Family Guy – Season 14 (DVD Review)

November 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Seth MacFarlane, Alex Borstein, Seth Green, Mila Kunis, Mike Henry
Director: Various
Running Time: 440 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 10th 2014 (UK)

Having just ended on BBC3 in the UK, Family Guy – Season 14 arrives on DVD in the UK. It’s perhaps the most controversial season in the show’s history – which isn’t bad going for a series that’s previously had two episodes that were fully animated and then rejected by the Fox network due to worries about their content.

However the controversy this time wasn’t due to Family Guy taking on abortion or concern about jokes about Jews – it’s because they killed off one of the main characters. Yep, a few episodes in to Season 14 Brian the faux-intellectual dog bites the big one (or at least bites the tarmac, seeing as he gets run over). However it shouldn’t come as too much of a shock to discover that this might not be the last time we see him. [Read more…]

Will Jared Leto Be The Joker In Suicide Squad?

November 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jared-LetoBefore Dallas Buyers Club, there was a four-year gap between movies for Jared Leto while he concentrated on fronting his band. However after he won an Oscar, many expected him to return to the world of movies with a vengeance.

Despite a few possibilities he’s yet to pick his next role, but that may change soon if Warner and DC get their way, as TheWrap reports that they want him to play The Joker in Suicide Squad. Ryan Gosling was previously circling the role, but he apparently didn’t want to to sign a deal that would cover multiple movies (which could also be an issue with Leto).

You’ve also got to imagine any actor would also have qualms about taking the role, as they’re bound to be compared to Heath Ledger’s iconic performance in The Dark Knight.

As previously reported, Will Smith, Cara Delevigne, Tom Hardy, and Margot Robbie are all said to be in various stages of discussions to star Suicide Squad, with Jesse Eisenberg expected to reprise his Batman v Superman role as Lex Luthor. However as yet no casting has been confirmed.

It’s said Suicide Squad will focus on seven DC Comics villains, who have been captured but are offered the chance for redemption with a mission none of them are expected to survive.

David Ayer will direct with an August 2016 release planned.

warcraft-character-pic1Warcraft finished shooting a while ago, but with so many special effects to finish off, it won’t be in cinemas for nearly a year and a half. Selma Trailer – David Oyelowo takes on a key moment in MLK’s civil rights struggle

November 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

selma-pic2You wouldn’t think making a movie about one of the most important moments in the Civil Rights struggle in the US would be that difficult to get off the ground, but Selma faced a massive struggle. Even with Lee Daniels directing and a high profile cast attached (including Hugh Jackman and others), it couldn’t get funding).

However now it’s finally happened, with Ava DuVernay directing and David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Alessandro Nivola, Giovanni Ribisi Common, Carmen Ejogo, Lorraine Toussaint, Tim Roth, and Oprah Winfrey starring.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘SELMA is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s SELMA tells the story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.’

Selma opens in a few US cinemas on December 25th, 2014, and will go wide in early January. A February 6th UK release is planned. [Read more…]

Mark Wahlberg Will Be The Six Billion Dollar Man With Peter Berg Directing

November 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mark-wahlbergA few months ago rumours emerged that Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg were thinking about making a movie version of The Six Million Dollar Man. It turns out that was correct, but six million doesn’t buy you what it did in the 1970s, so Deadline reports that it will now become The Six Billion Dollar Man. That’s inflation for you.

The movie is about Steve Austin (Wahlberg), a former astronaut who nearly dies after crashing an experimental plane. He is saved when scientists give him bionic replacements for both legs, his right arm and left eye. He becomes a powerful weapon for the government as a secret agent for the Office of Scientific Intelligence.

The TV series, which starred Lee Majors and ran for five seasons between 1974 and 1978, was based on the 1972 novel Cyborg by Martin Caidin.

It appears getting the movie off the ground hasn’t been plain sailing though. While Universal own the rights to The Six Million Dollar Man TV series and were said to be backing the film when it was first rumoured, in order to move things forwards The Weinstein Company’s Dimension Films label has now stepped in to back the movie, although Universal may still part-finance.

Peter Berg, who previously worked with Wahlberg on Lone Survivor, will direct. They hope to shoot the film sometime next year for a 2016 release.

Toy Story 4 Is Officially Coming With John Lasseter Directing

November 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-lasseter-pixarRemember when Pixar was the company that hated sequels? That’s changed massively over the years, not least with the gargantuan success of the Toy Story series. While it appeared Toy Story 3 would be the end of the line – it certainly felt like a perfect conclusion – Disney & Pixar have now announced a fourth instalment.

John Lasseter, director of the first two Toy Story movies will helms the film, which promises to ‘open a new chapter in the lives of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the Toy Story’ gang. The story was dreamt up by Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich, the storytellers who have been the driving force behind all three Toy Story films. That will now be turned into a script by the writing team of Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (Celeste and Jesse Forever).

