Ralph Fiennes Plans Film About Bisexual Dancer Rudolph Nureyev

June 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

ralph-fiennes-rudolph-nureyevWith Coriolanus and The Invisible Woman Ralph Fiennes has shown he doesn’t just have talent in front of the camera, he’s a pretty good director too. Where to order Kamagra, here https://www.hksurgeon.com/kamagra/ cheapest Sildenafil no prescription. While Fiennes also starred in both those movies, he now plans to make a film he won’t also appear in, about legendary dancer Rudolph Nureyev.

Screen Daily says that it’s not known what the exact plot will be, but that ‘the film is understood not to be a biopic but instead charts a specific incident in the life of the celebrated dancer who defected from the Soviet Union to the West in 1961, despite KGB efforts to stop him.’

He’s certainly a figure who did plenty of things you could make an interesting movie about, not least his defection and a dancing career that made his one of the most famous ballet practitioners in history. It may also take in his sexuality. Nureyev largely had relationships with men (although he did date women as a young man, and there are rumours about his seducing prominent ladies during the height on his fame), mostably with fellow dancer Erik Bruhn, with whom he had an on-again-off-again relationship for over 25 years. However if the movie takes place before Nureyev defected that relationship won’t feature, as they didn’t meen until Rudolph went West. It’ll be interesting to see how his sexuality features in the movie.

Sadly the great dancer died of AIDS in 1993, aged 53.

Tom Holland Is The New Spider-man, With Jon Watts Directing Standalone Film

June 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-hollandA few months ago came the major announcement that Spider-man would be joining the Marvel Universe with an appearance in Captain America: Civil War. However despite the fact that movie has been shooting for a while now, no new Spidey was announced to replace the sadly departing Andrew Garfield.

That’s changed now though, as the young man who’s seemed like the frontrunner for several weeks, Tom Holland, has landed the role. Yep, it’s another Brit.

The accompanying press release says that the ‘studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in The Impossible, Wolf Hall, and the upcoming In the Heart of the Sea, and by a series of complex screen tests.’ And unlike either Garfield or Tobey Maguire, he is actually still a teenager.

He will first been seen in the role in Civil War, which opens May 2016, before getting his own standalone movie on July 28th, 2017. Sony also announced who would direct that movie, going with Jon Watts, director of Cop Car, the upcoming thriller that made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

He’s certainly a brave choice but it seems increasingly popular to put superhero movies in the hands of up and comers who have indie cred but little mega-budget Hollywood experience.

Alyson Hannigan & Thomas Dekker Will Have Modern Love In A Gay Marriage Drama

June 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

alyson-hanniganThe gay-themed movie Modern Love has been quietly picking up a great cast, with Kate Walsh, Anthony Rapp and Jonathan Bennett all set to star, and now, with shooting underway, they’ve been joined by Alyson Hannigan, Thomas Dekker (“Nightmare on Elm Street”), Alona Tal, Sam Anderson, Lee Garlington, Mackenzie Astin and Hutchi Hancock, according to Variety.

It’s certainly a better line-up than the majority of gay-themed films get, but as this one is about the currently hot issue of gay marriage, it’s managed to attract a little bit more cash and known actors than most. It’s not known whether Hannigan will be stepping back into lesbian shoes following her famed turn as Willow in Buffy, but whatever character she’s playing, it will be great to see her.

The film ‘follows an intimate group of friends and family gathering at the home of two gay men — portrayed by Rapp and Bennett — to celebrate their nuptials. When the wedding hits a snag, the group helps the grooms to see that all marriages have their challenges.’

Those behind the movie hope it will have wide appeal, with the producers saying that writer/director Joshua Tunick’s script is about affirming the importance of the commitment of marriage for everyone – gay and straight – rather than just being about what it means from the LGBT perspective.

Filming is happening now in LA, although there’s no hint as to when we might see the movie.

Kristen Stewart’s Mom Confirms Her Daughter Is Currently Dating A Woman

June 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kristen-StewartSometimes you don’t need to officially come out, you just need a mother who’ll tell the world for you. There have been rumours previously about Kristen Stewart’s sexuality, but her publicly known dalliances have been with men, including a very high profile relationship with Robert Pattinson and a fling with (married) Snow White & The Huntsman director Rupert Sanders. Now though it seems she’s dating a woman, and it’s her mom who’s apparently confirmed it to the world.

Her mother, Jules Stewart, says (assuming we trust the Sunday Mirror’s quotes), “What’s not to be accepting about her now having a girlfriend? She’s happy. She’s my daughter, I’m just her mom so she knows I would accept her choices. I’ve met Kristen’s new girlfriend, I like her. What’s not to accept? She’s a lovely girl.”

