Jeremy Irons Worries Same-sex Marriage Will Allow Fathers To Marry Sons

April 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

jeremy-ironsOscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons isn’t a big fan of equal marriage, as he seems to think it’s going to allow fathers to marry sons so that they can avoid inheritance tax (currently no tax is paid if an estate is left to a spouse, although it is if it’s left to a child).

Irons was talking to the Huffington Post, and when asked about same-sex marriage, said, “Could a father not marry his son?”

When it was pointed out that gay marriage wouldn’t legalise incest, he answered, “It’s not incest between men”, as “incest is there to protect us from inbreeding, but men don’t breed.” This led to him worrying fathers will marry sons just for the tax breaks, although it does seem that he genuinely believed incest between a father and son isn’t illegal (which is rather worrying).

He also adds, “It seems to me that now they’re fighting for the name. I worry that it means somehow we debase, or we change, what marriage is. I just worry about that.”

However it doesn’t seem something he’s really thought about it much, so perhaps he should have just kept quiet. He did add, “Everybody whose living with one other person the best of luck in the world because it’s fantastic. Living with another animal, whether it be a husband or a dog, is great. It’s lovely to have someone to love. I don’t think sex matters at all. What it’s called doesn’t matter at all.”

The Purge Trailer – Ethan Hawke protects himself in a speculative thriller

April 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The premise for The Purge sounds a bit daft, but the result could be quite interesting, with Ethan Hawke as a father who has to protect his family from all manner of threats over a 12-hour period. The reason for that is that in a near-future America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity – including murder – becomes legal.

The police can’t be called. Hospitals suspend help. It’s one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking. When an intruder breaks into James Sandin’s (Ethan Hawke) gated community during the yearly lockdown, he begins a sequence of events that threatens to tear a family apart. Now, it is up to James, his wife, Mary (Lena Headey), and their kids to make it through the night without turning into the monsters from whom they hide.

It’s a film that seems to want to make a political point, although we’ll have to wait and see how right or left wing it’s going to lean. [Read more…]

Only God Forgives Red Band Trailer – Ryan Gosling reunites with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn

April 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ryan Gosling and Drive director Nicolas Wining Refn have reunited for the upcoming Only God Forgives, which looks like it’s going to be as tense as their previous effort – although there’s less evidence Drive’s gore in this new red band trailer.

Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.

It should be in cinemas this summer, with Gosling looking all bashed up.

Grown Ups 2 Trailer – Taylor Lautner goes for laughs alongside Sandler, Rock and co.

April 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Is Taylor Lautner funny? Well, it seems like he might be, as he doesn’t do too badly in the trailer for Grown Ups 2.

The movie sees the cast from Grown Ups returns – Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Kevin James, David Spade, Salma Hayek, Maria Bello – for more summertime laughs. Lenny (Adam Sandler) has relocated his family back to the small town where he and his friends grew up. This time around, the grown ups are the ones learning lessons from their kids on a day notoriously full of surprises: the last day of school.

As you’d expect from Sandler, half the jokes seem to be about potentially gay things, because apparently anything that could even possibly be construed as gay is absolutely hilarious! Let’s hope the actual film is laughing with rather than at homosexuality.

Lautner, Milo Ventimiglia and various others join the franchise, which is due to hit cinemas in July. [Read more…]

New posters have shown up online for The Great Gatsy, This Is The End and Pain & Gain, which you can see above and below. The Gatsby poster comes just a few hours before we’ve been promised a new trailer for the Baz Luhrmann’s take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, so look out for that.

Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain sees Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson as two Florida bodybuilder who get caught up in a kidnapping that spirals way out of hand. This Is The End, meanwhile, sees the likes of James Franco, Danny McBride and Jonah Hill playing versions of themselves as they deal with the end of the world in LA.

Abigail Spencer & Timothy Olyphant Join This Is Where I Leave You

April 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

abigail-spencerAbigail Spencer has had a great success recently, although you’d be forgiven for not realising. However she played May in Oz The Great And Powerful. Now she’s got a new role, as Deadline reports that Timothy Olyphant, Ben Schwartz and Spencer have joined the cast of This Is Where I Leave You.