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us,” said Lasseter. “We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another ‘Toy Story’ movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”

The film already has a US release date of June 16th, 2017, and it should be out in the UK around the same time.

Fagbug Nation Trailer – Fighting for gay equality on a unique car-based mission

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fagbug-nation-slideIn 2007, Erin Davies’ VW Beetle was vandalized with a hateful slur while she was at a pride event.  Rather than be ashamed of what happened, the art teacher turned activist drove around with the word on her car for a year before getting it completely remodeled as the Fagbug, rainbow coloured and covered in pride. She then hit the road with her loud, out and proud message to raise awareness of LGBT rights and speak up where so many have been silenced.

Fagbug Nation takes you behind the wheel of what it’s like to drive the now famous Fagbug. With six years of touring under her belt, director and activist Erin Davies (Fagbug) has her mind set on getting her car to all 50 states, Hawaii and Alaska being the final two. To pull this off, Erin went 54 days without a car, put her car on 5 boats, and flew on 14 planes. The Fagbug gets lei’d in Hawaii and drives through the midnight sun to Alaska, but first makes a pit stop at the Equality House in Topeka, Kansas.

While on the road and at speaking events, Erin meets a diverse cast of characters and recounts what she’s experienced over the past half-decade: praise from those who have been helped to find their own voice, condemnation from bigots and those within the LGBT community who don’t agree with her methods, confusion and applause from all walks of life.

The film is out in the US on DVD & VoD on December 2nd. [Read more…]

Gale Harold & Van Hansis’ Gay Themed Murder Mystery Gets The Go Ahead

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gale-harold-van-hansisThis time last month we reported that a brand new gay-themed murder mystery, Kiss Me, Kill Me, was seeking funding on Kickstarter. Well now it’s announced that it got the cash it needs and the film has the greenlight. It’s now set to go into production in December.

While the movie initially sought $100,000 on Kickstarter with the hope that in an ideal world they’d end up with $125,000. But when the campaign ended it had raised an awesome $131,231.

Kiss Me, Kill Me is a contemporary Alfred Hitchcock/Agatha Christie-style ‘who-done-it’, with the mystery centered on Dusty, who confronts his unfaithful boyfriend and blacks-out, only to wake up to find his boyfriend murdered and he’s the prime suspect.

The picture stars Gale Harold, playing a gay character for the first time since his iconic performance as Brian Kinney on Showtime’s Queer as Folk, and three-time Emmy nominee Van Hansis, from As the World Turns, and the acclaimed Eastsiders.

The month-long crowd-funding effort caused a groundswell among supporters, whose fan-made artwork, videos and music aided the campaign on social media. Director Caspers Andreas says he is beyond thrilled with the outpouring of support for the film: “The huge success of this campaign is a reminder how important movies with LGBT content are to audiences.” He continues, “Hollywood is not producing these sort of films, and we would not be able to do it without the fans.”

Joining Harold and Hansis is an impressive cast, including Willam Belli (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Kit Williamson (Eastsiders, Mad Men), Independent Spirit nominee Yolonda Ross (Go For Sisters), Tom Lenk (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Brianna Brown (Devious Maids), Jonathan Lisecki (Gayby), Michael Maize (True Blood), Craig Robert Young (NCIS: Los Angeles), Jackie Monahan (Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same), as well as Matthew Ludwinski and Allison Lane, who both previously starred in Andreas’ Going Down in LA-LA Land.

Ben Whishaw Talks About Trying To Come Out With Dignity

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lilting-ben-whishawComing out is rarely an easy thing to do, and that’s as true for celebrities as it is for everyone else. In days gone past famous gay people were either outed or they did big, splashy interviews were they had to divulge every detail of their life (which they often did under the threat of being outed if they didn’t).

However in recent years it’s become a lot simpler, with an increasing amount of celebs releasing short, simple statements, authorising brief mentions of same sex partners in newspaper articles or thanking their partner when they receive an award.

Ben Whishaw went the simple statement route, with his reps releasing the following in August 2013: ‘Due to speculation, I can confirm that Ben and Mark [Bradshaw] entered into a civil partnership in August 2012. They were proud to do so and are very happy. Ben has never hidden his sexuality, but like many actors he prefers not to discuss his family or life outside of his work.’

Now he’s been talking about coming out and the difficulty finding a dignified way to do it. Talking to Marie Clare (via Radio Times), he says, “I suppose now I’m very grateful that it happened the way it did. It was never a secret, everyone around me in my life knew, it’s just very hard to know how to say it, in a way, with some sort of dignity and to remain private. It was something that happened at that time and now I’m very happy it’s just a fact and I can get on with life.”