She adds, “I feel like people need to be free to love whoever they want. I accept my daughter loves women and men. It’s OK to be who you are in my world. We all choose our friends so we should be free to choose our lovers. People are good to do whatever they like as long as they’re not hurting people or breaking the law. I have gay friends, family members, I’m accepting of people, we are all free to choose who we want to love.”

Kristen is apparently dating her personal assistant, Alicia Cargile. Speculation about them grew in April, after they were snapped looking very couply at Coachella.

The actress herself hasn’t commented, which isn’t surprising after the huge media pressure her relationship with Pattinson came under.

Ellen Pages Talks About The ‘Joy’ Of Playing A Gay Character In Freeheld After Coming Out

June 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ellen-pageJames Franco in I Am Michael has been taking the early running for being the highest profile gay-themed movie of the year, but there’s another film we should be hearing a lot more about in the coming month, Freeheld. The film stars Julianne Moore, Ellen Page, Michael Shannon, Luke Grimes and Steve Carell, and now Page has been talking to EW about how happy she was to be playing a gay character so soon after she came out publicly in February 2014.

She says, “It got to the point where it didn’t matter what I was doing in my life, there was always this cloud. And to be shooting the movie so soon after coming out was some of the most joy I’ve ever felt on a film set, which is a tricky thing to say because we’re telling a story that’s incredibly tragic.

“But the feeling of being out and playing someone who’s gay, and someone whose courage has allowed me to live my life, that feels amazing. People like Laurel and Stacie are the reason I feel so happy in my life now.”

In the true life tale, Page plays mechanic Stacie Andree, who was denied the pension benefits of her longtime partner and New Jersey police detective Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore), when the latter became terminally ill. While Hester’s detective partner, Dane Wells (Michael Shannon), was conservative and initially surprised to learn of Hester’s sexual orientation, he stepped up to become the leader in the fight for Laurel’s rights to assign her benefits to Stacie. Carell meanwhile plays the lawyer who helped take the case to court.

Of the story and the 2007 Oscar winning short documentary it’s based on, Page says, “I remember just seeing the trailer for the documentary and I was instantly brought to tears. Tremendous love stories between women have been made, of course. Some of them are my favourite movies. But to have a love story that brings up the civil rights issue, in relation to women—that we haven’t seen enough in the forefront.”

Freeheld, which has a script by Philadelphia scribe Ron Nyswaner, is due out in the US in October, all ready for a potential Oscar run of its own.

The Martian Trailer – Let’s bring Matt Damon home!

June 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Martian-Teaser-poster1The Martian may be a sci-fi movie above, but the poster above looks just as much like a call to action for the women and gay men who go week at the needs at the sight of Matt Damon. I’m sure they’d be more than will to help rescue him from the Red Planet.

Here’s the synopsis: During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, Watney must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

‘Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.’

The movie is due out later this year. [Read more…]

New Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation Trailer – Tom Cruise goes to war with the Syndicate

June 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mission-impossible-rogue-nation-poster2-slideIt would seem the Mission: Impossible franchise has decided it wants to sit halfway between a Marvel superhero movie and a James Bond flick, but considering the amount of money those films make, that’s probably not a bad decision for Paramount to have made.

Synopsis: ‘With the IMF disbanded, and Ethan (Tom Cruise) out in the cold, the team now faces off against a network of highly skilled special agents, the Syndicate. These highly trained operatives are hellbent on creating a new world order through an escalating series of terrorist attacks. Ethan gathers his team and joins forces with disavowed British agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who may or may not be a member of this rogue nation, as the group faces their most impossible mission yet.’

Tom Cruise star alongside Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner and Ving Rhames, and adds to the cast Rebecca Ferguson and Alec Baldwin

Carol Picks Up Queer Palm At Cannes, With Rooney Mara Sharing Best Actress For The Lesbian Drama

May 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

carol-cate-blanchett-rooney-maraIn what isn’t particularly surprising news, Todd Hayne’s Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, has picked up the Queer Palm at Cannes, given out anually to the best LGBT-themed movie screening at the fest.

As the lesbian-themed drama was one of the frontrunners for the festival’s biggest prize, the Palm d’Or, it would have been more of a surprise if it hadn’t won the Queer Palm.