They’ll star alongside the previously cast Jason Bateman, Rose Byrne, Tina Fey, Kathryn Hahn, Jane Fonda, and Corey Stoll in the movie, which is based on Jonathan Tropper’s book of the same name. It follows four adult siblings who reunite for their father’s funeral. Their trip home turns out to be longer than expected, when they find out their dad’s dying wish is for all four of them to spend a week in the house they grew up in. Inevitably this causes long simmer tensions to emerge.

Olyphant is set to play Horry, a former flame of Fey’s Wendy, Schwartz is the rabbi who wants everyone to think he’s cool, while Spender is Bateman’s wife, who is cheating on him with his boss.

Shawn Levy will direct from a screenplay by Jonathan Tropper. Production is scheduled to begin this June in New York.

Liam Hemsworth Takes On Action Sci-fi The Raven

April 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Liam Hemsworth in The Last Song

Liam Hemsworth has starred in the likes of The Last Song, The Expendables 2 and The Hunger Games, but its brother Chris who’s probably still the most famous. Now Liam is hoping to become an action hero in his own right with the Raven, according to Deadline.

Between Hunger Games movies it’s likely he’s going to star in a movie is based on the acclaimed 2010 short from Peruvian director Ricardo de Montreuil. Named after its main character, Chris ‘The Raven’; Black, the six-minute short is set in a dystopian future where Los Angeles is ruled by an oppressive regime that’s relentlessly seeking to destroy our hero because he possesses an extraordinary power.

Universal snapped up feature rights to the short, impressed by its look and effects, despite being made on a very low budget. Michael Gilio and Justin Marks have been hired to write the screenplay, with Hemsworth now attached to play the title character.

Richard Linklater Going For A Walk In The Woods With Robert Redford & Nick Nolte

April 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

richard-linklaterRobert Redford has been attached to an adaptation of Bill Bryson’s A Walk In The Wood for a long time. Originally it was going to reteam him with Paul Newman, but Paul’s ill health and eventual death prevented that. For a while Nick Nolte has been attached to Newman’s role and now Richard Linklater has signed up to direct, according to the LA Times.

Chris Columbus and Barry Levinson have previously been attached to helm the movie, but hopefully it will actually be able to move forward with Linklater. The project is based on the popular travel memoir by Bill Bryson, who returned home to America after spending over 20 years in England and decided to hike the Appalachian Trail. He did it with an old friend, who was a former drug addict who wasn’t prepared for the arduous trek. The journey forced both men to confront their lives and the realities of aging. Robert Redford will play Bill Bryson, with Nick Nolte portraying his friend, Stephen Katz.

Richard Russo wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, which was supervised by Robert Redford, who is also producing. Redford commented, “A Walk in the Woods is the kind of movie that has something to say but can also be really commercial because it’s just so funny. It will be nice to get back to doing a comedy.”

Shooting will begin later this autumn.

Nicholas Hoult Goes To Dark Places With Charlize Theron & Chloe Moretz

April 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nicholas Hoult

Nicholas Hoult  might not have had as much success with Jack the Giant Slayer as he’d hoped, but he’s still one of the hottest young actors around. He’s currently heading for the X-Men: Days Of Future Past set and after that he’ll star in the Dark Places, alongside Charlize Theron and Chloe Moretz, according to Deadline.

The project is based on the Gillian Flynn novel about Libby Day (Charlize Theron), a woman who is still haunted by the massacre of her family 25 years earlier. As a child, Libby testified in court that her brother was the killer. However, when an organisation known as The Kill Club begins investigating the case, trying to prove her brother’s innocence, Libby is forced to face her past once again and realise there are more suspects out there. Nicholas Hoult is set to play Lyle, the awkward treasurer of The Kill Club.

Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah’s Key) is directing from his own adapted screenplay. Shooting should start later this year.
