA few days ago it was revealed that Abdellatif Kechiche’s Blue Is The Warmest Colour had won the prestigious Cannes Palm d’Or, with much comment about the movie’s lengthy, explicit lesbian sex scene. While some heralded it as a new benchmark for showing female love on-screen as part of a complex, emotional relationship, it appears Julie-Maroh disagrees.

Her opinion is more interesting than most, as she wrote the graphic novel the movie is based on. The movie is about 15-year-old Adele (Adele Exarchopoulos), and her her burgeoning relationship with Emma (Lea Seydoux).

In a blog post, Maroh writes about the sex scene, “I don’t know the sources of information for the director and the actresses (who are all straight, unless proven otherwise) and I was never consulted upstream… Maybe there was someone there to awkwardly imitate the possible positions with their hands, and/or to show them some porn of so-called ‘lesbians’ (unfortunately it’s hardly ever actually for a lesbian audience).

“Because – except for a few passages – this is all that it brings to my mind: a brutal and surgical display, exuberant and cold, of so-called lesbian sex, which turned into porn, and [made] me feel very ill at ease. Especially when, in the middle of a movie theatre, everyone was giggling.

“The heteronormative laughed because they don’t understand it and find the scene ridiculous. The gay and queer people laughed because it’s not convincing, and [they] found it ridiculous. And among the only people we didn’t hear giggling were the potential guys [sic] too busy feasting their eyes on an incarnation of their fantasies on screen.”

However she adds, “As a feminist and lesbian spectator, I cannot endorse the direction Kechiche took on these matters… I’m also looking forward to what other women will think about it. This is simply my personal stance.”

It’ll be interesting to see what others think as the film is released around the world, although due to its explicit nature, the director has suggested it may be cut down in some places, if it becomes a bar to getting distribution. (Via PinkNews)

Cheyenne Jackson Joins Alfred Molina In Ira Sach’s Love is Strange

Cheyenne JacksonBack in January it was revealed that Keep The Lights On director Ira Sachs was busy putting together his next movie, and he’d signed Alfred Molina and Michael Gambon to star. Now another actor has signed up, with Deadline reporting that Cheyenne Jackson is onboard.

The film features Gambon and Molina as Ben and Jorge, a couple who’ve been together a long time and decide to get married in New York now that gay marriage is legal there. However following their nuptials Jorge gets fired, which forces them to temporarily live apart.

Ben moves in with his nephew and his wife (Tracy Letts and Kelly Reilly), while Jorge moves in with Ted (Jackson) and his partner Nahlin, both of whom are police officers.

Jackson is currently starring in Behind The Candelabra, as Liberace’s spurned lover, and recently shot a film adaptation of Richard Alfieri’s Six Dance Lessons In Six Weeks, opposite Gena Rowlands.

Twilight’s Michael Welch Talks About His New Transgender Themed Film

michael-welchTwilight fans will recognise Michael Welch as Mike Newton, the high school student with a crush on Bella, who simply can’t compete due to his lack of being a vampire. Now he’s got a new movie coming up, Boy Meets Girl.

We reported on the movie recently, as it’s a very rare case of a movie about a transgender character, which has actually cast a transgender actor.

Welch has now been talking to Too Fab about being part of the movie, and what he thinks about potential haters. He says, “The world is changing for the better in terms of people accepting and understanding each other. What’s revolutionary about this film is how ‘normal’ it feels, and I think that’s what will ultimately be the key to equal rights for all. As LGBT people become more publicly involved in various elements of society, whether media, government, social institutions such as marriage or military service, or just being out to their friends and family, the rest of society will invariably become more aware and therefore, less fearful. Gay marriage just became legal in 2 more states, and the sky didn’t fall down, the mountains didn’t crumble. Nothing changed except in the lives of those who finally get to express their love in the same way as the rest of us. Eventually, we’re gonna learn that ALL people essentially want the same things, love, respect, dignity, and acceptance.  That’s the theme of this film. It just happens to feature a transgender character. So no, I’m not worried. Haters are gonna hate, but ultimately they get marginalized and discredited over time.”

Boy Meets Girl is described as ‘a tender, human, sex-positive romantic comedy that explores what it means to be “real”: to live and love authentically to the truth of one’s heart, regardless of the sex or small town you’re born into. Our story focuses on Ricky, a beautiful twenty-one year old transgendered girl living in Virginia with dreams of becoming a fashion designer in New York.’

New Pacific Rim Featurette – Take a look at the incredible oversized robot set

While Pacific Rim will undoubtedly feature a lot of CGI, Guillermo Del Toro was keen to do plenty of practical shooting, and that included a four-storey high set of the robots’ head, which was able to move, shake and drop 15 feet so the actors could really react to action. The poor actors were also inside suits attached to enormous, complex machines to make things even more difficult. A new featurette explores that, and it’s well worth a look.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.”

‘When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

‘Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) is directing “Pacific Rim” from a script by Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”).  Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films).  The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.’

Prisoners Trailer – Hugh Jackman loses his daughter, but can Jake Gyllenhaal help?

You could be forgiven for thinking the only Hugh Jackman movie out this year is The Wolverine, but he’s also getting far more serious with Prisoners, and he’s got a great cast surrounding him to do it, including Maria Bello, Terrence Howard, Viola Davis, Melissa Leo, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Paul Dano. Now we’ve got out first trailer, which makes the film look like it could be pretty intense.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Keller Dover (Jackman) is facing every parent’s worst nightmare. His 6-year-old daughter and her young friend are missing, and as minutes turn to hours, panic sets in. The only lead is a dilapidated RV that had been parked on their street. Heading the investigation, Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) arrests its driver, but a lack of evidence forces the only suspect’s release. Knowing his child’s life is at stake, the frantic Dover decides he has no choice but to take matters into his own hands. The desperate father will do whatever it takes to find the girls, but in doing so, may lose himself, begging the question: When do you cross the line between seeking justice and becoming a vigilante?’

This Is The End International Trailer – Seth Rogen and his friends face the apocalypse

This Is The End looks like it could be a lot of fun, with a lot of young comedy actors playing versions of themselves, who have to face the apocalypse coming to get them. Now a new international trailer and a red band TV spot have arrived to make this look like it’ll be even more entertaining.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen head to James Franco‘s house for a party, they’re not surprised to see the likes of Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera, Aziz Ansari, Kevin Hart, Jason Segel, Paul Rudd, Rihanna and Emma Watson.What they are surprised about is when the apocalypse starts right outside their door and many of those friends meet their untimely deaths. That leaves six of the friends (Franco, Rogen, Hill, McBride, Robinson, Baruchel) in survival mode.’

It hits US cinemas on June 12th and arrives in the UK on June 28th.

Final Monsters University Trailer – Everybody wants to scare

It’s not too long now until Monsters University hits cinemas (June 21st in the US and July 12th in the UK), so Disney-Pixar has decided to help up the hype with a final trailer, which is a little heavier on plot and features plenty of new footage.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer.  The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.