The Queer Palm’s jury noted though that while Carol made a very strong showing at Cannes, it was one of the few films at this year’s festival to include overtly gay representation. As a result they gave a special mention to The Lobster – starring Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz in a fable about people who risk getting turned into animals if they fail to find the perfect mate in 45 days – even though it doesn’t contain anything explicitly gay at all. However as it ”ridiculed absurd social norms and conventions related to sexual relations,’ the jury decided to give it a nod anyway.

Carol lost out on the Palm d’Or itself, which went to Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan,  movie about three people who pose as a family in order to escape the Civil War in Sri Lanka. However Todd Hayne’s did have something else to cheer, as Rooney Mara shared the Best Actress prize for Carol with Emmanuelle Bercot, who was honoured for Mon Roi.

Carol is about the relationship between two women in 1950s New York. One is a young department store clerk, Therese (Rooney Mara), who dreams of a better life, and the other is the older Carol (Cate Blanchett), who is trapped in a loveless marriage. However Carol’s husband (Kyle Chandler) begins to suspect what is happening. Playwright Phyllis Nagy wrote the screenplay adaptation.

Cate Blanchett’s Lesbian-Themed Drama Carol Tipped For Cannes Palm d’Or

May 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Carol-cate-blanchett-slideThere have been mixed fortunes for films at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, with Gus Van Sant’s Sea Of Trees, starring Matthew McConaughey, being met with boos, while Todd Haynes’ lesbian-themed Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, is getting huge buzz.

Variety is already saying the film may be one of the frontrunners at next year’s Oscar, remaking that early reaction to the movie ‘were some of the strongest of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival’.

Many are backing that sentiment, with Sasha Stone of Awards Daily commenting, “Weinstein is right in saying ‘Carol’ has the stuff. I think Hollywood will finally give Haynes the directing nod he so richly deserves. Rooney’s movie as much as Blanchett’s. Exceptional in every respect.”

Indiewire’s Anne Thompson meanwhile tweeted, “Blanchett & Mara carry Todd Haynes’ 50s lesbian romance Carol with glamorous allure. Strong contender for awards @cannes15 & beyond.”

The BBC meanwhile says the movie is ‘tipped for Cannes glory’.

While the film has been getting a brilliant response, Blanchett herself has stepped forward to clarify comments that many (incuding ourselves) took to suggest she was bisexual.

In a piece published in Variety last week, when asked about whether she had had relationships with women, Cate answered “Yes. Many times.” However it turns out this wasn’t all she said.

At a Cannes press conference she noted, “From memory, the conversation ran, ‘Have you had relationships with women?’ And I said, ‘Yes, many times. If you mean I’ve had sexual relationships with them, the answer is ‘No’ – but that obviously didn’t make it to print.

“Call me old-fashioned but I thought one’s job as an actor was not to present one’s boring, small, microscopic universe but to make a psychological connection to another character’s experiences. My own life is of no interest to anyone else. Or maybe it is. But I certainly have no interest in putting my own thoughts and opinions out there.”

Carol is about the relationship between two women in 1950s New York. It’s due for release in the US in December, which should set it up nicely for a strong Oscar run.

Cate Blanchett Coyly Suggests That She’s Bisexual

May 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Cate-BlanchettCate Blanchett isn’t one to go into great detail about herself. In a new Variety profile about her role in the upcoming film Carol, she doesn’t even want to talk about how she prepares for a part, merely saying, “Do I have a process? I don’t know. There are certainly things perhaps that I don’t want to identify.”

However when talking about the fact Carol is her first lesbian role, she does suggest that perhaps she’s not completely new to relationships with women, as when asked about this being her first time, she answers, “On film – or in real life?”

When pressed on whether this means she has had relationships with women in the past (she is currently married to a man), she doesn’t have a huge amount more to add, but does say, “Yes. Many times.”

It seems she doesn’t have a time for labels, as she says that when considering what her character in the film would be considered, she says “I never thought about it. I don’t think Carol thought about it.”

The long-gestating Carol is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novella The Price of Salt, which follows the relationship between two women in 1950s New York. One is a young department store clerk (Mia Wasikowska) who dreams of a better life, and the other is a woman (Blanchett) trapped in a loveless marriage. Playwright Phyllis Nagy wrote the screenplay adaptation.

Todd Haynes, known for previous LGBT-themed work such as Velvet Goldmine and Far From Heaven, directs. He previously worked with Blanchett on his unusual 2007 Bob Dylan biopic, I’m Not There.

It’s well worth reading the full Variety piece, which talks about how Carol got to the screen, this history of Highsmith’s book (which was controversial enough on its initial release that she wrote it under a pseudonym), as well as the issue of both female and gay centred stories in mainstream cinema.
