The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (Cinema Review)

November 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman
Director: Francis Lawrence
Running Time: 127 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: November 19th 2015 (UK)

Here we have the end of a franchise that initially I didn’t think I would like, but which I have been impressed with over the years. Yet another teen book sensation transitioned onto the big screen, and on the surface The Hunger Games (2012) seemed like a tween rip-off of the excellent Battle Royal (2000). However, it was so much more than what I was expecting and its sequel Catching Fire (2013) is one of those rare sequels that is better than its predecessor.

As Hollywood trends seem fit, the third and final book, Mockingjay, was split into two movies a la Harry Potter, Divergent and Twilight. But this trend generates more money for the studio and the audience gets more time with the characters and story that they love. Everyone (in theory) wins, although with Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014) the audience was left hungry for more (pun intended). [Read more…]

Warcraft: The Beginning Trailer – Into the fantasy world with Travis Fimmel & Ben Foster

November 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

warcraft-poster1-slideFrom the evidence of this trailer, Warcraft: The Beginning certainly looks like it’s going after Middle Earth’s fantasy crown. It definitely seems inspired by Peter Jackson’s Tokien movies while also doing a good job of feeling like it’s set in the world of the Warcraft computer game.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.

‘So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something.

‘Directed by Duncan Jones (Moon,Source Code) and written by Charles Leavitt andJones, the film starring Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Rob Kazinsky and Daniel Wuis a Legendary Pictures, Blizzard Entertainment and Atlas Entertainment production.’

It’ll be in cinemas next June. Take a look at the trailer below.

October 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

absolutely-fabulous-film-pic1Jennifer Saunders has been talking about it for years, but now it’s actually happening, as she and Joanna Lumley are on set to make Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. As well the main stars, other returnees include Julia Sawalha as Saffy, Jane Horrocks as Bubble and June Whitfield as Mother.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Appropriate for their big screen debut, Edina and Patsy are still oozing glitz and glamour, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London’s trendiest hotspots. Blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, they become entangled in a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forevermore! In true Ab Fab style, the cast will be joined by a host of A-list stars from the acting, music and fashion worlds.’

“I am thrilled and excited to finally start filming. We are all on the Sanatogen and hoping for the best,” said Saunders.

The movie is out in 2016, as they recently launched a search to find a hundred drag queens, it’ll be as camp as ever.

New Eastender Riley Carter Millington Will Be British Soap’s First Major Transgender Character Played By A Transgender Actor

October 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Riley-Carter-Millington-slideCoronation Street was the first soap in the world to have a permanent transgender character – in the form of Hayley Cropper, who was with the show from 1998 to 2014. However Hayley was still played by a cisgender actor, albeit a very good one in the form of Julie Hesmondhalgh.

Now though rival UK soap, Eastenders, is adding an ongoing character who, for the first time in any British serialised drama, will be played by a transgender actor, as the BBC has announced the addition of the rather cute Riley Carter Millington to the show.

Here’s the press release anouncing the news: Riley Carter Millington, 21, will be joining the cast of EastEnders as Kyle, a transgender character. Riley’s casting is the first time a UK television soap opera has ever had a transgender actor playing a transgender character in a continuing role.

Dominic Treadwell-Collins, Executive Producer, announced earlier this year that he was creating a transgender character and he was determined to have a transgender actor in the role. Following that announcement, a number of transgender actors put themselves forward for the role and, as well as working alongside groups within the transgender community, EastEnders undertook workshops to find an actor. As soon as they found Riley, the character of Kyle was developed and created.

EastEnders is Riley’s first television role. Riley’s first appearance as Kyle will be on screen this month (October 2015) but little will be known about his mysterious character for quite some time. Following this brief appearance, Riley will return permanently at the end of the year.

Speaking of joining EastEnders, Riley said “I am extremely excited to be joining EastEnders.  I can honestly say that I have now fulfilled my two biggest dreams – to be living my life as a man and to be an actor. I cannot wait to really get stuck in with filming and I look forward to seeing what is in store for my character.”

Dominic Treadwell- Collins, Executive Producer adds “From Mark Fowler’s HIV to Colin and Barry’s first gay kiss, EastEnders has always led the way in changing audience’s perceptions about ‘difference’ – and ultimately making the world a better place.  It has been my intention for a long time to cast a trans actor playing a trans role – and we have been so careful to ensure that we cast the right actor for the part. I’ve sat in many acting workshops over the years with our Casting Executive Julia Crampsie and her team – but never have we been so moved by the incredible life stories and wealth of talent that we experienced over our several weeks of workshops with transgender actors. The people we met showed us a strength and bravery that took our breath away – and to go through as much as they have while maintaining humour and a positive view on the world is testament to what special people we met.

