As I Lay Dying Trailer – James Franco takes on a William Faulkner novel

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

You could be forgiven you not knowing James Franco had directed any movies, but he’s actually made quite a few, although the likes of The Broken Tower and Sal have been small, arty and not seen by many people.

Now he’s going a little more high profile with As I Lay Dying, an adaptation of a William Faulkner novel that will be playing at Cannes. Before its festival debut, a trailer has been released, giving us a feel for movie. As with Franco’s other movies, it gives the impression of being made incredibly quickly, which in this case could actually be a bonus.

It charts the story of the Bundren family and their attempts to bury Addie Bundren in the town of Jefferson. [Read more…]

Garrett Hedlund, Riz Ahmed & Toby Kebbell Have Violent Talent

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Garrett Hedlund

Garrett Hedlund

Matthew Michael Carnahan has gained a decent reputation as a screenwriter, having worked on the likes of The Kingdom, State Of Play and the upcoming World War Z. Now he’s heading for the director’s chair with Violent Talent, and Deadline reports he’s lined up a decent cast, including Garrett Hedlund, Riz Ahmed, Toby Kebbell and Margot Robbie.

The film is about ‘Eamon (Hedlund), as he and his two oldest friends Angel and Quan (Kebbell and Ahmed) try to build a criminal empire in a contemporary Chicago, where he feels crime might be the most honest job around.’ There’s no in of Robbie’s character, other than that she is known as Riley.

It’s not clear at the moment when it might shoot.

Hailee Steinfeld Is Going For The Dogs With Sam Worthington

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hailee-steinfeldIn 2010 Hailee Steinfeld scored an Oscar nomination for True Grit, but since then we’ve had the grand total of absolutely no movies from her. That’s not to say she hasn’t been busy though, as she’s got five films in post-production, with various others in the works. Now she’s added another, as Deadline reports Steinfeld has joined the cast of Phillip Noyce’s thriller, For the Dogs.

She’ll star alongside Sam Worthington, who signed up a couple of months ago. The movie is based on a 2007 novel by Kevin Wignall, about a teenager (Steinfeld) who is orphaned after her parents are murdered. She seeks the assistance of an assassin (Worthington) to avenge their deaths, and while the lone assassin is looking for peace and an exit from the tension-filled lifestyle, the girl’s bloodthirst develops, complicating matters quite a bit.

It doesn’t sound too far from True Grit, although rather more contemporary. There’s no news on when it might shoot.

Olivia Wilde & Mark Duplass Get A Reawakening

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

olivia-wildeOlivia Wilde and Mark Duplass will be bringing the dead back to life in the new thriller Reawakening, with Jiro Dreams of Sushi documentary helmer David Gelb set to direct, according to THR.

The movie is about a research team who’ve created a serum that can bring the dead back to life. When the lead doctor’s daughter dies, she is given the serum. As you might expect, things don’t exactly go to plan. and it leads to something less than ideal.

Luke Dawson and Jeremy Slater came up with the script, which certainly has a decent enough premise, although it is one that could be as dreadful as it could be good, depending on the execution.

Arnold Schwarzenegger In Talks For Toxic Avenger Reboot

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

arnold-schwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger’s comeback in The Last Stand didn’t do as well at the box office as he’d hoped, but he’s not giving up and is now close to signing on for a role in the long gestating The Toxic Avenger reboot, according to Variety.

The action star won’t be playing Toxie, but instead will be playing a secondary lead. Details of that character are being kept under wraps for the time being.

Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel C. Mitchell for this remake. Troma’s original Toxic Avenger sprang to life in 1984, telling the story of a meek janitor who is doused with toxic waste and mutates into a head-smashing superhero. The franchise has spawned five feature films, including the soon to be released Toxic Twins: The Toxic Avenger V, and an animated TV series.

It isn’t known when The Toxic Avenger reboot might go into production, but the project is being sold at Cannes, with producers hoping for a 2014 release.

Tom Welling Joins Kevin Costner In Ivan Reitman’s Draft Day

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-wellingIvan Reitman’s Draft Day may have already started shooting, but it’s still adding new cast members, as Smallville star Tom Welling has joined the movie, according to Deadline.

In the movie, Kevin Costner plays the general manager of the Cleveland Browns, who tries to trade up to get the top pick in the NFL Draft. Tom Welling will play veteran NFL quarterback Brian Drew, who is at a crossroads in his playing career. Jennifer Garner, Ellen Burstyn, Denis Leary, Frank Langella, and Chadwick Boseman also star.

Ivan Reitman is directing from a screenplay by Rajiv Joseph, which landed the top spot on the Black List last year.

It’s good news for Welling, who had great success with Smallville, but hasn’t been in a movie since The Fog and Cheaper by the Dozen 2 in 2005, although he did recently shoot a supporting role in the upcoming drama Parkland.

Seth Grahame-Smith Takes Over Gremlins Remake

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

seth-grahame-smithThere’s been talk for several years about remaking Gremlins, but now Warner Bros. seems to be getting serious about it, as Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg have come on board to produce, according to Bloody Disgusting. The studio is currently seeking a director, but it is not known whether Grahame-Smith and Katzenberg will write the screenplay at this point.

Seth Grahame-Smith also wrote the novel and screenplay adaptation for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the screenplay for Dark Shadows, and has an adaptation of his novel Pride, Prejudice and Zombies in development at Lionsgate. Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg are currently writing Beetlejuice 2 for Warner Bros., having previously created the MTV series The Hard Times of RJ Berger together.

Joe Dante directed the original Gremlins, which starred Zach Galligan as a young man who receives a mogwai as a gift from his father, with three explicit rules: do not get them wet, do not feed them after midnight, and do not expose them to bright light. When these rules are broken, the gremlins begin to reproduce and create havoc upon this sleepy town. It’s early days, so it’s not clear how closely the remake will stick to the plot of the original.

Fruitvale Station Trailer – Michael B. Jordan takes on the tragic true-life tale

May 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This year’s Sundance Grand Jury prize winner was Fruitvale Station (it played at the festival just as Fruitvale). Now we get a look at the movie with a trailer for the film.

The film tells the true story of Oscar, a 22-year-old San Francisco Bay resident who crosses paths with friends, enemies, family and strangers on the last day of 2008. By the end of the day, Oscar made national news when cell phone cameras carried by many witnesses documented an extremely over the top display of police force.

The film opens in the US on July 12th. No UK date is currently set. [Read more…]

August: Osage County Trailer – Meryl Streep launches her next Oscar campaign

May 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A very strange thing happened this year – Meryl Streep wasn’t nominated for an Oscar. However on the evidence of this trailer, she’s going for yet another nom with August: Osage County.

Based on Terry Letts’ Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play, the star-packed film also stars Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Abigail Breslin, Chris Cooper, Juliette Lewis, Dermot Mulroney and Sam Shepard.

John Wells directs the film, which is about the dysfunctional Weston family and the daughters who have gone their separate ways, until a crisis brings them back to their Midwestern home. The film should be out later this year. [Read more…]
