Adam Shankman Helming This Is Where I Leave You Adaptation

February 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

News of an adaptation of Jonathan Tropper’s funny novel, This Is Where I Leave You, first emerged in 2009, when Life As We Know It helmer Greg Berlanti signed up to write and direct. He’s since moved on, but Variety reports Hairspray and Rock of Ages director Adam Shankman is now in talks to to take on Tropper’s book.

Tropper’s darkly comic book is about a father who dies and requests that his dysfunctional family sits Shivah for him for seven days. Judd Foxman is thrown into a downward spiral when he gets word of his father’s death, hot on the heels of the revelation that his wife is cheating on him. Forced to return to his hometown and face his family, Judd must confront who he’s become and figure out who he wants to be, while dealing with a never-ending parade of family conflict.

It’s not known when the movie might shoot, especially as the film is just one of several Shankman is developing. Other projects include a new version of The Nutcracker.

Dean Parisot Set To Direct Red 2

February 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For quite a while now Summit Entertainment has been mulling over the idea of making a sequel to Red. The Bruce Willis action flick wasn’t a gargantuan hit at cinemas, but it outdid expectation and then did really well on DVD and that seems to have convinced the studio a follow-up is worth it, as THR reports they’ve hired Dean Parisot to direct Red 2.

Robert Schwentke, director of the first film, opted not to return for round two, and so the job’s gone to the Galaxy Quest and Fun With Dick & Jane helmer. Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman are all likely to return (although if you’ve seen Red, you’ll be wondering how at least one of the actors will manage to make an appearance in the flick, seeing as their character’s supposed to be dead), but no deals are in place yet.

There’s no news on the storyline either, although Erich and Jon Hoeber, who wrote the screenplay for the first film have also penned the sequel. Production is scheduled for later this year, most likely after Willis completes Die Hard 5.

Michael Fassbender Boards Celtic Warrior Cuchulain Movie

February 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Fassbender is a very busy and in-demand man, but he’s finding time to develop a project alongside screenwriter Ronan Bennett (Public Enemies) about the legendary Celtic warrior Cuchulain.

The project will be set in Northern Ireland and is based on the Ulster Cycle, a series of Irish legends that date back to the 8th Century. The story revolves around King Conchobar and his Uliad Tribe’s conflict with Queen Mebh’s Conchatta Tribe. Fassbender will be Cuchulain, Conchobar’s nephew who possesses super-human fighting skills. The most famous of these tales is the Cattle Raid of Cooley, where Cuchulain manages to fend off an entire army sent to steal Conchobar’s prized white bull.

Fassbender and Bennett have raised development funds through Finn McCool Films, although no studio is attached to the project at the moment, however the actor is so hot at the moment, finding full funding shouldn’t be too much of a problem. (Source: Variety)

John Turturro & Rob Corddry Circling Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain

February 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It was announced last week that after years trying to get it going, Michael Bay was finally going to shoot Pain & Gain (before heading back to the world of giant robots with the fourth Transformers movie). Now he’s busy casting the movie, with the latest news being that Bay may reteam with Transformers star John Turturro, while Rob Corddry has also signed up for the film.

Pain and Gain is based on a series of articles from the Miami New Times, and sees Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg as two Sun Gym employees who kidnap a business man, torture him, and leave him for dead, only to fail and have the man come back seeking revenge.

The businessman was originally set to be played by Albert Brooks, and it’s said Ed Harris has also been circling the part. However they seem to be off the radar now as Latino Review reports it looks like this the role is going to Turturro. And it sounds like a good fit to us.

Variety meanwhile says that Hot Tub Time Machine star Rob Corddry will portray John Mese, a former bodybuilder who now owns the gym where Mark Wahlberg’s character trains. He unwillingly gets roped into the extortion scheme because of his background as an accountant and notary.

More casting is expected in the next couple of weeks, with Michael Bay shooting soon.

Kyle Chandler’s Gonna Hunt Bin Laden For Director Kathryn Bigelow

February 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After Osama Bin Laden was killed, it appeared Kathryn Bigelow would be going into production incredibly quickly on a movie about the Navy SEAL team who tracked him down. However the film is still to start shooting, and has become a bit of a political football, with some accusing President Obama of giving Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal too much access to the covert mission.

However things are moving forward, with the latest news being that Deadline report Friday Night Lights and Super 8 Kyle Chandler has signed up to play a CIA agent in the drama (although his role is yet to be confirmed). Chandler joins a cast which includes Jason Clarke, Chris Pratt, Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton, Mark Strong, and Édgar Ramírez.

It isn’t known when production will begin on the movie, although it can’t be too long now! It’s also uncertain when it’ll get a name.

Anna Friel, Tamsin Egerton & Imogen Poots Join King of Soho

February 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just what the world needs, a movie about Channel 5, Daily Express and porn empire owner Paul Raymond. However, with Michael Winterbottom at the helm, you have to hope it’ll be somewhat subversive and interesting. Now Variety reports Actresses Anna Friel, Tamsin Egerton, and Imogen Poots have joined the cast of The King of Soho.

The film tell the story of Raymond (Steve Coogan) who was dubbed The King of Soho because of the vast fortune he built through real estate properties and his pornographic productions, largely revolving around London’s Soho area. The plot will focus on both his personal and professional life, but it isn’t known what roles Anna Friel, Tamsin Egerton, and Imogen Poots will play.