“In Riley, we have found not just a talented actor but also an inspirational young man whose warmth immediately comes through the screen. And this isn’t about tokenism.  Alex Lamb and his story team have worked with Riley to create an EastEnders character who is fresh and relatable – but also comes with his own stock of secrets and is going to be thrown right into one of our biggest stories for the end of the year. I hope that the audience will take Riley and his character to their hearts as quickly as everyone here at EastEnders has done.” [Read more…]

mockingjay-part-2-poster2-slideOn November 19th we’ll get to see how The Hunger Games series comes to an end with Mockingjay – Part 2. It’s certainly been quite a ride to get here, with some really good movies which have become box office titans.

Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale [Liam Hemsworth], Finnick [Sam Claflin], and Peeta [Josh Hutcherson] – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to liberate the citizens of Panem, and stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her.

What’s Gay At The 2015 BFI London Film Festival?

Still from Closet Monster

Every spring the BFI hosts Flare, the London LGBT Film Festival, but the British Film Institute certainly doesn’t believe that just because the gays have their own fest, it means they shouldn’t screen gay-themed movies elsewhere.

Indeed the upcoming BFI London Film Festival, which runs from 7-18 October, includes a great selection of LGBT-themed movies, including Todd Hayne’s Oscar tipped Carol, which gets its UK Premiere as part of the festival on Wednesday 14th October at the Odeon Leicester Square.

So what other LGBT-themed movies are screening? Well, here are some of the highlights (as provided by the BFI): [Read more…]

Roland Emmerich’s Stonewall Movie Meets Mixed Reviews Following Toronto Film Festival Premiere

September 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

stonewall-brick-slideThere was a huge amount of controversy and calls for a boycott following the release of the trailer for Roland Emmerich’s Stonewall, due to the fact it made it look like the whole thing was solely about a cisgender, young, pretty, white guy, and that it would therefore remove the key contribution of trans and people of color to the 1969 riots.

However, others said that as it was just  trailer, it might be best to wait until the entire film had been screened. Now it’s recieved it premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and if the first reviews are to be believed, the movie isn’t the triumph its director might have hoped.

In a Guardian review titled ‘There’s a riot going on! Pity Roland Emmerich missed it’, Henry Barnes writes, ‘It’s still difficult for gay cinema to pass into the mainstream. Emmerich, who put his own money into making the film, should be cheered for giving it a shot. Unfortunately the compromises he’s made leave Stonewall feeling neutered. A member of the Mattachine Society makes a speech about how gay men should assimilate. “Wearing a suit and tie will make them realise they’re just like you,” he says. Stonewall tries the same trick. By trying to disguise itself as a coming-of-age romance, it hides the real story underneath.’

Henry DeBruge in Variety, isn’t much more postive, saying ‘While it’s encouraging to see such a subject treated with the same grandiosity afforded alien invasions, particularly at a moment when gay rights hold such currency, representation-starved audiences deserve more than this problematic collection of stereotypes, which lacks the galvanizing power of such recent we-shall-overcome triumphs as “Selma” or “Milk,” and won’t draw anywhere near their numbers.’

In The Hollywood Reporter, David Rooney is a bit more of a fan, although he certainly doesn’t give the movie a rave, saying, ‘While Stonewall hits every obvious, manipulative button with a forceful hand, it’s also consistently engaging, relating experiences grounded in the turbulent past that should resonate for many in our more complacent present.’

As for the question of how the movie treat people of color and trans characters, he notes, ‘Diversity representation mostly functions as colorful window-dressing, with notes of humor pretty much confined to routine sassy attitude, and when the riot starts, the Wonder Bread lead gets to throw the first brick. But the secondary characters are treated with affection and respect, and far from sidelined during the climactic clash.’

John Hazelton in Screen Daily also find issues with the movie, saying ‘Stonewall almost lets its tale of a young gay man finding his way in New York City overshadow its account of the 1969 riots that give the film its title and led to the birth of the gay liberation movement. That might not have mattered if the personal story had been more satisfying, but as it is this passion project from blockbuster director Roland Emmerich… feels like a strangely squandered opportunity.’

The Playlist meanwhile doesn’t mince its words, saying, ‘While Emmerich’s intentions may be pure, he lacks the delicacy, intelligence, and skill to do right by a premise rife with potential for disaster — a topic in which the man is all too well-versed… The insulting obviousness with which characters make declarations about the Change That Must Come and the Injustice That Has Been Suffered For Too Long strip the film of any potential for resonant poignance with its intended audience. Emmerich’s freedom fighters speak not like human beings, but political mouthpieces designed to express the simplest ideas for the simplest-minded audiences.’

It certainly doesn’t bode well for the film, which was already facing controversy and resistance. However Emmerich’s career has been marked by getting unfavourable reviews (for films such as 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow) and yet making money at the box office, so he’ll be hoping for the same when the film reaches US cinemas later this week.

You can take a look at a clip from the movie below. [Read more…]
