The Big Short (Blu-ray Review)

May 22, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Steve Carell, Finn Wittrock
Director: Adam Mckay
Running Time: 130 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 23rd 2016 (UK)

There’s an odd contradiction at the heart of The Big Short, as it’s a movie where the ‘heroes’ are people who managed to make out like bandits due to the world economy collapsing. Thankfully though the film knows that and is at pain to point out that while the main characters may have realised what was going on before anyone else, they’re also aware that while what they’re doing may be good for their investors, it’s also built on the back of the misery of a lot of normal people.

Based on real events, the ensemble film tells a trio of interwoven tales set during the run up to the economic meltdown of 2008. Christian Bale is Michael Burry, an eccentric hedge fund manager who realises that there’s something strange going on in the housing market, and that the financial instruments that it is now based on are a house of cards that have become increasingly corrupt and that it’s only a matter of time until the whole thing collapses. While these instruments are rising in value and billions are being made from them, Burry knows that many of the underlying loans they are based on are worthless. [Read more…]

Dirty Grandpa (Blu-ray Review)

May 22, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Zac Efron, Robert De Niro, Zoey Deutch, Aubrey Plaza, Jason Mantzoukas
Director: Dan Mazer
Running Time: 102 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 23rd 2016 (UK)

I suppose it’s a bit much to expect a film called Dirty Grandpa to be anything except dirty and about a grandpa. However, despite the fact he’s spent most of the past 20 years phoning it in, it’s difficult not to hold out hope that with Robert De Niro onboard it’s going to be more than just a series of slightly random gross-out jokes and comedy that’s more annoying than funny. Unfortunately, it isn’t.

Jason (Zac Efron) is an uptight lawyer, a week away from marrying an equally uptight woman. It’s also his grandmother’s funeral. He gets roped in to driving his grandfather, Dick (De Niro), to Florida for his annual vacation. However, once on the road, it becomes clear the 72-year-old isn’t intending for a couple of weeks of sun and shuffleboard while reminiscing about his late wife – he wants to get laid and party. Dave Franco Gets Engaged To His Boyfriend In A New Bad Neighbours 2 Clip

May 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bad-neighbours-2-dave-franco-engagementA few weeks ago it was confirmed that after some hints and homoeroticism in Bad Neighbours (known simply as Neighbors in the US), Dave Franco’s character, Pete, was going to be an out and proud gay man in the sequel. He’s also getting engaged, and if you haven’t seen it yet, a new clip shows a rather sweet set-up where the frat boys get together to make the proposal a special occasion.

In regard to the decision to allow Peter to come out and get engaged, director Nicholas Stoller has said, “Clearly, we’re playing with the homoerotic tension there [with the relationship between Pete and his frat brother Teddy (Zac Efron)], and I was like, ‘He should just be gay.’ Then in this one, it came up again. [Co-writer] Evan Goldberg brought it up, and he said, ‘I think he should be gay, and part of [his arc] should be the proposal.’ It was kind of all of us coming to the same conclusion.”

Take a look at the sweet clip below. Bad Neighbours 2 is in cinemas now. [Read more…]

The Most Hateful Small Town in America? Trailer – Homophobia & racism mix in a Christian Arkansas town

May 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

most-hateful-town-in-america-slideAmerica is a big and diverse country, which in most respects is a great thing, but it almost makes it easier for it to retain enclaves of people with attitudes so far from the mainstream that it’s difficult to believe that such a place could still exist. It also makes you wonder how many people hold these attitudes but keep quiet about it.

The documentary The Most Hateful Small Town in America? follows a gay man as he travels to Harrison, Arkansas, a town with a bad reputation for bigotry cloaked in a gown of pious Christianity. He discovers that while there are people there trying to change both the town and people’s thoughts about it, you don’t even have to scratch the surface to find racism, homophobia, anti-semitism, islamophobia and just about ever other flavour of hate you can imagine. Indeed, the national director of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan has his office nearby.

Indeed, as the trailer shows, you don’t even have to speak to the people, as there are plenty of billboards around the place that are essentially white supremacism in 21st Century clothes. IN just two-minutes, that trailer presents a very disturbing picture, not just that such attitudes still exist, but they can be seen as so normal and natural. Take a look below. [Read more…]

Suited Trailer – A tailor for clothing for trans and gender-nonconforming people gets a documentary

May 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

suited-slideBack in September 2014 we posted about the fact Lena Dunham was producing a documentary about a New York tailor that specialises in making clothes for trans and genderqueer people. At the time is was called Three Suits, but now it’s changed its name to Suited, and the trailer for the doc, which will air on HBO, has arrived.

The documentary focuses on Bindle & Keep, following several of the company’s transgender clients as they have custom suits made, with tailors and the customer coming together to create bespoke clothing perfect to fit each person’s gender identity and expression. While the staff is largely straight, Bindle & Keep was specifically founded to help those under-served by the fashion industry, which has led them to such things as making clothes for gay weddings and for members of the Orange Is the New Black cast.

The doc, which premiered at Sundance, will air on HBO in the US on June 20th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

First Look At Charlize Theron As A Fast & Furious 8 Baddie

May 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fast-and-furious-8-charlize-theronA few months ago it was revealed that Charlize Theron was turning villain once more, this time as the bad guy in the latest Fast & Furious movie. Now she’s on the set and the first picture of her in the movie has been released, via Twitter. It has to be said though, it sure looks like she’s been visited by the airbrush fairies.

Not a vast amount if known about her character, beyond the fact she’s called Cipher and likes ‘classic rock’ and ‘giant freaking guns’. It’s also known she’s out to destroy Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), and the rest of the Fast & Furious crew. The last couple of movies have focused on the emnity between the good guys and the Shaw brothers (Luke Evans and Jason Statham), but it’s not known if Cipher is linked to them.

Dwayne Johnson, Kurt Russell, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Scott Eastwood and Kristofer Hivju star. [Read more…]

New Star Trek Beyond Trailer – Chris Pine & co. head for strange new worlds & into action

May 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Star-Trek-Beyond-Teaser-posterThe first trailer for Star Trek Beyond came in for quite a bit of criticism, not least for being very action-heavy and not Star Trek-y enough for some tastes. However, with the second trailer it seems Paramount feels the best approach is to double down on the action and suggestions of lots of epic special-effects. That said, they have added a few more character moments and suggestions this fits into a larger sci-fi universe.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Star Trek Beyond,” the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin (“The Fast and the Furious” franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. In “Beyond,” the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.’

The movie will be in cinemas July 22nd. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]