Winterbottom is set to direct from a screenplay by Matt Greenhalgh (Nowhere Boy, Control), with the director reuniting with Coogan after 24 Hour Party People, Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, and The Trip for director. Hopefully they’ll be able to bring a Party People sensibility to this story of how someone who built him empire on sex eventually ended up in the heart of the mainstream.

I Am Legend 2 Coming Together With Will Smith Circling

February 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Believe it or not, but the last time we saw Will Smith on screen was in Seven Pounds in 2008, and his last bona fide hit was the previous year’s I Am Legend. While he’s got Men In Black III later this year and After Earth in 2013, it appears he’s also thinking about returning to the rather empty I Am Legend world.

Will’s not yet signed to star, but his Overbrook Entertainment production company is moving forward with what’s believed to be a sequel to I Am Legend (not, as previously rumoured, as prequel), and according to Deadline, Arash Amel has signed on to write the screenplay, with Akiva Goldsman producing.

The plan is for Will Smith to return as Robert Neville, who was one of the last men left on earth after a virus wiped out most of the earth’s population. However, Will Smith won’t commit to starring in the project until the script is ready. If he is coming back, it raises questions about exactly how they plan to bring back Neville after the events of I Am Legend

It also isn’t known if I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence plans to direct the sequel.

Kristen Bell Put Off Marriage By Lack Of Equality

February 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kristen Bell and comedian/actor Dax Shepard have been dating for a long time, but have never gone down the aisle and gotten married. The actress often gets asked about it, but has only now decided to divulge the reason why.

The Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Veronica Mars star tells The Advocate, ‘I get a ton of questions about when Dax and I are getting married. I usually blow them off because it’s nobody’s business. To be honest with you – and this is the first time I’ve ever said this to a journalist, but it feels like the perfect time and place – the reason we’re not rushing to get married is because I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my best friends. That’s why we’ve been so hesitant.’

‘Dax and I have talked about it a lot, and this issue is very important to both of us. We’re just standing up for what we believe in. Period.’

Bell isn’t the only Hollywood celeb who has decided not to marry while that right is denied to same sex couples. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie also made a pledge not to marry until equality had been achieved (although Brad recently said ‘I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out’), and NCIS’s Pauley Perette and her fiance Thomas Arklie have done the same.

Bell is hopeful though that marriage equality will be achieved, saying ‘In about 10 years, knock on wood, I think we’re going to be embarrassed as a nation about our behavior on this issue. It’s going to be exactly like what happened in 1970, when people were like, ‘Whoa, 1960 sucked. We should’ve let everyone ride the bus.”

Bell has plenty more to say about her gay friends and thoughts of LGBT issues over at The Advocate, so head over there and have a read.

‘I get a ton of questions about when Dax and I are getting married,’ she tells The Advocate. ‘I usually blow them off because it’s nobody’s business. To be honest with you — and this is the first time I’ve ever said this to a journalist, but it feels like the perfect time and place — the reason we’re not rushing to get married is because I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my best friends. Cuba Gooding Jr’s Dad Asked Tom Cruise If He Was Gay

February 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rumours that Tom Cruise is secretly gay have followed him around ever since his earliest days in Hollywood, despite there being little substantive evidence that it’s true. However few people have dared to directly ask him about it, except for Cuba Gooding Jr’s father, that is!

During an appearance on tonight Graham Norton Show, Cuba recounted what happened when his dad visited him on the set of Jerry Maguire. Gooding Jr. says, “He gave Tom Cruise a hug and said, ‘I love you man. Now seriously, are you gay or not?’ I almost fainted and thought, please Lord, let me disappear. Tom just laughed and said ‘no’.”

Cuba then jokingly says that he subsequently banned his father from the film set.

Cruise has long dealt with gay rumours and on occasion he’s even sued when men have tried make money by claiming to have slept with him (it should be noted there’s been little evidence the people he sued were telling the truth). Some have suggested he encouraged the rumours when he was a young actor working his way up the fame ladder, but has since been unable to get rid of them, despite marriages to Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes.

Brett Ratner Directing Pro-Gay Film Series For GLAAD

February 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Brett Ratner may have thought he was just making a flip comment when he said at a screening of his recent movie Tower Heist, ‘Rehearsal’s for fags’, but he’s still feeling the fallout from it.

Within a few days he’d been made to step down from his job as the producer of the Oscar ceremony, had to make a series of public apologies, got a “well-deserved earful from many of the people I admire most”, and discovered that many in Tinsel Town didn’t want anything to do with him. In his favour, from the moment the comment went public, he has sincerely seemed to want to make amends for what he’s well aware was a thoughtless, insensitive thing to say.

His rehabilitation continues with the news that he’s agreed to produce and direct a GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) video campaign to promote equality for gay and trans people. The video series will feature celebrities, athletes, musicians and politicians speaking out in support of equality. Participants will share personal stories about why and how they support gay and trans equality.

Ratner said of the project: “Working together with GLAAD has been a very positive and enlightening experience for me, and I could not be more pleased to be developing this crucial campaign to help educate people that we all share the same humanity. I am excited to get to work on this program and hope that minds and hearts are opened by what we create.”

Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs and Communications at GLAAD said: “Straight allies are crucial to creating a culture in which LGBT people are respected and supported. We look forward to working with Brett and these other inspiring Americans who are speaking out and standing up for their LGBT friends, family members, neighbors and coworkers.”
